So good of you to teach this using your mistake as an example. I make mistakes too. You shared yours, so I'd like to share this story with you (kind of short version): I smell sewage in my kitchen. I thought plumbing leak somewhere. I checked whole house - sink drains, p-traps, toilets. No leaks. I thought kitchen sink drain maybe, so I used baking soda and vinegar to clean drain, in case clog was forming. But odor still in kitchen, not in sink drain. I look outside to see if effluent was surfacing anywhere, including clean-out caps. I called town to come check lines, they said everything fine on their end. Advised me to call plumber. Can't afford plumber. I became afraid that maybe sewer lines under my house broke. My house is on a slab - the floor and the driveway would have to be jack-hammered up to replace lines. Tens of thousands of dollars. In desperation I started searching Google. "What causes sewage smell in kitchen". One of the answers was to check the drip tray under the refrigerator. Omg, that is the answer! Unfortunately I can't get to the drip tray - I suspect it is a bolt-in, not a slide-out. Fridge must be tipped to remove it. I cannot do that. I will pull the fridge away from wall and remove back panel. Hopefully tray is a slide-out. If not, bye-bye fridge. I should say that fridge is 24 yrs old, and has not worked properly in years. Freezer doesn't freeze, fridge compartment not cold enough. I just realized that fridge is not keeping my insulin cold enough. (That explains some things about my bad A1c results). I think it's time for new fridge. So much better than huge jack-hammered hole inside my house, and driveway removed. So that's the lesson. Remain calm. Determine true source of odor. Check everything you know how to do yourself. I'm telling you and everyone that refrigerators have drip pans, and they need to be cleaned out if they start to smell. Check owner's manual (can be found online if you lost original) to see how to remove, clean, and replace drip pan. Also, if you do call plumber and they say sewer lines must be replaced, insist that they prove to you that that is where the smell is coming from. You have that right. Watch them closely. Have a great Sunday, Tim!

Good lesson there! YES, every modern refrigerator have a drip pan under it. It is there to collect water drain down from your freezer during the "automatic defrosting" cycle. Supposedly, the water collected there will evaporate as the cooling fan running. And for some reason it collect more water than usual, your refrigerator is having issues. I think that you got your money worth out of a fridge after 20 years. Newer fridge run more efficient and cost you less in electricity in the long run. In my own experience, the cheapest and simplest fridge last the longest! I owned two of the cheapest GE fridges. One when I first got married 31 years ago and one now. They both lasted me more than 20 years. It is important to clean out the cooling fins which I did a video about it on my channel. A very easy task if you can move the fridge out from the wall.

@@MoBangFoYoBucks Thank you Tim! I am absolutely going to look up your video on cleaning the cooling fins! Thanks so much for that. Yes, I can pull the fridge from the wall, as long as I empty it first. I've done that several times over the years to vacuum from the back. I probably should have been doing that once or twice a year from the start. Last time I cleaned under there, several weeks ago, I used a fridge brush from the front. If the drip tray is a pull-out, perhaps I pushed some debris into the tray by accident. I can see how that would cause a problem, very much like a sink clog.
