If you want to help birdlife but you're broke or a novice, this is for you!
In this nesting box video i show you how to build a long lasting nesting box with free materials from different styles of pallets and using the most basic hand tools. These boxes are not to win a beauty competition, they are to be easy to build and fit for purpose.
I also show you the BEST way to successfully hang a nesting box with the 'HABISURE' system thanks to Alan and the great team at Hollow Log Homes, give them some love at www.hollowloghomes.com/
Watch the pro show you how to create the Habisure system here:

Australian birdlife needs all the help it can get after the summer bushfire crisis. The 'rona' has slowed down helping efforts but you can still make a difference. Hollow nesting animals need homes so if you want to help them, like I do, then follow along and i'll show you every detail of what you need to build a long lasting home for your local birdlife.
For FREE detailed plans for this Lorikeet/Parrot nesting box and more great info head to: nestboxtales.com/
Go here to find local wildlife carers that are coordinating these nesting boxes, and going into bushfire affected areas to install these properly to ensure successful residency: rescuedpets.com.au/
I said that I am happy to help you if you want guidance to do this yourself, leave me a comment or message me on my other social media platforms listed below.
Season 4 - Filmed January 2020 - the 'rona' means it took until June 1 for it to go live!

    Thanks for the video. I looked into all this a year to two ago but I got almost overwhelmed by all the detail on how to make it for a specific species and how to keep out myna birds, etc. Then I realised the difficulty I'd have to mount it high enough. By that stage it was already late spring and too late in the season. So I dropped the idea. Your video is encouraging me to re-examine this and think about where I might mount it.

    Dave, that is fantastic. If I have inspired one more person to make these boxes then it is all worth it. I agree, it can be overwhelming when looking at the details, but if you havent checked out the design booklet that ive linked to, it is incredible. The most important thing is to know what you want to attract, nearly all boxes are the same design it just comes down to size of box and entrance hole. Also, I am the same, I dont have the equipment to hang these properly so i found a local group that is doing that part (check the links in description) so I know im helping the way that i can, ill make them and they can hang them! Thanks for watching mate!

    Thank you Chris. It actually surprised me when I worked out how I could do it with only a few basic, cheap tools! I would never tell the wife though, you always need a shed full of tools hahah!! Thanks for watching.

    Great stuff Mate! What a fantastic idea for a series and kudos for using a Craftright handsaw for all those cuts. Can't complain about the cost there! Looking forward to the Miner Prood box, that should be interesting.... little buggers.

    Thanks mate, yep the cheapest saw I could find at Bunnings. The first few cuts I was thinking, why am I making this hard for myself, and then they were all cut! I was really surprised about the way to stop Indian Mynas getting in and really happy with the outcome so I look forward to posting that video. Thanks again for your support mate.

    Good stuff 👍 and I like your work bench. I’m not sure about wrapping wire around the tree though. We use a backing board on the box which is screwed to the tree with rubber grommets (small sections of old rubber hose) between the backing board and the tree to allow for tree growth.

    Hi Chris, thanks for the comment (and the feedback on my bench!) The wire with the rubber hose will allow for plenty of tree growth without damaging the tree. Good luck with your nesting boxes, i'd love to see some if you can shoot me a message on FB or IG? Cheers ✌🏼

    @@OzSawdustMakers absolutely, I want to make an owls nesting box, so I will do some research. Hey I like to make my own barnboard stain out of white vinegar and steel wool, do you think birds or owls would mind??

  • @OzSawdustMakers

    @OzSawdustMakers

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@mackenziemill That's great Sandy but since beginning my research into nesting boxes, you want the most natural finishes for protection. No treated materials, no paint or oil inside the box, and nothing toxic on the exterior of the box because many species like to chew on the edges. For the best results, try and find information that is relevant to the local birdlife in your area. :)

    Nice work. Are the pallets you use made from treated timber, and if so, isn’t that a concern for the young birds who may chew the timber?

  • @OzSawdustMakers

    @OzSawdustMakers

    Hi Paul, thank you for asking an important question. I am using HT (Heat Treated) pallets which are safe for everyone, there are many videos on KZread that help explain the codes on every pallet so you can tell if yours is heat treated or chemically treated. I thought I covered this here but I may have covered it in a different video and neglected to mention it here so thank you again. Cheers!

    Awesome. Thank you .Would it be possible to make one out of a pine drawer ( I have a few) with a back drilled on ? And following the rest of your instructions?

  • @OzSawdustMakers

    @OzSawdustMakers

    4 жыл бұрын

    That is a great idea Sez, I love upcycling! You would have to double check that the drawer base is pine, often they are something soft like MDF. If you click on the instruction booklet in the description you should be able to find nesting boxes that are similar size to your drawers and then go for it!

    Yeah that's a fair comment. I'm assuming that not everyone is going to use the best paint on the outside, which is why it's best to just leave the inside plain. Thanks for watching and commenting ✌🏼

    The entrance holes are way too small for lorikeets

  • @OzSawdustMakers

    @OzSawdustMakers

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and commenting Pete but the holes are the perfect size. Different Lorikeet species require an entrance hole from 30mm to 60mm wide. Rainbow Lorikeets need a 60mm entrance hole which is the size in this video. If they are too big then they end up becoming homes for much larger birds or allow predators to enter the box. All the information (provided by the experts) is in the description, or check out this website for more. www.nestboxtales.com

    @chriscobern8718

    Parrots will chew the entrance hole bigger if they need to. The tighter the fit the better to stop predators like goannas etc coming in after them.
