DIY Kayak gear leashes, and is it worth it?
I have recently been trying to put my own spin on making my own custom gear leashes out weed eater cord. After a bit of trial and error I finally learned the tricks needed to get something close to what I was looking for. It the time it took me to learn those trick I found some gear leashes close to what I was trying to make online for a fraction of the coast of the ones I was making. This made me question, “Was I just wasting my time?”
In this video I quickly go over how the gear leashes are made and then talk about whether or not it is worth trying it out for yourself. I end the video with my tips if you plan to try this out for yourself.
Skip to 6:07 if you just want some tips for trying this yourself.

Glad someone had the guts to make a video about this. It's result available and it's cheap. I was in the process of making one and I had to go out hunting for crimps and carabinas. When I realized how much unwound have to spend just to make two, I saw a pack of 6 in a tackle shop with everything complete for $100.00 of our currency. To make two of the DIY ones would have cost way more just to get all the materials and parts. Plus like you, I had to donut over three times and leave the coil in the pipe, for a few days and is still there in the hopes it retains the shape I'm going for. Plus when I reversed the coil the first time it looked like shut and was not pulling in together to firm a tight spring coil. Save yourself some time and headache and by them or use paracord instead.

Whoa you’re spending way too much money boss. Might I suggest Wendell fishing on KZread? He does a leash with a heat gun and an old phone cord and a couple of shrink on connectors and the product comes out great. I have made probably 20 of these for gifts, and they are very well received.

I've made several of these with weed trimmer line that I had on hand. I used a wood dowel rather than a pipe. I used a drill to turn the dowel while I held tension on the line. Some have turned out better than others...trial/error..learn as you go. I think that some of the issues with inconsistent coils can be attributed to inconsistent tension when wrapping the line around your jig/pipe. Part of the whole DIY thing is having the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Not everyone gets the same enjoyment from that. That why we have a brazilian flavors of candy, soda, etc... different tastes and desires

The weedeater line ones 10 times stronger those cheap ones you buy in the bag break really easy and is absolute garbage which will end up having somebody or you losing some expensive equipment and rods and reels so it’s way worth to make your own knowing that it’s gonna be way more durable and save your gear
