MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

I’m doing the same thing man, just recently lost my mom about a year ago, and now I’m back in the house my brothers and I grew up in. After my moms passing my grandpa was helping me with the renovation and sadly we lost him also about 8 days ago on my moms heavenly birthday on September 22. And it’s been tough going through grief and depression, but my grandpa always told me to just keep my mind and body busy with some old school hard work and elbow grease. And I just want to say thank you for showing us DIYers and helping me continue this journey for not only me and my brothers but for my angels watching over us! 🙏🏽

Dang brother! I’m really sorry to hear all that happening! Losing a sibling is hard, remember when I lost mine and all I did was build stuff to stay distracted as much as I could. My prayers are up and seriously, good luck with the house. Make it awesome in honor of your mom!! Send me a photo or two sometime on Instagram!

I'm not religious or anything, but when I saw this post it hit home ............a lot! In January I lost my grandfather. He was 94, a WWII vet, a father of four, and one of the funniest people I've ever known. I worked for his electric company for 4 years and he taught me just about everything I know about industrial control systems. His death was expected but still hard. 2 months later, my mother died of Parkinson's disease. We were not very close because of who I remind her of but it still hurts. So now, here I am, doing word work and running our micro farm. I can just hear ET, thats what everyone in the family called him, telling me that it doesn't matter what you do as long as you stay busy and do things that are visibly productive. That way you will never think that the things you do are a waste of valuable time. He was a wise dude. I will miss them a lot.

This turned out fantastic! I am almost finished with my kitchen remodel. It’s been a journey and I have done all the work myself except the counter and sink install. We did quartz counters so I was definitely not installing that! So many mistakes were made too. The project was the biggest DIY project Id ever taken on. I opted for an induction range for my stuff as well. I had pans that were rated for induction and its much fast to heat up stuff. I love that thing and it was a little bit of a spluge. 😊

You may want to readdress that header. It looks like you just tacked it in above the joists, which is odd, without connecting it to any load bearing member. Otherwise, loved the renovation. A lot of good inspiration and tips.

Looks great Mike! I'd be very interested in a 1 and 2 year check in on how the concrete skim coat on the countertops hold up because I am very skeptical of it's long term durability, so it would be cool to see a follow up. Most importantly though, removing the load bearing wall was done incorrectly and is possibly unsafe. Please hire a structural engineer to evaluate the conditions, and detail proper connections when removing structural elements in a house/building. I am a structural engineer so this doesn't sit right with me. I don't want to be a downer though, I am a huge fan and love your channel. I just don't want other people to do this themselves.

He's been told multiple times and doesn't seem to care. If people want to be stupid enough to pull a load bearing wall down without first making sure it's safe to do so that's on them. Using the "Well he did it" isn't an excuse.

Ok. Great video. But i have an updated idea for your pan cubny and your cutting board. Pan cubby, you should think about switching the door from opening down to up. Easier to slid pans in and out without damaging the door itself. Cutting board, should install your trash can pull out under the cutting board for easy disposal and be able to hid your garbage at the same time. Good luck!

Induction Stoves use magnets to excite the metal in the cookware thereby heating it, which has to have some kind of magnetic metal in them. This tech allows changing the heat to be more like cooking with gas. The "burner" area doesn't even get hot other than from the radiant heat from the cookware, and they usually have sensors that will turn off the stove after it stops detecting the cookware for a while as a safety feature.

Tip from a contractor: cut the hole on your caulk tube smaller and at a 45 degree angle. No need for windex or for getting it all over your hands. Cutting steps out to get the same result. Imagine having to caulk a whole house. It’ll make you want to NOT use windex and getting it all over hands and cloths.

Thanks for the caulking tip! Also, in regards to protecting against stains on the white, check DIY's for "prepping" or "protecting" the sink with an oil. like once a month after you wash and dry the sink, you can use an oil, to help protect the finish. I just found out about this a little while ago because my Mom's new sink is white and gets nicks really easily. Take Care!

I think the cabinet doors need handles or knobs to contrast with the light color paint. but other than that, it looks great!

I personally like the minimalist look, but some matte brass hardware could look really cool!

Wow! Awesome renovation project!! Love your videos and smile as always! Mike, why did you renovate the floors after painting cabinets, and not first? I’m worried about joints))) simple and genius cutting board!! 🥰😍

Induction cooking uses electric currents to directly heat pots and pans through magnetic induction. Instead of using thermal conduction (a gas or electric element transferring heat from a burner to a pot or pan), induction heats the cooking vessel itself almost instantly.

With the iduction cookingboard you don`t need a watercooker. You should apply some transperent paint, which you can easy clean, behind the cooking area and under and the innersides from the cabinets.

That range hood replacement looks great. Is the brand listed and I'm missing it? Either way, do you know the sone and CFM ratings? I'd like to change mine too.

You should get a heat gun to help get those old floors and glue up faster.

An induction cooktop works by transferring heat into a coil or iron pot sitting on top of it. You will have to cook with mostly induction made cookware from now on, or cast iron. Bonus is, it doesn't work with anything that isn't made for it, so it's harder to accidentally catch the house on fire.

Really clever upgrades to transform your kitchen on a budget. Love the end result! One suggestion is I noticed you used a standard sized roller without an extension. You always want to use an extension for the leverage. It makes painting exponentially easier, faster and better. I recommend the Wooster brush Sherlock GT SR090 💪🏼

I think you should sand the floors or make them less slippery.
