Absolutely incredible Chris. Such a great way to create a customizable set of LED boxes. The patterns made with the cricut are NICE!!!! Thanks so much for sharing! While watching I realized you could do the same thing with 3d printed nanoleaf style patterns simply by building the grooves in the faces and sliding in the stencils. Well, I say "simply", obviously that'd take some design work but not bad! Edited to add: Major Kudos for your attention to your audience in the comments section. Like everything else it requires time and as you said, you have a day job as well. Very very nice touch.

I would also recommend a spring loaded connector called the Wago 222 Electrical Connectors. I bought a variety pack off Ebay that will easily connect anywhere from 2 to up to 6 wires at a time. Really well made and work great for connect/disconnect projects. Awesome job on the lights by the way! You have way more patience and time than I do. And know how. LOL! If I had my old work shop back, I would love to take on something like this, but my new house has no where to work. I just got lazy and bought a couple of NanoLeaf light panels. Looking forward to setting them up. Take care!

This is why I love the internet sometimes. Having watched a ton of CM's videos now, it seems he almost exclusively uses Wago connectors and I'm guessing it traces all the way back to this specific comment. Makes connections so much easier.

Hey! Not sure if you thought about it but it would be cool to have some kind of connector on each of the four sides of the frames. Maybe some kind of small retractable cable connector. That way changing the arrangement should be a little bit easier! Would love to see an update on this!

18:00 Oh hey it's the two projects combined. Cool. The plastic still makes the Mando visible. I like the idea nevertheless. Switch images or even the background on the fly... Can you fit more than one sheet? Sounds silly at first, but having another sheet with a simple pattern or colored can further enhance or customize the effects. Your cutout idea should work on triangle frames too. Equilateral cut one edge and you can slide the sheet in. Hex cut would be more complicated... would require a second glue up for a portion of the cutout. Light leak may also be an issue with half the hex having the opening slot. Kudos.

Thanks so much for the comment and for watching! The way I cut it, only 1 acrylic sheet would fit. You could probably get a couple vinyl sheets in there but it would be tight. However you could make a couple simple adjustments if you wanted to fit more in! I thought about the triangle idea as well but as you mentioned, in my mind as well it seemed to be a little more complex lol. Thanks again!

Very nice result. Love the way the light is diffused because of the white acrylic. I was wondering, can you put the template behind the acrylic, so it wouldnt be visible before light shines through? Or maybe it will blur out the lines as the shadow casts through the acrylic? It breaks the illusion a tiny bit, when you can see the image beforehand.

I like the way you think! I tried doing exactly what you explained and your assumption is correct as the image looks a little blurry when placed behind the acrylic. If the image you are making is not super detailed then it still looks cool but not as crisp. my initial idea was to have it behind for the illusion factor but ended up putting it in front of the acrylic since it just looked better. Nice project! I don't know if you tried it, but you can use a laser printer to print onto transparency paper. I know the vinyl is probably a cleaner result but it might be decent enough without all the weeding.

can you go into depth on how you control these special pcb builds after the fact? I've looked into this, but i don't understand how they are "managed"

You are very welcome! For this project I think you could get away with maybe the 150 since the led's are a good distance away from the diffuser material which should eliminate the hot spots from being visible from a less dense led strip. You could maybe even try the 60 first and if it doesn't look good just return it and try the next one up. I'm all about experimenting. However, if you don't want to mess around and waste time, the 300 led's per 5 meters will for sure work!

In all your videos, you show the big bulky power box but I never see where you put it after all said and done.. wear do you hide the transformer boxes??

Hey. If you was to put mirror project on the wall 240cm long and 160cm high with RGBIC behind it ( like TV) would you just stick led tape along the sides and maybe leave offset behind the wall and mirror about 1cm or u would go for aluminium profiles? The problem with profiles is that corner connectors come in 90 degree but 270 V shape is needed! I'm asking because I don't know how to go about it . How much distance should I aim between wall and mirror. Any ideas thanks??

Great question! I would not worry about the aluminum profiles. I would just stick the LED to the back of the mirror. As far as distance from the wall? That will be more of a personal preference on what look you are going for. The bigger the gap between the wall and the mirror will result in a larger glowing area. The closer the mirror is to the wall will result in a more concentrated/smaller lit up area. If you just want a subtle glow coming from behind the mirror, keep it closer to the wall. Hope that helps!

You can definitely hook it up to like a usb power pack but if you are going to be hooking up 5 of them together like I did in this project, you would more than likely be pushing the limits of what a power pack could deliver. How long is your wire between the esp and the strip? I haven't had any flickering issues with my leds and the longest run between esp and the strip is around 2 meters (or 6.5 ft?) which goes to 449 leds and even before I ran additional power to different points in the strip the only issue was that the leds got dimmer towards the end. If you have the time you might want to troubleshoot what really causes the issue so that you can come up with a more "elegant" fix. Maybe try replacing the led with a resistor or use thicker cable? Nevertheless, good video.

Thanks for watching and great question. I think the length on my previous video's distance where the flickering happened was probably close to 6 feet. When it started happening it sounded like the sacrificial pixel was an easy fix so I tried that and it worked. People on my previous video also said a resistor would work so maybe that is the rout to go. That's interesting that it never happened on yours though! What thickness of wire were you using?!

@Chris Maher yeah, sacrificial led is definitely easy and if it works, why not. Just thinking it might be a fun follow-up video if you can solve the issue. I actually used cable that has three 1,5mm2 (or 15awg..?) single strand copper wires because I had some laying around. Same stuff you would find in power cords or wall outlets so pretty overkill. For other installs I bought some cheap "3-pin wire" that is Actually meant for rgb leds. I honestly can't remember the size of that but it's really, really, small. Still does the job. I actually used it in my diy ambilight and the run between the strip and the arduino was unnecessarily long. If I remember correctly, my ambilight had some flickering issues. I think I might've tried to fix it by using thicker cable but finally got rid of it using a resistor.

When using addressable LEDs, it’s a good idea to add a capacitor between Vcc and Gnd. A 1000uF should do the trick and get rid of that flicker.

Thanks for reaching out! So the acrylic I used and left a link for in the description is White acrylic. Its a milky white color. Is the acrylic you are using see through? If it is see through it will not have the same effect as the White acrylic i used in the video. Now if it is see through, you can take sanding paper and sand it really good on both sides so that its no longer see through and this should work pretty well!
