While I *totally* respect + appreciate the ingenuity to this solution (it's better than anything I could come up with), I'd be very cautious about PVC fumes. If you repeat this please do so in a well ventilated environment and ideally with some kind of ventillation mask on. Most PVC contains toxins (apparently called DEHP) that are carcinogenic. Tread carefully! But awesome solution nonetheles.

Hello, Have you tried using a carriage bolt? They are ones with a square formed under a rounded head. Maybe heating the bolt and then it would be flush and also locked in place easier. Just thinking about it. Either way, this is something I need to build for some armatures! Thanks for all of the information! Ken K

Thanks for this video, gave me some ideas for making a dance dummy. If I want to place him standing and then lead him like he's walking/turning, how do you recommend I should mount him on?

We would suggest mounting him through the pvc piece on the "spine" (We have 2 back section pieces we would recommend using the one closer to the head) with a rod or some sort and possibly putting wheels on his "feet" in order to create the movement fluidly. We never tried mounting him on a stand of any kind so i'm not positive this is the best way to go about it. But these are our thoughts on your question.

Yes those are golf balls. But take care in not using old style golf balls (the ones with rubber bands inside them) that will create an issue when you are trying to heat the plastics up and could cause the balls to rupture after you put them inside the sockets.

Hello, what size are the couplers? Am I correct to assume that they are 1" as well? Also, about how wide is the "U" shaped channel that is cut into the PVC? I would take any recommendations that you have for a rotary cutting bit as well. Thanks, working on a dummy for my boys - Halloween related stuff! Rex

Hey Rex, couplers are indeed 1" as well. whatever size pvc you purchased for the "bones" of the dummy you'll buy the same size couplers for the joint sockets. As far s the U shaped channel, It solely depends on the size of your golf balls or whatever ball you're inserting into the socket hole. For us we ended up making about a half inch gap. Keep in mind the purpose of the channel is to enable full mobility of the joint socket. If you do not need full mobility then you'd be doing a little extra work. We figured out that having the socket without a U channel gives about 45-60 degrees of motion. Having a double ball socket without the U channel gives about 90-120 degrees. Then adding the U channel gives it the remaining 360 degrees of motion having both U channel sockets.

do you think i can use a blow torch if i don't have a heat gun?

I want to give this a shot, but what kind of golf balls are these? I realize some have rubber bands, some have titanium cores, etc... but I havent the first idea how to tell and half of the balls just dont say. can you give a brand and type you used?

We honestly didn't even pay attention to the golf balls that we purchased, we just bought the cheapest ones we could find at our sports store here. Ours definitely didn't have the rubber bands though and nor were they liquid core, because when we drilled them nothing came out. I would suggest to you before you go out and buy all your pieces, buy 1 golf ball and 1 pvc coupling and see if you can make the joint happen. We've had some people go through the trouble of purchasing everything and then figuring out they can't make the golf balls go inside the joints. From what i just looked up online, Fitleist is a brand of golf balls that looks like the same kind of balls we used.

Just wondering if you have a parts list available ? - eg. Number of specific items used, sizes, widths, lengths of items used etc....

We do sell the joints pre-made, we are currently having issues getting them out so it would be several weeks before we could put them together. You get everything double/single ball joint with coupler connection, all you would need is to have PVC that fits for 1" couplers. Ass far as the grappling dummy, we couldn't figure out a way to make it sturdy enough to withstand that much without it becoming very high priced.

Yes, without grinding the bolt head it will cause extreme amounts of friction and possibly reduce mobility completely.

I'm having difficulty because the joint is too tight (in the socket) and won't move. Do you have a sense of why this is?

From our experience the only time the join got stuck was after we allowed it to cool in the joint socket, best thing we did was reheat the socket and move the ball around a bit, this will loosen it up. Be careful doing that though you can loosen it up too much and have to start over. In all honesty you have done a perfect job if the socket is holding its form well. The more you use it (without heating it up) the looser it will become over time anyway.

What are you using for a ball???

+Antonino Vergel de Dios The size is 3/8 inch and the length is 3 and 1/2 inch. For us, we needed the length to be at least 3 and 1/4 inch, but we couldn't find a bolt in that specific length, so we made do with 3 and 1/2" and cut the excess off at the end of the joints construction. Also, after finishing our project we found that countersinking your bolts should be as minimal as possible and cranking the bolt to the nut as tightly as possible made the joints much more rigid.

Do you still already sell the articulating joint setup so all I have to do is glue them on my pvc?

I've been approached about the idea, unfortunately as far as a cheap method of doing it, we havn't been able to come up with it. Just because of the amount of material it would take to cover the entire mannequin. However it IS doable. Requires a bunch of foam pieces and very precise measurements to cover up all the metal that is showing.

@@TulsaVideoMagazine the joints seem pretty tight for them to come off, so I don't gotta worry about throwing it or doing a submission onto it, and I'll see if I can find any durable PVC out there. Thank you for the tutorial and the idea of a skeleton mannequin. I will be adding the skeleton into a empty grappling dummy bag

No we decided to go with the double ball joint for more maneuverability. You could go with the single to save money or to increase rigidity. But getting 90 Degree angles and more is very difficult with the single ball.
