No, you're not missing anything. It is just as bad as it looks.

I think it is wrong circuit the trasistor biasing and input connection are questionable

Try basic radio by Marvin Tepper or books by Bernard Grob, Malvino, Boylestad for V K Mehta for knowledge of basic electronics.
