DIY: Ilder/Tensioner Pulley Troubleshooting

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Video tutorial on how to determine if you have a faulty or failing idler/tensioner pulley on your vehicle's engine. These pulleys do wear out over time and will need to be replaced. If you are able to catch it in the right time, this will prevent any excessive damage or unneeded down time for repairs on your vehicle. Maintenance intervals do vary depending on manufacturer and also the quality of bearing found in the pulley. When replacing, be sure to use a quality part as it will last much longer and reduce premature failure. This particular tutorial was done on a 1997 BMW 540i equipped with a 4.4L V8.

What components can cause issues:
-no grease, therefore no lubrication which can either cause the bearing to burn out or seize up
-the bearing cage can break
-worn bearings, therefore causing play
What to look for:
-squeaking or chirping when the engine is running
-wobbling on the pulley when it is turning
Tests which can be done:
-when the engine is running, watch the pulley for any wobbling or wandering
-which the engine off, wobble the pulley by hand, sometimes this can be done with the belt on, but it's much easier when it's off
-removing the belt, spin the pulley and listen for noisy bearings
-remove the pulley and simply shake it to listen for loose bearings

    I have a 06 Nissan. Frontier xe manual. I have a loud vibration noise while accelerating. But goes away once in neutral or not giving gas. Mine has tensioner pulley. I changed my drive shaft support bearing and u joints thinking that was the problem and it's still doing it. I had a guy listen to the noise while I gave it gas. But it takes longer to make the noise while revving it in neutral. He said it is the tensioner. I replaced just the bearing and not the whole assembly. Well it's still making the noise. Could the other portion of the tensioner be the cause of the loud vibration? I did just the bearing because it cost $17 compared to the assembly $72. I'm sick of dumping money I dont have in this truck. This has been the most problematic vehicle I've ever owned. I cant afford a mechanic or a new truck. The support bearing was bad and needed to be changed anyway(lots of slop) so I'm trying to look at the cup half full. Thanks and hopefully you will respond!

    Great video. I purchased a sienna and I hear a soundby the belt. I thought it was a water pump which hopefully it is not. When I press gas the noise comes up and when I release it theasy sound goes off. So I put 2w oil on the 2 pulley tensioner and the regular pulley and the sound minimized. So I believe it is a tensioner pulley that is worn and dry. Thanks again for the video. Helped me a lot.

  • @4DIYers

    @4DIYers

    3 жыл бұрын

    Some new bearings do have a small amount of play, it's intended for expansion during operation as it'll warm up. Just make sure it's not a cheap bearing though, that maybe an indication of poor tolerances during production.

  • @4DIYers

    @4DIYers

    9 ай бұрын

    Sounds like you need a pulley or tensioner. If the pulley is wobbling, then the bearing is most likely bad. If the belt is bouncing, then it's a faulty tension spring.

    When you have your belt off check all the other pulleys on all the other belt driven accessories, alternator, A/C , etc. Maybe something else is going and causing bearing to fail.
