DIY Liquid Calcium Fertilizer for Container Gardening using Eggshells from Quail Eggs
In this video, we will show you how to make your own liquid calcium fertilizer for container gardening using quail eggshells and vinegar. Calcium is a vital nutrient for plants and plays a crucial role in cell growth and development. However, both calcium deficiency and excess in the soil can cause problems for vegetable plants.
As a container gardener, you know the importance of making and amending your own soil to provide your plants with the right nutrients to help them thrive. Over time, even ready-made potting soil can become depleted, or the original mix might need to be tailored to match your plant needs.
One of the advantages of liquid calcium soil amendment is its quick absorption and availability to plants. When added to the soil, it immediately dissolves and can be taken up by plant roots. Additionally, liquid calcium can help balance the soil pH level, which is important for optimal plant growth and nutrient uptake. It can also improve soil structure and water retention, which helps plants to grow and thrive.
We will demonstrate how to dry and grind quail eggshells, mix them with vinegar to extract the calcium ions, strain the mixture, and test the calcium content. We will also discuss the proper use and application of liquid calcium as a soil amendment for container gardening.
By the end of this video, you will have learned how to make your own liquid calcium fertilizer, a cost-effective and easy way to supplement your soil with the essential nutrient your plants need to grow healthy and strong. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting, follow along and enhance your container gardening skills with this informative tutorial!
We also show you a calcium test proof that this method works!

I saw this video was 27 minutes long and was thinking I’d be bouncing away after a few minutes because it would be a long, drawn out recitation of other “using eggshells in the garden “ videos I’ve seen. I have to say I was completely wrong. I was thoroughly interested from start to finish and was surprised that 27 minutes had passed by so quickly. Thanks for a super informative video!

I have a blender that can't hold any liquid but it's good for grinding egg shells and dried veggies for my homemade Super Mix Fertilizer. The results of the Calcium test was surprising.

I watched this 20 minutes after it was posted and immediately went and got my baled egg shells that I was gonna grind for my birds to re-consume and instead because of how many shells I have I split the batch and made fertilizer! Thank you so much!

Thanks for sharing. Currently I use powdered calcium made from eggs, but I never thought of making it into a liquid.

For sure do it, but first understand why you want it readily available versus slow release.

Awesome video! I didn't know about adding vinegar to egg shells or testing the calcium level. I just boil my eggshells, strain and reserve the water, hand crush the shells, and dry in the oven. Then, I grind to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle. Sometimes I sprinkle the powder around the base of plants or mix it into soil if I'm just starting to plant. I will definitely try making this solution 😁

That was the Acetate crashing out, as its insoluble in that solution, the calcium is seperated from the acetic acid and the acetate drops out, and the Ca+ is kept with formula to exchange electrons with the neutraliser.

The vinegar reacts with the eggshells to make a totally new chemical compound (calcium acetate). It is not vinegar anymore. It HAS to be diluted. 1 tsp/1 gal.
