I am a 78 year old ex painter from Mystery Bay NSW Australia and I think you did a very good job and saved a lot of money, And yes I think it looks better without the screens.

No screens and trim out all the windows with a wide trim to make them stand out. I would also majorly trim back the bushes as well to bring in more light. I freaking can't believe you did that by yourself.... totally impressive. Can't wait for the grand final reveal.

I definitely like it better without. That being said, you can also get 1/2 size screens (in a clear mesh), or get clear screen mesh and replace the black mesh you have. This way, you still have the option to open your windows. We have french style windows with the 1/2 size I mentioned.

Love the way it looks. You did an awesome job. So inspirational.

Hi Kelsey, can you answer a couple of questions, please? What are your thoughts on applying two coats: first rolling on a 60/40 water to lime solution and then a come back with a 50/50 solution with the fat masonry brush, with the goal of making an “antique” appearance? Before applying the second coat, do you spray the brick with water first?

Great job Kelsey! Your home looks terrific! I limewashed our ugly gray brick Dallas area ranch style house using a 2 parts water/1 part calcium formula. On my first wall, I tried wetting it as most recommend, but I found it made it harder to gauge evenness in my application, and the next day I realized I had to add more in some areas, so I just cleaned it with a stiff brush and did it dry. We love the cottage-y look now. I got the hang of it pretty quickly, using rollers and brushes. Definitely a lot of splatter, so you have to be sure to cover things. It's been a year and the most wind exposed (northern exposure) areas are getting a touch up but that's a breeze. Damp areas that tend to get algae were hard to clean 100% before the limewashing, so will require annual touch ups as well. Some bricks had a dark gray tint and that still peeks through on some bricks, and this adds nice vintage interest. For the chimney I'm thinking of painting it charcoal gray with masonry paint. It will add contrast, and since it is up high and gets the most beating from the weather, touch ups would be annoying, as well as more hazardous. Plus, we had our roof replaced right before I limewashed, using the trendy onyx shingles. Cheers, Kelsy! Best of luck with your channel!

It turned out so good! We have a double sided brick fireplace between the living room and kitchen. It's a monstrosity of bricks, I really despise it. Now after seeing how great your house turned out, I want to lime wash it away.

It definitely takes patience and energy but not a lot of money. I used 1.5 bags of lime. Each bag was about $10. I spent more on the coffee than the lime! 🤣🤣

Loving your channel. No screens is my vote.

I took all of my screens off and you improve light in your home by 40%. I googled it and for energy efficiency you should take screens off in the winter to allow more sun into your home and put them on in the summer to block but I like the look better without year round.

It definitely made it easier to spread the lime wash after I sprayed it. But I kept forgetting! Didn’t make a difference in the final look.

If you have a weedeater, you can take off the center and put a sawblade on it for the tough trim job's of tree limbs.

The coffee color has definitely stayed true. The lime wash has peeled in a few places but it doesn’t really bother me. I might need to touch up every 6 months or so but it doesn’t bother me.

Without screens and add shutters maybe in black 🤔 it looks amazing! I’m always impressed with the power of paint (or in this case limewash 😂)

Thanks! The mortar was cracked a little bit. repaired it before I like washed. The new mortar I used was darker so it made it super noticeable.

Kelsey, did you wet the surface when you applied the second coat, or can you just go over the first? It looks great!

I didn’t wet the brick again for the second coat of lime wash. I added a little bit more water and went right over the first coat.

That turned out really nice! I just bought some Romabio and did a test patch, it doesn't seem to be covering as well as they advertise. How many 4 gallonbuckets did your house take?

Thanks! Since I made my own lime wash, it’s hard to tell exactly how many gallons I needed. I used about 1.25 50 gallon bags of lime.

Thanks! I decided to do lime wash mainly because of price. BUT if I were to do it again, I might do paint because I wanted an opaque look (like paint) and it took me two coats of lime wash to do it painting by hand. I would get a paint sprayer and spray it. But that’s because I have a two story house so it was much harder. If you have a one story, it won’t be as big of a deal.

I saw what was coming a split second before the paint bucket tipped- love your reaction, my soul would have left my body Definitely without the screens! Have you had any issues with the limewash becoming splotchy after it rains? Ours becomes a bit more transparenty after it rains and stays that way until it dries out.

Only in a couple of spots where there’s runoff from a strong rain. The trees in the front yard keep the lime wash from getting saturated.

Do you have any concerns about power washing brick like that? What pressure were you using?

The top layer is peeling in a few places but I would totally do it again. It saved so much money!

Yes spray the brick then paint while still damp. I did two coats of limewash.

What color is the limewash? Would you say bright white or an off-white?

Somewhere in the middle? It’s not stark paper white but I was trying to get it as creamy as possible by adding the coffee. Ideally it would be a little more off white (like romabio limewash avorio) but it was worth it to me to use the diy version and save hundreds.

Hi. Your original formula was 3 parts water, 1 part coffee and 4 parts lime. Later you said you made it thinner to get into the mortar joints. What did your final formula end up being? And did it look worse than when it was thicker? Thank u

So I found it easier for the first coat to add just a little more water so it was a little runnier and easier to get into the mortar lines. This was mainly because my mortar lines are deep. You might not need to do that If you find it’s spreading well on your bricks. The second coat was what you listed above. I don’t think it looked any worse. Either way I still needed two coats to get the opaque look I wanted.

I didn’t think so but the Ramabio website says that you can spray theirs so maybe. Would have saved me a whole lot of time!

This is the lime I used for my diy mixture- www.lowes.com/pd/QUIKRETE-50-lb-Hydrated-Lime/3567274 It took two coats to get full coverage. I added the coffee because I wanted the house to be a little off white. Not completely stark white.

The coffee tinted the lime wash so it wasn’t so bright white. It has held up outside so far.

It’s supposed to bond with the brick and adhere better than paint. The rain hasn’t seemed to affect mine.

No it’s made from mixing lime (powder) and water. It’s supposed to adhere to the bricks better.

The bricks already looked very nice and didn't need this treatment imo. I have ugly dark red bricks on my house and would love it if they were light like yours.

I rhought when you do this dome brick color shows theough .to ke personally it looks like you just painted the house white .you know when you white wash wood it shows through yours didnt .but as long as you like it

Great work, but geez, I hate to say it, the before looked so much better, much more character, more original brick...And I tottally dislike brick. But mainly the red plain ones. If anything, I would surely get rid of the siding panels, like around the upper floor window, etc... and those black thick screens over the windows. They make clear screen mesh, like fishing wire. This video was very helpful for my project, as I have red brick, and Imma-gonna make it gray. Thank you!

That’s funny because if my brick had been red, I probably would have left it alone. I live in Texas and those screens are super helpful to keep the house cool in the summer and help with electric bills. I’ve updated them since this video and I think they look much better.

It attaches just like a regular window screen. Google solar screens and it will explain them better than I can.

Totally confused by this project. If the lime washed off so easily with a hose, won’t it also wash off when it rains?? 🤷‍♀️

I totally should have explained this in the video but completely forgot. The lime wash takes about five days to harden/bond with brick, stone, etc. This is why I was able to immediately hose it off the roof super easily after I spilled it but was having a hard time pressure washing it off at the end of the video. The spot where I was pressure washing had been on there for a couple of weeks so it was much harder to get off.

No worries- I’d be wondering the same thing. I am married but he doesn’t help with projects for a few reasons- mainly because I try to do most of my projects while he is at work and my kids are in school. Then my evenings are spent with family and cooking dinner, lessons, practices, etc
