DIY French Bulldog PVC Dog Wheelchair

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I made this video in 2014, 1 year after he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that attacked his spine. I decided to make a wheelchair so he could walk. After 5 attempts and test fits I made it work. So, I want to pay it forward and create my own video since all the videos on KZread helped me create a wheelchair for my french bulldog BUT none contained videos of the wheelchairs in use on the dog it was built for. Enjoy! UPDATE he walks now with the help of Sow Eden CBD. Inspiration came from @FrenchBulldogRescue

You don't know how much this benefited my pug. She had lost all use of her back legs so my husband followed your instructions and made her a wheelchair. It was wonderful. Fit her well and before we knew it, she learned to walk again. She went wherever she wanted and knew how to scoot around. THANK YOU!!! You are wonderful.

+James Fralic I made this same wheelchair for my dog the same day I commented. It cost more than $18 for the supplies. Probably about double with the cost of the wheels and the velco straps and the glue being the most expensive items. It took some tweaking to get the measurements correct for my medium size dog (60 lbs). I didn't glue any of the pieces so I could adjust lengths until I got it right. I was going to try to put a video together to show how I did it, but never got around to it.

Thank you very much for this video. I'm headed to the Home Depot tonight to build this for my 13 year old 30 pound beagle whom lost his mobility last week and has been dragging his back half around and is getting sores from this now. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your putting this together for all of us to learn from. Dr. Watson will be so pleased. If anybody is new to this, I can throw you a helpful hint regarding dragging themselves around the house. Simply get cheep t-shirt and put it on the dog when they are in the house and resting and not connected to the wheel chair. This will save on sores, infections and discomfort while they are not in mobility mode. PS. I agree with you MadeMan :P

To all who are asking, here are the measurements. Mark wrote them down in the comment section down below... You need 2 of each piece. As follows... drop bars to shoulder cross (2-1/4) mid side bars (3-1/8) rear side bars (5-3/4) front side bars (6-1/4) cross bars (7-1/2) wheel bars (9-1/4)

I LOVE this SO much!! We just found out our 3 1/5 year old Frenchie has IVDD with a deformed T-11. His immobility literally happened overnight. But as I have had time to ponder on how this happened, I actually saw the signs but didn't connect that it was abnormal or there was something wrong with his spine. I thought his occasional stumble was part of his gait or just clumsiness. I am SO sad that I didn't catch a clue for him sooner. :-(

Michelle, same here with our 4 yr. Dachshund. He had a incident last year that I didn’t register as IVDD. Who would at their age. Anyway, I have been going to a Vet who does Accupuncture, laser therapy and Chiropractic. We have kept him crated except for potty and lately walking to strengthen his muscle. IVDD is not something we would of recognized even though this was our second Dixie to have it. That said, the 1st was 14 when his happened. He bounced back from Accupuncture as well. 👍 Our 4 yr. old is coming back too. Just a bit slower. His back toes still are not responding which makes for a drunken sailor episode. I am going to make this wheelchair this to give him longer time out of the crate and hope. Today after our walk he seems depressed. So let’s make em wheels!!! 🦼🏍 🎉

Great video. I like this design because it's simple and lightweight. I'm making one for my 14 yr old lab. Using 3/4" pipe (my dog is an 80 lb lab). Got the same wheels in the vid. The correct bolt size is 1/2" x 3 1/2". As for padding the straps, I'll probably use seatbelt padding which you can get at Walmart or Auto Zone. All in, it should run about $65, vs. $350+ to buy one. Thanks to the orig poster and everyone else who offered suggestions.

I built one for my lab using the same design as in this vid. It wasn't as sturdy as I had hoped for, considering the weight of my dog. I needed to buy a harness and other parts to support my dog properly and it still wasn't ideal. To be honest, next time I'll just buy a pre-made wheelchair made out of metal, which is sturdier. I've seen some for under $200. PVC is okay for smaller/lighter dogs,

Hello A Marie I also have a Shih tzu that I need to make a wheel chair for. What is IVDD? The vet couldn't explain why his hind legs are not strong enough to walk on his own. Also did you change the height and length for your pup? I'm nervous to try this but it looks simple. I would love to hear your feed back!

Fellow shih tzu owner with a partially paralyzed doggie. 4 years ago 3 of her disks ruptured, she had surgery within a day and made a pretty good recovery but she's going on 9 now and seems to be less able to walk every day. Thinking this is the next step and would love to hear if a mobility device like this worked out for your dog.

Mark, thank you for the video. My dog just went to the vet this morning, he couldn't walk very well this morning and had no strength in his back legs. Long story short they said it'd be 600-800 bucks for a wheel chair. Good to see there is alternatives

I will add that to my dog's feet.

I agree with the other person; I don't believe his back legs should touch the ground. I notice he did not start out using his hind legs but eventually was making effort to. But if they are raised higher he will still be able to go through the motion of doing so but with out the need for them to touch the ground/floor. In the long run this would be best for him. Also I believe cushions should be provided especially for his private part. I can't really tell but it looks as if the strap is on it. Very nice video and I will building one for my baby.

Mark, thanks for responding; I did not expect you to since the post was a couple of months ago. I also was aware that the hips should be leveled. I am going to add the individual leg straps with cushion. I strongly feel and I hope you provide your pet with cushion and adjust his strap where his private part is sitting on; if you don't it will become raw and or irritated. Something as simple as a soft hand towel would be better than just the rough/hard Velcro straps. Also any dragging is not good rather "not much" are "very much", this is not acceptable. At least not for my boy.

I don't know if it's still going to help you but there are a few important measures to take: the lateral of your dog - (the beginning of the front legs to the 'end' of the back), the height - (the beginning of the back leg to the paw) and finally, the width - (with a rigid ruler, measure the hip of your dog). Those measurements are the basics for you to cut the pipe just right. I'm doing one for my German Shepard right now! Hope it helps! (:

Video says 12 pcs of 1/2" x 10' PVC pipe. I'm going to go ahead and say that's incorrect. Perhaps 12 pcs *made* from one piece of 10' pipe? WIsh I could see the measurements and for each piece you are using in assembly. :(

I think all you would have to do would make the height of the piece that holds the wheels just about one half to one inch higher. I want my baby's feet to touch for rehab because she had spine surgery and hope she will regain function but I am sure there are some furbabies that don't have that option

(our detailed shopping list below, thank you for the video Mark Lapid...Just bought everything for a total of $55 with our 10% state sales tax. However, someone on ebay is selling them custom fitted for dogs 20 lbs and less for $65 with shipping fyi. We were unable to find free lawn mower wheels that were not wider than we wanted or that were close by/on Craigs List: 'free stuff.' However our local Buy Nothing (city) Facebook group has connected me with someone who will let us borrow the adhesive and get free connectors and PVC pipe. However the two biggest costs are the velcro buckle straps and the lawn mower wheels so that's what you want to find a deal on. Anyone have any other sites for finding free giveaways? Homemade DIY PVC WHEELCHAIR for dogs with back leg challenges or paralysis 2 pieces each, (2-1/4 inches), (3-1/8 inches), (5-3/4 inches), (6-1/4 inches), (7-1/2 inches), & (9-1/4 inches) PVC pipe: 1 quantity of 10 foot ½ inch diameter schedule 40 durability PVC pipe. Allowed all the 12 cuts to smaller pieces above (they may charge for 'cuts' w/ their saw, typcially 50 cents). In order from video: Lawn Mower wheels: 2 quanitity (5 inch, all plastic no steel, about $6 each x 2 = $12 Nuts/Bolts for Axle:2 bolts but 4 nuts and 4 metal washers (the washers make it so how long the thread goes doesn't matter. When at the store make sure the nuts and bolts fit together as there are different levels of coarsness)(I do not have the size but bring the wheel and make sure it fits snug through the hole.or I imagine it would wobble if too loosely fitted) T Connectors: 4 quantity (used ½ inch diameter pvc connectors) L Connectors: 4 quantity (½ inch diameter) pvc pipe caps: 2 (prevent shoulder straps from coming off) Velcro straps w/ a BUCKLE 2 inches wide for tightening adjustments: sold to hold cables (not double backed velcro w/ no buckle) 2 packs for $6 each or one large pack for $14. Length needed unknown. Total $55 (person on Ebay sells for $65 but we could get it sooner if we made it. Our dog is a datsun terrier chihuahua dalmation mix that is longer so we may be adjusting the length. (no size was originally given for the connectors but it is based on whatever size (diameter) the pvc pipe is as it has to fit into it) My interpretation: 12 pieces of PVC pipes of varying size: 1/2" x 10' (this means ½ inch diameter by 10 feet long) (we think it was a mistake and he meant a 10 ft. long pvc pipe of 1/2 inch width). The PVC pieces: They are sets of 2 in 6 different lengths. The longest set of 2 have big holes in one end where the nuts and bolts and washers will go for the lawn mower wheels: drill needed or pay hardware store to drill out. 2 inch velcro pack (quantity 4)(said he got the kind for bundling cables/ext. cords) PVC cement: regular clear (Oatey is brand he had 8oz can which was $4 or ask to borrow on your local Buy Nothing (city) group on Facebook. How to cut pvc pipe: Hacksaw or hardware store will cut for free or charge. If not held tightly the pieces CAN break: we saw it and it was a professional: wear glasses and safety gloves and durable clothing. rubber mallet helpful, not required. Would a can work? Drilling 2 holes total drill: pre-drill pvc 1/2 inch from the bottom (per video for a french bulldog)(size of drilled out hole depends on the size of the bolt) In the video he doesn't show easily or tell you what length to use for each section of the chair. The longest pieces are used for: the part behind the rump. The second longest pieces are used for: connecting perpendicularly to the rump piece with the L connector on either side of the rump piece. The third longest pieces are used for: connecting by L connectors to the longest pieces that extend from the rump piece. The fourth longest pieces are used for: (we have not done yet) The fifth longest pieces are used for: (we have not done yet) The shortest pieces are used for: (We have not done yet). Fit before painting on adhesive so you know it fits the dog and functions before permanently gluing.
