DIY Hot Knife for cutting fabric

If you are curious how to make your own hot knife for making cuts that won't fray on your camper and boat projects just watch our video for step by step instructions. This is a super easy 10 min project that will allow you take a Harbor Freight or similar 100 watt or higher pistol grip style soldering iron and turn it into a awesome hot knife for cutting nylon farbic or nylon webbing.

I made mine with a piece of copper wire just bent it to like an "n" shape with a 1 inch main blade area, and then hammered the cutting surface to flat with a blade shape. Makes for a better/larger cutting surface than the tiny one the iron comes with.

Your very welcome. While I was not as happy with the new hot knife as I was the original one I made due to its lower wattage I do use that new one quite a bit due to its different style blade. It works better for making sharp corners which comes in handy.
I’m wondering how thick of a fabric can be cut - I want to cut an outdoor polypropylene rug. Any ideas?

The thicker the material the longer it will take to melt through it. I never tried cutting that type of material with a hot knife. Obviously the higher wattage iron you use the hotter it will get and cut faster
