Hello Engineer Mica Coll? It is wonderful to note that today, I have succeeded in building an S3 P7 lithium ion battery by listening to your teachings on line, buying your DIY book. Some materials were bought from china and locally in the UK. 18650 batteries were wrongly sent to me from China with pin heads. These were condemned and flat heads were sourced locally. 12v 40 amps BMS was used. There was a slight misconnection and the bms got warmed up and I quickly re adjusted the whole thing with shaky hands. Things went well after this and the discharge voltage came to 12.21v. Heat shrinks were bought and the whole project was wrapped up and ready this evening. This is my first step and I thank God as well as your very self for your open heart and willingness to help others. I intend to try more and will let you know about my adventures in this field. The vruzeng Plastics tend to be falling apart often and the nickel strips are only coated and have nickel flakes peeling off the strips. Many thanks to you sir. Joseph Oshagbemi.

This is very interesting. I found you post and videos by searching how to make your own camp trailer battery. I was thinking of buying a 100Ah deep cell battery to put in my popup trailer to run lights and what not on while camping. It's it possible to build a 12V 100Ah battery to run a camp trailer? What would that cost in parts and what not? Also thought of charging the system with a charger and possibly solar charger while camping

Hi Micah I've learned a lot from your videos and am now ready to dive into the E-Bike world!!! Ok while waiting for my ekit to arrive I'm curious to know how to add the shifter cables to the brake handles that come with the kit. I see the electrical wires attached to the handle and the brake cable housing but no housing for the shift cable. I have the new Xspec 21 gear folding mountain bike w/Shimano shifter; each handle houses a brake/shifter cable. E bike handles have a single housing I'm assuming it's for the brake cable. HELP a senior citizen out bro. Lol

Did you make that battery an now many batteries do you have?

So how do I calculate the needed volts and aH I need to make for any given ebike motor? Obviously, if I have a 32v motor, I need at least a 32v pack, but if i build lets say a 42v pack, will it run longer on that 32v motor?

Individual cell fusing and not using a BMS are two totally different issues. I don't think individual cell fuses are needed for ebike packs IF you are using new, good quality cells (GA cells are very good, as long as they aren't fake). It's just added complexity. I almost always advice AGAINST not using a BMS for ebike purposes. You can do it, but you'll need to use a special balance charger to keep everything balanced and you'll need to be very careful when riding to never let your cells drop below about 2.7V. Once they get to 3V the voltage shoots down rapidly...

Really a well done video and very clearly explained. Like someone else said, PLEASE give us a place where they have the BEST batteries and a way to actually compare batteries, because as you were going through the different batteries, I was quickly lost. I mean you had GREAT info in there, but a lot of it all at once and nothing to look at to really compare to figure out what's best for each application we might have. Thanks, looking forward to this series, and keep up the great work.

If I wanted to build a 12 or in my case 24 volt marine battery how many cells would it take ? To run a trolling motor

Glad I saw your clips, new to lipo battery’s. You talk about 12v, 18v, 24v, 36v for ebikes. I’m interested in making my own 40v like the ones made by a cie who’s name start with the G word for maintaining the lawn. I bought a Chinese battery casing for that « G » thing with already marked places for the plus and minors sign of the batteries. Learn from you how to solder the nickel strip and bms. But that G case has four prongs connectors, and when measuring voltage at those connectors voltage is all wrong and I’m no getting the 40volts there should be. Could you make a clip on dealing with those batteries? Thanks if you do and for all clear informations you gave us. Jean Pierre

thanks for the videos will order your book as i want to build my own ebike batteries. Sorry if it's a dumb question but when you build a battery do you always discharge the cells first. I know you should never dead short any cell but just wandered on the risks in building a pack with fully changed cells, obviously you don't touch the terminals

Another question. I built an 8s3p battery following your guide, do you have a suggestion as to which charger I should use? By my math, 8s x 4v = 32v at full charge... should I be purchasing a 32v charger? Thanks

I'd like to do a 4 series out of samsung 35E. Need to pull 12V minimum and 18V max to power unit. Unit pulls .5 Ah but needs to be ran for 12 hours average. Thinking only needing 4 batteries but would have to use in series correct? Would I get the 14Ah that each battery adds up to (3.5Ah ea)?

I have an engwe engine x. it has a factory 48v 13ah battery and i will fit a second battery using a discharge balancer kit. it has everything I need so no cutting wires etc. I want to install an isolator switch so I don't have to unplug it all the time as they can be a bit zappy. I'm only a casual rider so the bike will be laid up some of the time. do you have any suggestions and direct me to the right part as I want it to be safe.

Hey Micah, enjoying your book DIY Lithium Batteries, and I have a question. Batteries having varying voltage and current ratings, when you are designing a battery system and doing the math, how +/- can you be when doing your calculations? If you are aiming for 52v and the math is adding up to 50.7v or 54.6v what is more acceptable? I am assuming that the charging voltage doesn't change, correct? Thank you for the book, I am gaining lots of knowledge from it!

Is it necessary to put heat sensors between the cells? For extra safety against overheating?

Great video. When charging a battery pack, do you have to charge with the same voltage that the pack produces? For instance, a battery that is 8p 5s that is 21v. Does it have to be charged with 21v? Or could I charge with 12v?

you always charge it with a higher voltage, otherwise the power the amps will never "flow" to your battery. As for the voltage it depends on the battery, look up your datasheet

I wanted to make my own battery pack. But I am still dont know if the 18650 cells that I will be using is the correct one? What are the specs that is right to run an electric scooter. I could see alot of options online. I am online familiar with the battery’s voltage and capacity, other than that I dont not know what to look for for the right battery for my electric scooter. Hello! I got quite brand new scooter(48v)Just used 50km. However the battery is not charging. I think the bms is dead. I tested the battery and it has 33v but then i tested it on bms or on the discharge i got only 2v.

Quick question: sometimes you use nominal 3.7V for calculation and sometimes 4.2V. For this one, for 36V, you would need 9 in series if you count 4.2V each. Why are you using 3.7V in your calculation? Thank you for the reply?

Micah, please do a video showing how to add a backup battery that will work with a Swytch Kit. I bought the Swytch Pro Kit after watching your video and am waiting for delivery... probably a couple of months now. Their info on the pro battery is 7Ah (250Wh). Help! Thanks, Micah. Theoretically yes, but they are likely meant for low power so you'll need a lot of them in parallel to power an ebike.

Not sure if you'll see this, but if I can't exactly match my bikes wattage, can I go slightly over? By about 1.9 Watts specifically. Or does it not even matter if you go over the wattage of the original battery?

I don't know what Mike would say, but it seems to me that you're mistaking amperes for ampere-hours. The two are quite different. The ampere rating is how much current can be drawn (usually continuously) from the cell without overloading it, while the ampere-hour rating is how long a certain current in amperes can be drawn before the cell is considered discharged. The ampere-hour rating of the cells won't make any difference to how much current in amperes each cell can provide. You need to find out from the manufacturer's cell data sheet how much current each cell is rated to supply on a continuous basis. In general, the lower the ampere-hour rating, the higher the rated maximum current is. For example, if each cell is only rated for 5A then you'll need at least 4 of those in parallel to provide the 20A which you want to draw and in reality you'd be better off using at least a 6-cell parallel pack to keep the cells from overheating due to the current draw since the manufacturers seem to over-rate their cells, at least when they're used in a real-life application where they're combined into a battery pack without much air circulation to cool the cells. You'll also need to use several 6-cell parallel packs in series to make up the voltage which your application requires.

It would be the exact same, except you'd end up with a higher AH battery if you use the same number of cells.

Go to the dump. I have found the best batteries 18650s for free. There in the 1000s of discarded laptops people throw away. Usually only one cell is bad the rest are your gold mine. Happy hunting.

Arnel Nepomuceno he explains it clearly. if you have 4 12v sets in parallel but keep in mind you need so many amps so keep in mind you may need to put those 4 in series. also youll need a BMS for the four series....btw im not a pro...i am just learning as well
