You don't even notice the difference and you can make them in any shape you want! I always get a lot of compliments on them, and people are surprised it's basically just painted straws 😂 Let me know how it goes!

Hi what paint did you use? Did you have to prime the straws 😊
I tried it out and i love it!!! I didnt have wire so i used wool, needless to say it took about 3 hours just to get the structure (i made the one with the 30 straws) thank you so much for making this video 😄😄😄😄

Thank you 💖 Oh, I feel yah... When I tried to make it the first time around, I used some transparent nylon thread, and omg, I couldn't get it to stay put! 😂 Even with tons of knots, somewhere it ended up always being a bit loose and the whole thing collapsed! I actually admire the fact that you were able to make it work!!!
@madamecochon-swinia-varken6773
6 жыл бұрын
It was actually really hard to make it because i had to use only one thread and it was super long and it always took ages just to put one thread through the straw and it was also very hard to put wool in a straw that already had wool in it because its thick but in the end it looked very nice and i love the way it turned out i am very thankful for your video :-)
The exact clever kind of DIY that I needed! Thanks!

I have two suggestions. One is to use full length straws. The other is to use half length straws. This might help to minimise waste. Everything else is wonderful!
Omg I must say you are a genius..

Omg, thank you 🙈
If you haven’t checked his youtube channel, Kevin Rupard took inpso from this, and made copper colored geometric shapes! He’s good I hope you both can collab on an idea someday
Himmeli is an old Finnish Christmas decoration, made from hay straws and yarn, they kinda look like chandeliers. They were hung from the cottage ceilings. It's pronounced /ˈhimːeli/ and the word is derived from the Swedish word himmel, meaning sky or heaven. I'll most likely make the 30-piece one, I like that shape a lot
@DIYwithLily
4 жыл бұрын
Oh awesome! In German we also use Himmel for sky, so I always wondered if there was a connection!

I used simple gold spray paint. Any kind works :)
So super happy I found your video! Thank you! Did you put anything between the spaces between straws and paint over it? Your corners look so polished!
@DIYwithLily

I used hot glue and shaped it with my finger (after dipping in water). It makes the corners look super professional, but, not gonna lie, you can easily *burn* your fingertips like this ⚠️ 😂 I try to work quickly!

Thank you! The lighter gold is that typical gold spray paint by Krylon (used on the pyramid). The darker, old gold, was from some italian brand I had never heard of (don't have the spray paint can anymore, to check the correct name), that I bought at a small crafts store.

So excited for this tutorial! I’m using this for my center pieces for my wedding! How much wire do you need for one of these?
Hi! What kind of wire did you use that was just flexible enough?
Thank you for this video, it's exactly what I'm looking for! I never thought to use straws, kinda blew my mind. Do you think acrylic paint would work in place of spray paint?
@DIYwithLily
4 жыл бұрын
I think so! The only thing I would say is, start with a thin layers and if you want to avoid brush marks, use sponge. It will take you a bit longer to get to the same opaque gold (plastic in general is a bit hard to paint). Or maybe, if you find it, use paper straws and it will be way easier to paint with acrylic paint 😊

I had no idea 😮 Thank you so much for sharing!
A couple of tips! - make sure you don’t use the bendy straws. If you include the bendy part, it’s likely to make your piece look a little lopsided - if you’re like me and too lazy to do the copper wire, try glue dots instead! This will hold together the pieces, but still flexible enough to move it around as needed. Glue dots inside the piece, then hot glue at the end outside. - Don’t use normal thread! This will just make everything more complicated - if you think you can get away with only using hot glue… you’re wrong 😂 *speaking from experience Hope this helps someone :)
Love it!
