Are the barber shops still closed and you need another haircut? Well, in this video, I’m showing you how to trim your hair from home with the Philips Norelco Series 5000 Beard, Hair and Stubble trimmer, Model BT5511.
Now as most of us are living in quarantine in our homes, we may have come to find out that our hair is growing a bit long, as the days pass and the barber shops are closed. So, that leaves us with little option, other than to have someone in our family cut our hair or cut our hair ourselves.
Now a DIY home haircut or cutting our own hair anywhere is definitely intimidating. It’s intimidating to myself. I know some barbers out there that won’t even cut their own hair. But the good news is that while we are all in quarantine, we really don’t have to see anybody. So we can practice cutting our hair from home and if we mess up, it’s not a big deal.
As you may find that many dedicated hair clippers are sold out or unavailable, including the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000, one of the best options is to find out what haircut trimmers are left in stock. In this case, I’ve found the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 5500 to be one of those in stock hair trimmers.
Now, being labeled as a beard and stubble trimmer, many consumers are passing this hair trimmer by without considering its use for cutting their own hair from home. This is good news for those who are still looking for an available trimmer for their DIY home haircut, as this product is most definitely made for cutting your hair, as indicated by the included hair guards.
Taking a look at the hair guards, you will see that there is a short hair guard for cutting those low fades, as well as a long hair guard for those looking to keep their hair with a bit more length.
Accompanying these Philips Series 5000 hair guards, you will also find a beard and stubble comb. This guard rounds out a set of three guards that make the Philips Beard Trimmer 5500 a versatile all-in-one beard, hair and stubble trimmer.
Philips Norelco touts the Series 5000 Beard and Stubble trimmer for its 40 length adjustable settings and DualCut steel blades.
If you take a look at my previous video on the Philips 5100, you’ll notice that the Beard Trimmer 5500 is basically a new and improved model in the Series 5000 family.
While the Philips Norelco Series 5100 includes 3 beard and hair combs that work in combination with a built in zoom wheel, the Beard trimmer 5500 includes 3 identical combs that hold only slight variations in design and feature the same hair lift technology that guides hairs to the blade for efficient one pass trimming.
For beard and hair trimming, the Philips 5100 is capable of cutting at 34 length settings from 0.4mm to 13mm, while this Philips Series 5000 trimmer takes it up a notch, incorporating 40 precision length settings ranging from 0.4mm to 20mm. This range of cutting lengths is perfect for cutting your own hair at home.
As far as battery life, the Philips Norelco Series 5100 Beard and Head Trimmer uses a Lithium-ion battery and requires 1hr of charge time for 70 minutes of cordless use.
However, this Philips 5000 Beard Trimmer outperforms, utilizing a lithium-ion battery that requires 1hr of charge time for 90 minutes of use.
The Philips Series 5000 also has a charging indicator light, which is absent from the Series 5100 and you’ll notice an internal LED light that illuminates on the Beard Trimmer 5500 as you turn its zoom wheel.
Both Philips trimmers can be used plugged in for continuous use with your DIY home haircut.
The Series 5100 and Beard Trimmer Series 5000, along with their attachments, are both fully washable.
However, these Philips hair trimmers are only to be used in dry condition and cannot be used while bathing or in the shower.

Cool haircut Paul I’m going to get one of those. I like Philips trimmers they work good I use a 3mm guard. On top or let it grow out more to a 4mm then 1mm sides. Or zero. Take care. Man keep going strong Paul

Thanks, @GroomReviews. was really a great video on how to cut your own hair with the different length settings in sequence. Unfortunately, I didn't have the BT5511 but an old QT4000. Those techniques still worked. Only left the top undone which is tricky.

During this time in quarantine, it is a perfect opportunity to jump in, have fun with it, make some mistakes and surprise yourself with what you can accomplish. I know that it can definitely feel scary and intimidating cutting your hair for the first time, but you don't have to be perfect. If you ask someone to try to hit a golf ball for the first time or shoot a basketball or drive a car, they're going to feel awkward and uncertain because it's something they've never tried before. But over time, these once seemingly difficult tasks become part of your knowledge base and skills and your confidence grows. You are able to hit that ball, sink that shot, drive that car and cut your hair from home like second nature. So, jump in there, and use this as a learning experience. It's interesting that this is advertised as a beard and stubble trimmer, yet it has the longest adjustment setting (20mm) out of all the Norelco hair clipper products. The longest setting of many of the hair clippers is 16mm. I like having the option to keep my hair longer on top with the 20mm setting.

Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to test out the Philips QT4001 beard trimmer, so I cannot speak to its performance and whether it would work for cutting your hair from home. That said, I have looked at the product and see that this trimmer includes a beard guard with cutting lengths from 1 to 10mm. If you have a hair style that fits within this cutting range, you can always test out and see if it works for you.
