DIY gate remote opener for under 50$

Ғылым және технология

I decided to make a system for as cheap as possible and still as good as possible. I wanted it to be reliable, good looking and cheap.
Price for the parts is roughly around 30$.
I used cheap Arduino clones of eBay, Arduino modules with relays, a reciver module with remote, some LED's and a finished warning light enclosure. None of those cost more the 5$ per piece.
Everything else was made by me.
Hope you will get a similar idea and share you work and enjoy the video!
Here are some links for buying the parts:

    Great job! The only thing I would do differently, I would use a motorbike sprocket and a motorbike chain for longevity. Just cut the chain open, lay it straight and weld on the bottom where your rail is. With some grease that'll last longer than the aluminium rail. Thanks for the video!

    I'm thinking about doing a similar project but I wanna use ESP8266 or 32 instead of Arduino. Have you thought about including a current sensor (they are cheap) to know when the motor is consuming to much current and make a protection for the motor itself (overload) and for an object/person/animal which can be stopping the gate? Btw, nice job ;)

    Instead of using a rail, why didn't you use the bike chain. Bolt to gate at one end, and a tensioning thread at other end. We use them in Australia for commercial gates as you don't need to be so accurate about the rail meting the sprocket. The motor has two idle sprockets lower then the drive, chain goes under idle, up over drive then under second idle. As you said, you needed the springs as the gate lifted up. You don't with chains, and a lot of the gates are not perfectly straight, and a lot of the rails o he ground are not perfectly level. Chain doesn't care. Nice work. Keep it up.

  • @idiy8074

    @idiy8074

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, that was an option. I just didn't like the idea of having my chain hanging across the entire fence. More of a personal choice than anything. If I had a few bike chains, I'd probably rather welded them together on a single long bracket to get a rail. And, also, wanted to know if the rail that I can make for cheap will hold up, cause I had no idea :D

    Great build. FWIW i would change it to only use a single button for open, stop and close all you need to do is know the current and last state. also did you program any homing sequence to allow for if gate is manually opened and then powered on? Also i would add in an opto input to not allow closing while the beam is interrupted, but then that would probably make this a $65 build:)

  • @idiy8074

    @idiy8074

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Andrew Davis No homing option, but that is a good idea I just might implement. I went with a two button option so I can choose the direction of movement. You know when sometimes you close the gate halfway and then you realize you need to open it from whatever reason.... Or just if you want to play with it the entire afternoon because you can :D I said to myself a long time ago, no safety triggers on the gate. If something or someone gets in the line of movement, there's gonna be some damage! And suddenly when people know it's not gonna stop, they're really careful about it ;)

    Hi Sir, I am from the Philippines. We have a sliding steel fence gate in our home and was thinking to improve it by making it automatic gate using a button or a wireless switch. Then while googling, I saw several versions but when I came across your video, I did like it than the others. Would you kindly help me with the schematic or circuit diagram as well as the code for the arduino? I'd like to do it the same as what you did like when i just want to open / close the gate halfway by pressing the same button. I have a little knowledge on programming and electronics. I can learn the arduino by looking at many tutorials but it'll take me some time. I hope this will reach your attention. God bless and more good stuffs to share. Thanks, Sol

    I agree with you, you can't rotate it manually :) Power failure is not an issue, cause I have a backup 12V battery in the fuse box connected to that line. But if the motor fails, that gate won't open until I take it apart. I'd be happy to see somebody come up with an inexpensive design for that

    if there is enough travel in the spring tension mounts, then the backup option would be to stand on the box (looks sturdy enough) this would dis-engage the sprocket and allow the gate to be pushed freely.

  • @idiy8074

    @idiy8074

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well, you would have to step on it pretty hard, but it would do. There's enough travel on the springs to do that and it's definitely sturdy enough to stay intact. Great idea Andrew! For those who wan't a more professional device then stepping on it with your body weight :) could do a system with a lever where you can lower the hight of the entire motor to unlock it from the gate

    You can't open it. Motors reduction system is the one that's giving a lot of pull power to it. The same power stops you from pushing the gate open.

    +Stas S I can send you the code, but you will run into issues if you don't know how arduino works. And if you do know, aren't you better of writing your own code so it suits your needs? Because, the code for this is pretty basic.

    It would be easier to just mod a garage door opener to slide your gate back an forth. All the electronics plus the opener come with it, you would just have to mod it to use it for your purpose.

    Hello iDIY great video. have few simple questions, please answer is 12v stepper motor 60RPM a better choice ? what is the weight of the gate (in KG) ? motor torque/load nm / watt ? can i use 600watt drill machine motor ? if yes to above, any ready made h-bridge-driver you suggest ? L298A for example only suitable for few? i tried this with MQTT/Wi-Fi/tasmota-on-nodemcu/nodered.........but the car-power-window-motor gets super slow with L298A hbridge any help or suggestions. thanks in advance

    You can do it without a bridge just to see what motor would be good for you. I think if you would like some speed, a 24V windscreen wiper motor would be the best. Think buses, big rigs... Wiper motors are stronger and faster, that's why. And you can regulate the speed through the bridge, if you want to

    Weight of the gate, I guess, is around 400 lbs... Give or take Motor is 24V DC wiper motor, ~70 rpm and about 70 foot pounds of torque

    A 600W drill motor is designed for speed. So when you put some weight on it, it looses speed and power. You need a motor designed for torque. They are generally slower, but I doubt it that you need more then a 150 rpm

    About the bridge, not sure. Can't remember what I used. I'm assuming you mean L298n not "a". I drives up to 2A, which might be to weak for you. Depends on the weight of the gate. Throw some numbers at me, I'll give you a hand with the plans if you'd like
