Update (Jan/16) - I used this same process to dye a pair of leather cowboy boots - • DIY - How to Dye Leath...
***
How to dye a leather bag!! I dyed my beloved Balenciaga Pompon (2009 Agneau Leather) and I absolutely love how it turned out. The entire process took me 3 days with drying time and actual work time was probably around 6 hours (around 2 hours per day).
This was quite a scary decision and hopefully the dye job will hold up well... I definitely recommend doing some research before deciding to embark on a similar dye DIY. Below are links to a few resources that I found very helpful when deciding whether to dye my bag:

forum.purseblog.com/balenciaga...
Here is what you need:
- A large workspace - a tiled floor works well
- Bedsheets, garbage bags, paper, or puppy pee pads to cover the workspace
- One Fiebing's Leather Dye Kit (contains 118ml dye and cotton dauber) - this is a penetrating dye but it doesn't say that anywhere on the packaging - amzn.to/2pVbaK0
- One Tarrago Color Dye Self-Shine Kit (contains instructions, 25ml preparer, 25ml dye, small sponge, and small brush) - amzn.to/3AxC6nm
- Waterproof gloves
- Mildly abrasive scrubber sponge
- Small foam brush
- Rubbing alcohol
- Cotton swabs or a small concealer/makeup brush you no longer use
- Old washcloth
1:38 About the dye
4:21 Step 1 - Prep the leather by using the "Preparer" included in the Tarrago kit. Work the product into the leather by buffing it in with a mildly abrasive sponge.
5:52 Step 2 - Apply a thin coat of the Fiebing's Penetrating Leather Dye right after preparing the leather (do not wait for the leather to dry). Use a small foam brush to apply the dye to large areas and the dauber to apply the dye to nooks & crannies. When the bag is somewhat dry to the touch, apply a second coat. Let dry for 24 hours.
8:15 Optional - Once your bag is dry to the touch, weigh your bag down with books and hang it up to stretch out the leather.
8:38 Step 3 - Apply a thin layer of the Self-Shine Dye included in the Tarrago kit. Work the product into the leather with a sponge in a circular motion. Use a small foam brush to apply the dye to large areas and the small brush included in the Tarrago kit for the nooks & crannies. Wait a few hours and apply a second coat. Touch up the bag with the small brush as needed.
10:36 Step 4 - Clean off any hardware with some rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs (or a small concealer brush, which I highly recommend).

I finished the project I did with my G21 Day bag, it was an amazing and exciting experienced seeing the transformation that happened. I did not video my project but the end result is amazing. I followed every single pointers in your list and I used the Fiebing's Balm to seal the dye. No dye transfer at all, I also put my apple leather conditioner to finish it all. The leather remains soft and supple! Thanks!
I cannot get over this video! I can't believe how well the dye process turned out. Your bag looks brand new! Wow - thanks so much for sharing!

+Style Domination thanks so much!! i was surprised by how well it turned out. :)
Your video tutorials are so very helpful. I've wanted to dye a leather bag of mine for some time now and am still somewhat hesitant to try this however, you have explained the process/steps so clearly that I'm thinking I may just take the plunge. tfs!
Did this recently with a marc Jacobs bag and so far I like the results
Your bag came out amazing. I brought my Miu Miu vintage bag to the leather shop for dieying and refinishing, and I hope it turns out as good as yours. I didn’t realize it could be done at home. Great job
THIS IS A LIFESAVER!!! I bought a Givenchy Nightengale sight unseen and when it arrived it was a destroyed by water damage. This process left me with a brand new (looking) Givenchy, I could'nt be happier!!!!

Amanda Richard Beautiful! I found this video as I am looking to dye a Fendi bag black. How has the dye been holding up? Do you experience any color transfer from the dye? You have done and amazing job.
Nice job when I’m dying bags I always use a lot news paper and cardboards for the base of the bag it just helps he structure so applying is easy
I did a leather jacket like this and it turned out great. Thank you so much for the great tutorial.
this is a fantastic tutorial. Thanks for posting. I've always been annoyed with the coppery color that you get from the fiebeng's. This seams like a perfect process with the Terrago. I'm gonna try this on a white jacket I have on the way.

@antoine gabrielle - i used the small brush near the fabric/zippers but since the fabric on my bag was black, i didn't have to be too careful. for any other colour fabric, i would have bought a smaller stiffer brush to tackle those areas.
Hi, I followed your tutorial and my bag turned out great! Thank you!
Thanks! Just dyed my red and pink leather fossil bag to medium brown with these exact instructions! Was nervous after the Fiebings (looked a little burgundy and mottled) but the Torrago coat smoothed everything out!Thanks again!! Now hoping the dye doesn't come off on me or my clothes!

What a nice tutorial! Thank you for putting it up. I am going to dye one of my older leather bags now. As far as the dye transferring on to your hands, there is a spritz on leather finish that I have used on my riding boots and leather saddles that gives a smooth feel and stops the conditioners and dyes from bleeding through. It might work on the handles for you. It is from a company called Leather Therapy. I've used their products for several years and have had good luck with them.

Hi, is it the Leather Therapy Water repellant 8 fl. oz? I also found Leather Therapy finish leather conditioner treatment both of them are from Amazon. I dug in my home storage unit and found my old Balenciaga G21 Day bag and I'm planning to dye it with the same process you did. I hope it turned out s good as yours.
amazing detail you have brought to the subject thank you.
Thank you so much for posting! I just did the first coat of dye on a clutch I found. Your tutorial was the most helpful on the Internet and really took the fear away.

Do you need both types of dye or can you use just the first one? I have a dark brown Versace bag I'd like to dye black, I am assuming since it's already dark it would not be difficult. I am mostly worried about protecting the fabric lining.
Thanks for the informative video, hanging with book inside is good idea. I do think it's important to let 1st coat to dry completely, to avoid sticky surface. Great idea on hardware, thank you. I like that u left the accessories undyed, looks great!
I came here to find out I do NOT need a half gallon of dye, and you made the job look easy! THANK YOU!

Do you have one question did you receive any transfer when using the bag normally since you've had it for a while now
@AuthenblissityMain
7 жыл бұрын
i haven't had any transfer except on my hands from the handles. no issues with the strap being on my shoulder though so maybe the leather is different/more absorbent on the handles. i don't wear the bag with light colours though, just in case... but i do store it in a white dust bag with no issues.
Gorgeous result!
I just wanted to thank you for your beautifully done video, it's perfect! This is the BEST video on KZread, so clear, concise & beautifully spoken. You gave me the confidence to dye a bag that I really want to be black, it's currently a chalk color. Thank you! 🙂

You deserve real kuddos for producing such a wonderful, professionally done, video! With the kind of quality work that you put into that as well as your bag I think you could be trusted to do anything well. BTW, I don't recall you mentioning why you had to dye the bag with 2 different dyes. Would you explain? Thanks!
@AuthenblissityMain
8 жыл бұрын
+freedommascot thanks so much! the first dye is a penetrating dye, which sinks into the leather; however, it is not jet black but rather leaves a bit of a brownish/metallic hue to the bag. the 2nd dye is a self-shine dye, which sits on top of the leather. if you use this one by itself, i read that it could potentially flake off as it is not absorbed by the leather; however, it is jet black.
I wish I had seen this video before attempting to dye my old Ferragamo bag black a couple years ago. No matter how many Fiebings coat I would layer on, it would still have an unflattering brownish hue and was never a true black. After awhile I decided i disliked the color, completely regretted ever trying to dye it in the first place as I preferred the old color over the new and so I tossed it. :( I am however consider dying my beloved taupe Proenza Schouler PS11 to black (more versatile) and I'm going to use the steps provided in this video. Hopefully it'll bring it back to life and make it look new like it did with your Balenciaga. Thanks for posting this! :)

+Esther Kim yes i was surprised when the fiebings dye dried and had that strange metallic sheen to it... i was worried it would look like that when i was done but thankfully the tarrago was jet black. good luck with your PS11!!
Hi what was the long term effect? Did the dye come off onto clothing? Thanks
It turned out so well Lesley! Amazing job. I want to do this to a Chanel bag, but I'm slightly terrified lol. Although it's not like I've been using it since I stained it, so I don't think I can make it worse. I'll have to research it some more but you've inspired me haha :) x

Hi, you are right ...!!! you must use tarrago for final coat...!!!!....i just done it and the result was so good...my leather bag like the same condition when i was purchasing ...honestly i was first following one other video where just using Fiebings...and yes even i after used leather softener and protector...that coopery shine didnt went away....so i bought Terrago black together with praparer.... ...before applying black i use praperer...and then black i coat....Thank you so much..!

You've done a great job babe! I wanna dye mine too!!!!! :)
Now we need a video of you dyeing those gloves 😁 lol, j/k. Great video. I just purchased a really nice leather handbag that somebody marked down super cheap because it is faded. I also have a white leather Michael Kors bag that is not white anymore and I've tried with no luck 2 refurbish it. I know there is a way to fix it I'm sure, but I just want to dye it black because I'm not a big fan of white bags only for the fact that they get dirty quick. They're pretty but not my thing. I'm excited for my bag to arrive and I will order this dye. I'm sure it will turn out as good as yours but if not I have nothing to lose since I don't use the white leather one that I was given by a friend a few years ago.
Very, very thorough and helpful video. I am going to try this process on my expensive Tumi leather bag. Overall, its in good shape except for the edges where it came into contact with the airplane seats as I placed it under the seat in front of me. I wanted to know if you think I could just do the areas of my bag that show wear and tear instead of the entire bag. Again, thanks for this video - you are delight to watch!

Hi the color came out metallic, Amy advice on getting rid of that metallic effect? Thank you 😊
+bagobeans not sure why i can't reply directly to your comment but thank you for your comments. i don't think you've previously asked me about dye transfer. if you had, i would have answered you as i have a few other people in the YT comments. anyway, if you had read the rest of the comments, you would have seen that after i got a chance to use my bag, i did reply to a few people re. the dye on the handles transferring to my hands when my hands were freshly lotioned. there has still been no colour transfer from the shoulder strap or onto my clothing - and i think the white dustbag would be a relatively good indication of potential colour transfer onto clothing items (especially seeing as how i had not used the bag enough to provide any other information at that point in time when the question was asked of me).
Great job!
Great jod! May I know can I use the same technique and products to dye Prada Saffiano leather bag? Thanks in advance!

I love your demonstration cuz it’s so easy to follow each step. Do you need to apply the finish gloss at the end?

Thank you! I didn't put on a finish gloss at the end -- I use the self-shine dye and then I just buff the surface with a cloth.
Do you think that this process would work to dye a light bag a light color? Or would it be best to always go darker?
Great job and explanation!
Hi there. Thanks for posting this. Just wondering, how many bottles of dye did you use? And if you could just use 1 type instead of both?

Amazing.
Wow! Well done! Yes, I'm interested in how the dye is holding up. I will look through your videos to see if u already have a follow up. I'm interested in dyeing my pink Balenciaga Work bag that I just purchased used. The corners and handles look a little rugged. Do you think it was easy because you chose black? Maybe the color won't come out as planned if I use pink?

one of my viewers sent me a photo of her balenciaga first that she had just dyed a bright blue and it looked amazing! it may be difficult to match the exact shade of pink of your current work bag. i just dyed the bag recently and i'm about to bring it with me on vacay to really test it out. i will say that when i have a lot of hand cream on, some of the black does transfer onto my hands from the handles... but when my hands are dry, there is no transfer. please let me know what you decide to do with your work! :)
This is so helpful! I just thought of dying my turquoise blue Balenciaga because I wish I had gotten it in black and I found your video! Yay! How is yours holding up has it transferred or come off at all?
@AuthenblissityMain
11 күн бұрын
The bag itself has held up really well! I don't use it that often but there's been no colour transfer or fading. I do use the strap (on other bags) regularly and there's been some fading there. You can see a bit of the green at the stitching but I haven't noticed any colour transfer onto clothing or anything like that. I hope this helps!
Does it change the feel of the leather after dying it? For a buttery soft leather, i wonder if the dye would make it less soft. Would anyone know by any chance? thank you!
Great tutorial and I'm glad the dye didn't transfer with your bag but I had a different experience and I just want to warn people to be careful. I followed these directions to dye a light blue Marc Jacobs Hillier bag black and the dye has been rubbing off on my clothes (after drying for 2 days and rubbing with paper towel to get excess dye off). I hope it won't rub off as much with each wear but I would not wear white or light color clothes with it. The dye also turned the silver toned metal a bronze color that won't come off with alcohol. I had to scrub it for hours with acetone to get the color out of the metal. I would recommend to avoid painting over the hardware! Other than the dye transfer, the bag looks really good. The dyes really penetrated the leather. Thanks for the tutorial.
@AuthenblissityMain

i'm sorry to hear about the colour transfer and the alcohol not working to take the dye off the hardware - thank you for sharing your experience. this is the only bag i've dyed so it's good to have other perspectives. your comment is very helpful.
Love the looks. I will recomend to add some leather care to make the bag last longer.

Wow, you did such a good job with dying it. I am thinking about buying a used Balenciaga bag in a color that I don't really like (because it's cheap) and then dye it black. But I was wondering if the leather dye makes the feel of the bag different? I mean, does it seem a little less smooshy and soft than before, or is it completely the same touch?
@AuthenblissityMain
10 жыл бұрын
thank you! :) my bag hadn't really gotten to the super smooshy stage yet but i found the texture didn't change much after dyeing it. i think the key is to do very thin layers of dye. only issue i've had with my bag is that the colour on the handles will sometimes transfer to my hands, especially if my hands are freshly lotioned.
Thanks for your video. How did you dye the fabric in the zipper?
Great tutorial! Wondering if anyone has found the dye to rub off on clothing and skin over time? (Specifically the strap.) I was warned about this, but not sure if it’s something to be concerned about or not?
Would it bleed in the rain?
I just dyed my Ferragamo hobo bag. Thanks so much. I followed your video and it turned out great. If I could I would send a picture. One question: I use Cadillac leather cleaner and conditioner on my leather products. Can I use a product on the dyed bag? Have you ever done that? Thanks again, Roe
@AuthenblissityMain
5 жыл бұрын
i'm so glad it worked out!! unfortunately, i'm not sure about the leather cleaner and conditioner--i don't use anything on my bags. maybe you could test a small area before applying the products to the entire bag?
Hi, this was a really informative and concise. And brave! Can I ask, how did you ensure the dye did not get on the lining or on the areas where you kept the pale green color? I'm considering dying my brown Mackage jacket to black but I don't want to ruin the hardware or the lining. Thanks in advance!
@AuthenblissityMain
9 жыл бұрын
thank you very much! i just applied the dye carefully on the inside leather... it helped that the lining of my bag was black. as for the hardware, i found i could take it off with rubbing alcohol after the fact, but someone mentioned it was difficult for her to remove the dye afterward... you could tape your hardware to help protect it from the dye. hope this helps!
Hii Instead of bag can I dye my leather jacket bye following the same steps???
Great job however did you dye the hardware too? If so did it stay put
you guys are much braver than me - I am going to test the waters with a much more inexpensive leather. My goal is to dye mine in a rich slightly metallic bronze color. I have read that you can can do from dark to a lighter but I am still undecided. Great tutorial ...how did you get the leather draw string out?

Thank you for posting, it's very helpful! Can the dye be used for demin purse?
@AuthenblissityMain

Thank so much! The dye I used is just for leather. I think for denim, you might want to look for a different dye, perhaps one for fabric. Good luck!
Hi! Would this dye process work with boots? I would like to dye a tan pair of boots to black but want to make sure the final black dye is shiny and not opaque. I like the way your leather bag came out- shiny black.
@eileenfuentes6975
5 жыл бұрын
I know this is 4 years later but I'm sharing my thoughts in case somebody sees your comment and has the same question. I'm sure it would work if they are genuine leather of course. Leather is leather whether it's a purse, jacket, boots,... I haven't done my research since this is the first video I have found on the subject but I'm sure there is a way to transform it into a shiny finish. Sort of like painting your nails with the matte top coat and a few days later instead of removing the nail polish completely, just go over the Polish with a shine top coat. If that makes sense... And if not there are many products out there that you could layer on top of this matte color to transform from a matte finish to a shiny finish. Now you have me curious and I will look it up sometime today.
Excellent job! I wish you could do mine, I don't have the patience to do it. Do you know if there is a spray to do it faster instead of rubbing?
