DIY Fake Rock Background for Reptile Enclosure

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video I take you step by step through the creation of a fake rock back ground for reptile enclosures using expanding foam, tile grout and pond sealer. I have built many backgrounds using this process, its not to say its the only way or the absolute right way but I have found it to be durable and safe for my reptiles as well as providing my pets with an enriching and active environment for them to explore. I hope you find this tutorial useful and you enjoy creating an exciting background for your reptile as much as I do.
You Will Need:
A glass or wooden enclosure
Expanding foam
Foam board or polystyrene sheet if you choose
Liquid Nails or strong glue equivalent
Clear non toxic pond sealant
Tile Grout - colour of your choosing
Acrylic Paint
Sharp Knife for foam carving
Paint brush for grouting
Paint brush for acrylic painting
Paint scraper
Caulking gun for glue
Sand paper for sanding grout (optional)
Reptile safe disinfectant such as F10

    I'm unnecessarily judgemental-- it's my pitfall. When this video started I just sorta growled, thinking..."gawd another one of THESE videos" (these being horribly boring and useless). To my surprise, I totally sucked for this. Your video is SO useful for my beardies and you are INSANELY talented! You made me eat my own stupidity and judgemental attitude. Job well done! If anyone's building an enclosure and watching this for instruction & ideas like I did, I just want to mention to MAKE SURE you check with a temperature probe all the areas inside the tank especially the basking area. Going from a glass tank with a screen to a wooden box with the no barrier between the heat source and the reptile significantly changes the temp. I also noticed that the areas where I grouted get much hotter then where I didn't. Just make sure you've dialed in all the lighting before putting your reptile inside. Great video by the way!

    This is a couple years old so I'm hoping you'll see this, but I'm gonna get a Corn Snake soon. They like to climb and like a lot of stuff in their tanks. Would it be possible to put branches in the foam as it's drying? or put the plants/branches to where it won't move?? I'm not sure if it makes sense but I'm hoping it does. This is the best tutorial I've seen and I've been on youtube for hours!

  • @sarahclisby

    yep I think you can put branches into the foam, I would suggest if your using a wooden or similar enclosure screwing the branches directly into the viv and then spray foaming around to make sure they are completely secure. Alternatively go check out my jungle python enclosure video and take a look at the branches i have in there that i have secured to a flat stable square base so they stand up right like tree trunks, my snakes love climbing them but this way they are removable for cleaning, replacing and to make it easier to get your snake out by removing the branches first as i find my pythons tend to grab a hold of the branches if I am trying to take them out of the viv to clean it and if the branches are in there permanently it could make it difficult for you to access all areas of the viv

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sorry for the late reply, Im glad you enjoyed it. I got the foam board from my local hardware store Bunnings. Its called Insulation foam and it is stronger than styrofoam. Alternatively if you can't find a strong enough foam, when I made my Jungle pythons enclosure I mounted wooden shelves in first held up by metal brackets and then put styrofoam on the top to give the grout a surface to stick to and spray foamed underneath to round out the rock look. That way I knew the basking platforms would be strong enough to hold his weight

Although I just bought two more second hand enclosures to do up and didn't try to take the glass out until I got home. Turns out these ones were built without the glass being removable so if your thinking about buying an enclosure check the glass comes out first! Wayyy easier to build backgrounds with the glass out of the way

    Hi Sarah! Really appreciate the Aussie video, makes it a lot easier to know what to buy! We have a glass enclosure and was just wondering if you had ever done this in glass before? Does the foam/liquid nails hold to it? Are we potentially better off just putting up a layer of cardboard around the edges? Also, I've seen in other videos adding some sand in between the first and second layers of grout to give the surfaces more of a textured/grippy surface. Is this something you've tried as well? Thanks!

  • @sarahclisby

    @sarahclisby

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Max, I haven't tried a glass enclosure myself but Ive seen others do it and the foam seems to hold to it just the same. Check out the facebook group "DIY Custom Cages and Backgrounds" if you wanna find someone with first hand knowledge there are loads of people who have tried all different sorts of background processes. I haven't done the sand either as I find the grout on its own provides enough traction for my beardies, they can scale the walls and hold on vertically with no trouble but it depends on what species you plan to house, more traction with sand can't hurt but I will suggest you try to keep the flat surfaces like basking platforms as smooth as possible as I find when they poop on them the smoother the surface the easier to clean, it tends to cake in harder the rougher the surface. Good luck with your build!

    I am in the US and the sealant I have is clear, pet safe but iy is thick. I like the idea of the rocks having the sandy texture to aid in shedding. What are your thoughts on just sealing the very bottom?

  • @sarahclisby

    @sarahclisby

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would still seal the entire thing just as it makes a massive difference when it comes to being able to clean poop etc off the shelves and it will make the build last a lot longer. When your sealing you can sprinkle sand into it as it dries to give it a sandier texture and increase grip for your animal

    Hey Sarah, first off; amazing and informative video. Great work :D Looking at doing something similar for my big Boyds forrest dragons enclosure. Do you find the grout method holds firm when the reptile climbs on top/over it? They be climbing all over the wall and it'll be misted frequently so don't want it to chip off. Thanks in advance :)

  • @sarahclisby

    @sarahclisby

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Chris! I haven't noticed any chipping from the dragons climbing the walls. I do mist the enclosures occasionally but its once a week if that, before I went Bio with them I used to completely soak down the walls with F10 and water when cleaning and never noticed any damage from the water. If you're on Facebook there is a group called 'DIY Custom Cages and Backgrounds' which is a great resource to see other peoples solutions to backgrounds that are used in more humid environments. I know a lot of people use a cement type thing that would probably be stronger if boyds claws are more powerful than beardies but I haven't tried that method myself :)

    Thanks glad you enjoyed it, I haven't used turf but when I put fresh plants in my tanks I always think the greenery stands out nicely against all my different background colours so you can go light grey, dark grey, orangey tones, creamy tones, browns etc as long as its an earthy naturalistic colour it should all come together nicely, I tend to base the colour of my rocks off the colourings of the animal I will be housing in it so my jungle python has dark grey rock work to make his black and yellow markings stand out on display or my beardies have orangey/ red/ brown rock work to match their colouration so they can blend in a little and feel more secure

    Hey Sarah. Thank you so much for the video. I love that he is a rescue and how much you care for him! I have been wanting to build my own landscape for a while now but have been so worried about the sealant because obviously I do not want it to be toxic or damaging to my beardie. I know you suggested pond sealant, do you find that it works well? And is it silicone based? I was looking at aquarium sealant before seeing this video but read that silicone is not good for dragons.. so now I am so confused lol.

    Hey, this is the product description for the pond sealer I use, " Crommelins Pond Sealer Clear is a water based membrane for waterproofing ponds and water features where no joins or internal corners are evident. Being UV stable, Pond Sealer Clear is suitable for use both internally and externally and is safe for all aquatic life." So its water based not silicone based, I find it worked extremely well and I haven't had any toxicity issues with any of my animals and have been keeping them in sets ups like these for years. As long as you wash it all down once its dry and complete and the tank has a couple days to air out before housing your animal its fine. The oldest enclosure I have that I used it in is now 5 years old and is still holding up good as new with regular cleaning, scrubbing etc. I have used aquarium silicone on other products for sealing up fish tanks and can tell you it has very strong fumes and I also don't think it would apply in the same way as this pond sealer does as this is very watery and easy to do multiple coats with where as aquarium silicone is very thick and gluggy and I think if used in the same way as this video would ruin the look of your background. I have seen silicone used in bioactive builds where they apply the silicone directly onto the cured foam and then press dirt or peat coir into it to create naturalistic walls that plants can grow on but I have not tried that method myself so cannot advise on its merits. I hope this helps!

I also do a general scrub of the rocks every couple of weeks to keep the enclosures clean and hygienic and this doesn't impact the rocks if you've done a good job sealing with the pond sealant

    sorry this reply is so late, the rock backgrounds end up quiet heavy after the grout process so If I built on wooden board and then inserted it in the tank I would leave some bare board space in each corner and screw it into your tank to attach if a wooden enclosure, if glass Im not sure an impermanent attachment would hold the weight but like all things just experiment and see how it goes. Just make sure it is well tested over a couple days before putting your reptile in as Id hate for it to fall off and crush the animal

    I’m in Australia so we can’t keep exotic reptiles here but I just did a quick green anoles google and from what I can see of their husbandry requirements I don’t see why not, being a sub tropical species you might want to do a couple extra coats of pond sealant and maybe line the base with pond liner if the enclosure is going to be a bit more humid. If you have a look at my jungle python enclosure video that is a subtropical species and the enclosure is more aboreal which would suit anoles but obviously doesn’t need to be that large :)

    @sarahclisby

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@tiskky7385 No worries about all the questions, way easier that your an aussie so I can actually answer from what I know :) I use the Dunlop Flexible coloured grout 5kg from from Bunnings because its the cheapest I think that comes in varying colours and you definitely need at least the 5kg to cover an area similar size to this if not more (I can't remember if I had to get a second bag as I've done a few of these so usually have spare grout lying around) since you have to do it in 3-4 layers though you can always go back and get more for the final coat if you run out, I definitely wouldn't scrimp on the grout though as you apply is as its what gives your background strength and it can crack if you don't apply thick enough coats. I personally don't think the brand would matter as long as you fully seal the whole thing well at the end with the pond sealer nothing toxic should be able to come through. You can try using a hot glue gun but I think hot glue melts through foam, just do a little test first on some scrap foam and it it holds then your good to go and if not try the liquid nails which is only about $6.50 and I doubt you'll need more than one tube and you can get a caulking gun for it for $8.20
