K=KNIT
P=PURL
R=ROW
M=MARKER
BEG=BEGINNING
PM=PLACE THE MARKER
SM=SLIDE THE MARKER
NR=NECK ROW
IR=INCREASING ROW
SSK=SLIP SLIP KNIT
K2TOG=KNIT 2 TOGETHER
Calculations
1. Raise the back of your neck
Whole STS / 2 = X ----------- in my case: 120 / 2 = 60
X / how many rows you want to increase = Y ----------- in my case 60 / 6 rows = 10
Y (10) is your magic number.
You knit Y(10sts) at the time, back and forth until rows you want to increase (6 rows for me)
Sometimes it won't be perfect number like my case, but don't worry, whenever you reach the side marker, that is the time you stop and turn.
2. Dividing sleeves and body
Whole STS / 6 = X -------------- in my case 120 / 6 = 20
X (20) is the magic number
For Back & Front PS: 2X = 20X2=40 sts each
For Sleeve: X =20 sts each side
From the beginning marker
- Count X (20), Place the marker
- Count X (20), Place the marker
- Count 2X (40), Place the marker
- Count X (20), Place the marker
- Count X (20), come back to Beginning marker

  • @BeginnersLUCKraft

    @BeginnersLUCKraft

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Cindy, Decreasing is all up to you and yarn, if the yarn is much thicker, you can decrease every 3 rows, but with my yarn i would do every 5 rows, i guess depends on how many stitches you want to decrease total, but again usually every 1.5" = 5~6 rows would be the ideal number. Here is the long sleeve video, a bit different technique I used in this video, 21:00 start talking about set up for sleeve, and about 26:00 talking about decreasing Long Sleeve Knee long Cardigan ➡ kzread.info/dash/bejne/anWCuMSPitLJZKw.html Enjoy knitting :)

    Thank you for your comment! You don't have to raise a back of your neck if you're knitting a boat neck. But if you're knitting a regular sweater, especially smaller neck, you better raise the back of your neck, because anatomically there is a bit muscle there, so if you knit same as front, sometimes the back pulls the front piece, and have you ever felt a bit choke feeling? That's because you didn't add any row for the back piece. I have another raglan sweater tutorial, and using Japanese short row technique which my fav technique to raise your back piece. Watch 8:45 kzread.info/dash/bejne/g36J07Rxm5rXhNI.html Super easy and it's worth to do it. This just back and forth technique is fine too, but there are a bit gap you create every time you turn the work. So you better use JSR! If you don't get it, ask me anytime! Enjoy knitting!! You have now an excuse (reason) to knit another sweater!

    Hi thank you for your comment and question. To answer your question, in this video, I used RIB for raising back part, because that way easier to find out which side is a front. That's the only reason. In my other video, I used the knit stitch for raising back, I don't think there is any strict rule for it, so it's really up to you, but one thing I should tell you is IF you want to raise a lot of rows, maybe you want to use knit stitch because I don't think way too long RIB at the only back looks nice. Do yo know what I mean? So if you like to use knit stitch for raising your BP, please go ahead :) Enjoy knitting!

I am about to start on this project, and I am using 3.75/4 mm needles and a 3 yarn! however as I was knitting a sample of stockinette to check my gauge, I finished it, but the sample all curled up! this happened in the last sweater I made, and although the edges were made of the moss stitch the garment still became extremely curled! I was wondering if there was any way I could prevent this, or if the sweater fixes the problem through the ribbing? Thank you in advance!

    Hi Nicole, thank you for your comment, I'm glad you like it :) To answer your question, unfortunately stockinette is curled, only you can prevent is, ALL KNIT X 5 or more Rows which is Garter stitch for bottom and top, and for 5 or more stitches on both side, you do same thing ALL Knit on RS & WS. For the sweater, it usually has ribbing around the neck and bottom to avoid curled up. Enjoy knitting!

One last question (for now, sorry to be a bother!), I am making the long sleeve sweater in a 3xl, which the neck size is usually 20"! However in your comments you say to cast on 180 for just an XL, which in my calculations would be very big, especially for a size 4 yarn right? Since this is a gift, I cannot get the person to try it on, but they do wear a 3XL, so using a 3.75/4mm needles with size 3 yarn, I still do not know how many stitches to cast on! @@nicolelockley5786 Ok, at the first of all, this summer top sweater that I knitted with #2 yarn and 3.25 mm needle, and I want to create a bit bigger neck opening. And the one you are talking about the winter grey sweater is with #4 yarn and 5 mm needle. This winter sweater, I started with 96 cast on which was quite small neck opening. Around my neck is 12", so if you want to knit 20" neck sweater, you may need 160 at least, I believe. Also that winter sweater is double neck rib, if that was a single neck rib, maybe you can start less. You should knit sample and make sure about it, I think that's the key for success! And if this is a gift for someone, maybe you should measure 3XL T-shirt and match your project to make sure the size is right. Did you see me wearing that sweater at the end of video? Quite small neck with 96 casts. I'm 5' tall and 100 lb, I usually wear size XS or S. So it's tough to say. Please don't hesitate to ask me any time! I'm willing to help you :) Enjoy knitting!

  • @BeginnersLUCKraft

    @BeginnersLUCKraft

    Thank you for your comment :) To answer your question, it called a short row. For the back of your neck, you raise a bit so it fit you better, because at the back of your neck you have a bit more muscle than your front neck. So you knit only back piece. You need to decide how many rows you want to raise, and do the math. I give you an example, my whole stitches count are 120. you split in half (back and front). Which means you have 60 stitches each back and front. Now you forget about front piece until you finish the short row. And let say I want to knit 10 rows, so 60 / 10 = 6 From Begin Marker (which located in the center of back piece), you knit 6 stiches, then turn the work = now you faced to the wrong side which means "PURL". Then you "PURL 6+6=12 stitches" you must pass the begin marker, then TURN the project, then now YOU ARE FACING TO RIGHT SIDE which is KNITTING SIDE, then knit 18, and so on. In this short row section, you need to knit back an forth for only back piece. This is why you turn the project and KNIT in FLAT, which means there are the knit and purl side! I hope you understand it. After you read this, please watch my video carefully, and now you probably get it. Good luck and Enjoy knitting!

    This is great! One small suggestion - instead adding rows to the neckline rib, the way it's done here which in my opinion isn't aesthetically pleasing and leaves a very visible 'hole' at the end of each row you add, use the german short row method below the rib in the back instead which is super easy and barely visible at all...

    Thank you for this tutorial! I'm planning on knitting my first raglan sweater soon and this video is so helpful! Thanks again for such a great tutorial! 😊

  • @BeginnersLUCKraft

    @BeginnersLUCKraft

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your comment :) To answer your question, when you connect front and back body after you separate your sleeves, you'd already knitted long and big enough for sleeve and body, which means you don't really need any more stitches to add. However if there are some stitches under your armpit area, the shape of sleeve and the body part looks better. So I usually suggest to add from 4 stitches to 8 stitches. How do I decide? It depends on the size of yarn. If the yarn is bigger than #3, I add 4 stitches, and smaller than #3, 8 stitches. Something like that. If I want to knit an oversize garment, I add 8 or more, depend on how big I want to knit. Something like that :) And I have many more raglan sweater tutorials, if you want to try Japanese short row for the back of your neck, here is the one → kzread.info/dash/bejne/g36J07Rxm5rXhNI.html And if you want to knit a long sleeve one, here is the one → kzread.info/dash/bejne/YoOgytaiY92vZNI.html If you have any other question, let me know! You have just started and already working on Sweater? That’s amazing! By the way, my suggestion, I made this sweater way too big which is ok but if you don’t want to knit way to lose Sweater, you better stop increasing way before. Also if you like a thinner shape of sleeves, you should decrease some stitches, watch my other video. This sleeves looks so square because I didn’t decrease any stitches.

    Hi are you asking me about dividing of the neck after the RIB? If so, 96/6=16 - this is your magic number The front 32 stitches The back 32 stitches The sleeves 16 stitches each Total of 96 And start increasing until your desire length, the raglan line must meet under your armpit, same as before :)

    I'm finally ready to try this but have a question about the short rows. After I finish the rib and I'm creating the short rows, which method are you using. I have seen wrap and turn and German short row, but I'm not sure how you're doing that part. Thank you for the wonderful tutorial.

    Hi thank you for your comment and question. To answer your question, my technique in this video, I wasn't using wrap and turn. I knit whatever the stitches and just simply turn. That creates a tiny gap, but it's ok for me. I was going to make a sweater with other technique to close that gap in the future. I couldn't include it in this video, because I am not sure how it calls in English. Anyway, you can use whichever technique you like! Enjoy knitting and Good Luck!

    @@BeginnersLUCKraft Thank you for the reply. I'm using so many different sources to create a sweater and your tutorial is amazing. For my sweater, I'm using the free Southwood Sweater pattern by Galt House Of Yarn. The confusing part is for a size larger than yours, it does not use as many stitches for neckband - they use 96 stitches for large but then have series of increases. I really want to try out your method and i'm not too sure when to do it. So...after knitting the neck band, I'm going to use your formula for magic number and then create the short rows using German short row if I can figure it out. Then I will go on with increases/yoke and separate for sleeves. I hope this turns out well. Your videos are very helpful. the link to their pattern is here - www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/southwood-2. I don't know if YT will allow it.

    @@Enig_Mata Hi again, I will answer you little by little. 1. My casts was 120 to start BECAUSE my yarn was #2 which is a lot thinner. In your pattern, they use worsted yarn which is #4. And the needle I was using is 3.25mm. They are using 4 & 5 mm. I started with 96 casts for other sweater with #4 yarn. It all depends on yarn, needle, and your own tension. Sometimes you need to take a gauge to make sure about it. Method is pretty much same. I was going to upgrade my raglan sweater tutorial, so I will try to help you.

    Thank you for your question. Before answer your question, I must tell you that this is completely customize adjustable sweater, so it's really up to you. ONLY if you use same yarn and needle, you might want to start with 160 to 180. My husband wears 2XL, and I made him to put this onto his neck, and it was OK, but of course tight. Also shoulder and chest are much bigger than me, so if I'm going to knit one for my husband, I will start 160 casts, then after I knit 10 to 20 rows, make sure that fits him. More question, let me know :) Enjoy knitting!

    Thank you for your comment! Here is my answer, please read carefully! 1. My neck collar sts are 120. 2. My magic # is 120 / 6 = 20 3. From BEG(start) marker, count 20 (or your magic #) each left and right, then add markers both side. Between those 2 makers, you have 40 (magic # X 2) sts including BEG marker. 4. This BEG marker should be in the middle of those 2 new markers. 5. And This BEG marker is your back piece which means your BEG marker is in the center of your back piece. 6. Count 20 (or your magic #) from both new markers, then add marker each side. These 20 sts will be both side of your sleeves. 7. Left over sts which is between sleeves markers you just added, it should be same sts # as back piece which is 40 (or your magic # X2), this is your front piece. Again, for the back piece, I have 40 sts (or your magic # X2) For both Sleeves: I have 20 sts EACH (or your magic # EACH) And for front piece, same as back, I have 40 sts (your magic # X2) 40(back) + (20X2: Sleeves) + 40(front) = 120 sts Total I hope you understand it, but if not, jsut let me know your collar stitch number. I will make sure about it! Enjoy knitting!

    Thank you for your comment. This is a basic raglan sweater, and I didn't explain that part enough. You're right, when you turn the project, you create a gap, but if you pull your working yarn a bit more, it makes a little smaller, however, if you can't or you don't like it, you have to use a short row technique. Have you heard about this technique? The most of beginners sometimes struggle about this technique, so I purposely didn't add it. But I have another raglan sweater with cable design, here is the link kzread.info/dash/bejne/g36J07Rxm5rXhNI.html And here is the sweater with hood kzread.info/dash/bejne/m2tsp5iCnZi2ppc.html I used Japanese Short Row Technique for the back of neck. Maybe the one with hood easier for you to understand. When you use this technique, you can close the gap completely! Good luck and Enjoy knitting!
