Yes, you are right. Filter like this usualy using by fish seller. Because simple, and they change water twice a week. So, amonia always low in their tank. For hobbies, more effectief using bacteria House like scoria or bio ceramic ring.

Nitrates will only be removed by water changes, plants or unaerobic environment, but in this case this tank is aerobic because it uses air filtration or water movements. :)

To add to his idea you can run different types of filters. Run one for fine particles and run another for larger stuff

How is this a filter? There's no intake sucking all the debris into the said filter. Only a pump that's pumping fresh air in! I get the pebbles and cotton would be good if something was sucking debris into it.

Don't ya need to put some holes into the main container also for water flow? Bit confused about how this works.

I bought sponge filters at 3 for 5$ on Amazon so while this is a cool idea it doesn’t save much of any money unless it was made large scale with a large 2 liter bottle for a giant tank then I could see it cutting some cost
