DIY Miniramp: How to Build a Skater's Dream

Such a smooth ride surface and is the exact feel you get on one of the professional ramps at skate parks. Gatorskins will not only improve the ride and feel, but the life of the ramp is going to last so much longer.
In this video we learn how to build a DIY mini ramp in your backyard! This skateboarding ramp is easy to build with basic construction materials and tools. It's obviously big, but it's relatively easy to make. If you've ever wanted to make your own skateboard ramp, hopefully this sets you on the right path!
As kids we all new someone with a miniramp, or at least a lot of us did. Many years later, we're finally fulfilling a childhood dream of building a proper sized mini ramp in a friend's backyard. It isn't the same as your own backyard, but this was very rewarding and a blast to be a part of. Skateboarding has been a big part of my life since I was a kid, and I couldn't have been more excited to start building such a huge ramp with all my friends. Alot of of people are going to shred this ramp, and alot of kids are going to learn to skate on that ramp.

Just fulfilled my childhood dream today of buying a mini ramp but it definitely needs some repairs. My daughter loves it already though and so do I lol I’m definitely going to have to look into gator skins! Man this halfpipe came out amazing thought!

How is it holding up after 9 months now?I'm gonna be building on for my sons & I'm going to put a few coats of paint on EVERY single board & piece of plywood before it even gets cut. Gonna use two layers of 7/16 plywood for flat & trans. I'm also gonna put a feltpaper in between the layers of plywood. I'm in a lil town just south of Jax too.

It is holding up Amazingly!!!! Putting the primer coats down on the plywood is another big key that we later ended up going back and doing, due to the humidity/moisture that comes with being in Florida. No way, such a small world haha. Enjoy and if you have any questions just give me a shout!
Not heard of Gator skins before but they sound like an interesting product. Can you leave them out in the weather? What's the rain resistance like? Thanks.

That is why we chose gator skins because they are completely water resistant. We did make a mistake by not sealing or putting some sort of primer down on the base layer of plywood as moisture and water will seep in between the cracks/seems. So later we disassembled top layer of gatorskins and then layed down some primer coat on all exposed plywood and wood under the gator skins and has been golden ever since.

@ThurnisHaley Screwing them down obviously makes them removable, so see your points. Are they manufactured in the US? With a name like Gator there must be a Florida connection!?

Yes they are manufactured in the US, I think they are based out of Cali or Washington something out West. I did some research and very fortunate to have a local supplier that is also the oldest running skatepark in the US "Kona", the owner helped me out and had a bunch of it in stock. How did you countersink the screws in the gatorskin? Do those screws go through the plywood to the studs?

I got a 1/2" counter sinking bit from local hardware store and only drill it out for a second or two. Enough for the heads to sit in flush so don't actually drill out a full 1/2". Last we used I think 1"nails for the plywood if I can remember correctly and the first layer of plywood you want to get to the studs and the second layer you want to attach to the studs as well or at least I tried not everyone hits a stud but that was the goal. Last layer of gatorskins just attach to the plywood so you don't have to mark out studs. just have to watch out for screws in the plywood so you don't screw into one of the existing screws.

What blade do you use to cut the skin?

Just a normal framing circular saw, was like cutting really thin ply wood.
Are you all in Jax? Getting ready to build a similar ramp. Would love to see your ramp in person.

@@ThurnisHaley did you all frame it with 2x6s or 2x4s? Also noticed you used only 1sheet of plywood in the middle instead of building two separate 8' qtr pipes. Any reason for that? I think you commented that it threw the measurements off.

@@ThurnisHaley and what made you go with gatorskins? I have been looking at that and ramp armor. I found ramp armor in Tampa for $105 a sheet, but Kona is a whole lot closer

@@RobertS-oc6qo I believe we did 2x4s through out the entire build except for when we built the quarter pipe. The quarter pipe consisted of 3 2x6s for each quarter pipe. One as the back bottom, top bottom and one in the front top for the rail to rest on.

@@RobertS-oc6qo We were saving on a piece of the plywood since it was alot thicker and alot more expensive we used the middle piece of plywood as a connector so we basically built (4) separate quarter pipes but ended up being (2) 16' quarter pipes that can be disassembled into (4) 8' quarter pipes.
What is the transition radius?

We are lucky enough to be pretty close to a local dealer. Kona Skate park, if you go talk with the owner he is a dealer for gatorskins and usually has a good amount in stock so you don't have to pay for shipping or having to drive down to Tampa.

I believe the ramp is 3'8" tall, we were trying to get as close to 4' as we could. I will get an exact measurement next time I go skate it.
