DIY NAS & Hard Drive Cabinet - IKEA Hacking - Drive Cooling and Sound Dampening

Ойын-сауық

I design and build a hard drive cooling and sound dampening cabinet out of IKEA furniture, USB powered cooling fans and 3D printed parts -- putting into practice some of the things I learned from KZread makers. In this video I got to use a hole punch and a metal cutting tool called a nibbler. Does it come out perfectly? No, but I learned a lot and I think it looks pretty darn good.

Great tutorial Fede. I’m building a little server with a raspberry pi, and your cabinet gave me some ideas.

You want fore fans pulling in air than pushing out. This causes positive pressure which keeps the dust down.

Definitely inspiring! I have a custom MDF studio desk with all the hard drives, cords and hubs inside its 14cm high enclosed department - all covered with an IKEA table board. Really useful stuff 😁 How well have the dampeners worked for you reducing the HDD vibrations in your cabinet? - Eero

The dampeners were more for reducing sound, rather than physical vibrations -- though they are related. I still hear the drives, but it's soft in the background.

thanks for the details! can you (or any1) tell me if the equipment you used is easily available at a metal workshop? I don't have the equipment would be a bit too expensive for me. Or can the guy coming to attach the ikea box to the wall do this? I don't think his drill would be as good as ur Lathe

I don't know for a fact, but I think that a metal workshop would have a nibbler tool or a way of cutting holes in sheet metal.
