DIY Mini Self-Watering Wicking Garden
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I wanted to show you a DIY Mini Self-Watering Wicking Garden that I made up the other day. I hope you all enjoy!
The way I look at gardening is plants need three things to live, they need nutrients or food, they need water, and they need sunlight or air. That's the only three things that they need, but they need certain levels and volumes of each one.
There's been a lot of growth lately in gardeners who are doing wicking pots or wicking beds and/or air pruning pots. This isn't going to be an air pruning pot, this is going to be a mini wicking bed video and I wanted to do something that was very simple for you that you can do at home in your spare time, you can even get your kids involved and then you can take a bed or a garden bed that's this large that is self watering or a wicking bed and you can put this outside if you want to, if you're an urban gardener or you live in an apartment, this would work great, you can put it out on your deck. You'll have something that's just going to be a whole lot more fun to try on a scaled-back version and you're going to eliminate one of the problems, and that is constant water supply.
Now the only other things two things that you have to worry about is am I giving it enough or the right amount of food or nutrients and is it getting enough sunlight? You've already solved your water issue and it'll solve you from having to babysit it all the time and your plant pots aren't going to dry out and you'll have a lot better production out of your small salad greens. I'm thinking salad greens, maybe some radishes, some chives or green onions would do really good in a small container like this.
Okay. So the reason why, again, that I didn't name a specific build list is because I want you to feel flexible to go out and get a variation of different sizes of things that will work together based on how large of a pot or a garden bed that you're trying to build. This is going to be really great for the window sill or sitting outside on your porch.
It's very simple, very easy to use and this thing should last for years and all I have to do is replace the fabric on the bottom maybe every few times that I plant it.
I hope this is helpful. If it has been helpful, please give us a thumbs up! It does help ratings and when you give us a thumbs up or give a video a thumbs up, it helps other people to find my videos and the more people that find my videos, the more videos that I can make to help you all learn how to garden just a little bit more effectively and save money at the same time.

I am 65, living below poverty level, living with breast cancer and enjoying life more by the grace of GOD than ever before. Thank you for your information which will allow me to eat organically, save money, and enjoying a new hobby. You are a natural born teacher. I just subscribed and will follow you on Google plus and your website. Thank you for sharing. Bless you ! Dianne Watson. Jax,FL.
Very, very well explained. Many people understandably feel that they need specific items and exact specifications to be successful. The fact that you focus on the core concepts and encourage innovation to achieve them is a superb teaching technique.
How can people dislike this? Someone taking the time to help others, for free. Thanks for your excellent video Wayne.

probably because it's long and boring. takes too much time to watch. With all the rising quality of youTube videos available this one has become sub-par. perhaps it was of better relative quality in 2014 when posted, he does get a lot right (eg audio quality)

Perhaps people didn't like the design as there are other designs much easier ,less expensive and better. Its better to just ignore the dislikes and take from it what suits you

One reason is the fact he paid $1.50 to fuck up a perfectly good container. Last i looked there is a wealth of free clear plastic just lying around

Because people who try this will be leaving standing water all over their gardens.
I have been watching through many self watering container videos, and I like this one the most. Simple and to the point. You make the concept easy to digest.
One of the better videos on this topic. Nice job.
I was literally getting dressed to go buy pots and tubing to build a pretty complicated wicking system I saw when I noticed YOUR video. The simplicity of your way just saved me a lot of money and unnecessary trouble. Thanks, Wayne, I'm now a subscriber.
Thank you so much for this video! This summer I've been making 5 gallon self watering buckets for larger vegetables. I've also made 4 of these containers. I use 1 each for basils, strawberry and lettuce. The last one I use in my "green house to establish roots on cuttings! Love love love this ideal.
Been looking at tons of ideas for hours and this is by far the simplest explanation and example yet!! Thanx!

This is a great affordable solution . I have been brain storming for a week for a creative system I could afford with no tools to build .I Thank you !
1,2,4, and 5 are food safe plastics. So look on the bottoms of different plastics to find a match. #safegardening

love this Idea. this way I can still plant and not have to do a big garden. I think instead of using landscape material I am going to start asking my mom an d all her business lady friends for their old stocking. I can using them for wicking and other things around the house. And instead of cutting out a hole in the container to put a clear piece in can you use clear containers instead or would they be to hot?

Deana Lynn Allen Rogers they are my fertilizers for my farm i`l will keep a couple of the does and sell the rest for now, i will probably harvest some later won`t breed them in the heat of the summer so these 2 litters is all i got till fall than i will start breeding again
good job showing you dont need expensive stuff to grow plants love it!!! 🙂 dollar store is your friend folks lol
I watched this video last season. I'm surely going to build some for this season. TY
Just here to say I love hearing him say Sill-i-kin! Awesome!
Nice. Simple and effective.
Fantastic and straight to the points, cheers, allow me to go away for a few days, with out asking for help Ta !
So that is $6 at dollar store. I get clothes hamper. There is a 2 inch lip at bottom. I put A piece of landscape cloth around and fill with dirt and plant. That 2 inch hold of water helps. Or I use Wal-Mart or cloth in a hamper without bottom lip and place on oil pan. I put drain holes up 2 inches . Both work for my Vegas. And the handles can help move them ad needed. I will try yours this year. Looks like mosquitos would stay out. At 75 I need easy things. I have 3 straw bales breaking down to try watermelons and cukes.
Wynne you have a flexible mind to learn and that makes you a great teacher.
One of the simplest self watering garden systems I've seen. No need to buy some fancy over priced system. ***** shows you how to do it yourself, very inexpensively too.

wondering if you could have used the pitcher as the water well? Didn't know if you laid it down flat and added water if lid would have stayed shut.

Yeah, if you want to use anything that can "contain" the water...go for it. I need the pitcher for other things but if you have extras sitting about, why not dice341? :) Good idea.

Wow! Very bright idea! The window!! And you are creative! And I am not obliged to have a big big bucket, for!! Thanks.
