DIY Elevated Chick Brooder | Complete Build

Although horse and cattle troughs will get the job done, we were looking for a cleaner more efficient way to raise our chicks while they're in the brooder stage. This DIY chick brooder has many benefits including an elevated stand for the chicks to be eye level and easier to monitor, cleaner environment for the chicks to walk around in, an automatic waterer and the (soon to be) automatic feeder. It's a no hassle, less mess design that we are loving so far! We got this idea from a channel we love to watch, Living Traditions Homestead, and had to try it out for ourselves. We hope if you are looking for a design that is similar that this video will help you to be able to build your own! Enjoy!

Oh my goodness, that’s exactly what I needed. I’m on the downside part of the hill lets’ say and I don’t like bending over. I have a rabbit cage I put on wooden horses which helps but this is exactly what I’m needing. By the way, glad you’re back, you always have great ideas. I’m saving this one and hoping I can find someone to come over and build me one. 😊 Will be getting my chicks in Mar/Apr. Love you kids, you do such great work and always have such great ideas. Miss the cooking parts too. 😊 The puppy is no longer a puppy I see. God bless, won’t miss a video! Really really missed you kids. If only you could see the smile on my face right now to finally see you back.

First of all, welcome back! Missed ya'll bunches... Secondly, a shallow Rubbermaid tote mounted in a wooden track makes an excellent "catch all" underneath, used them on our farm. Thirdly, a PVC system for a feeder works great too. A bucket above, like the waterer, with a toilet flange in the bottom, hooked up to a 3 or 4" pipe stopped 1/2" above a tray on the floor of the brooder will gravity feed when needed. I know, clear as mud, but you're a smart man, you get it. Love ya'll ❤

Good stuff! Couple suggestions for anyone using your template. 1) make the dimensions the same size as your hardware cloth so you don't have to cut and trim. 2) face your barrel bolt latches down, in case they unlatch they won't open accidentally 3) i have tried many watering cups but also found the ones you used and they have lasted for years with no problems. IMO they are the best.

So nice to see the both of you back on. For the coup, if the bolts are not latched correctly, they may fall down out of the upper clip. If they are turned around, the bolt may be more likely to fall into the clip and keep the door from falling open. That kind of coup will save your backs for sure.

I love this build! It can be adapted for so many different kinds of livestock. The only change I would make is flipping the latches around, so the center stem goes down and not up to lock it into place. Great job on the video. So glad to have you back. Hugs to Y'all Ü

Yes, we’re going to have to do that. We already experienced a shop full of loose chickies cause the latch came undone. 😬

Thanks for sharing. This is a great design that can potentially start a lot of chicks from it. The water cups could be a bit higher or even make it adjustable according to the height of the chicks. Usually we want them to be the same height as chick's back to avoid poop in the water. I tried all of the water device available, the one worked best for me was the horizontal chicken nipples. You never need to clean it. And it can save a lot of water compared with other chicken nipples.

BTW Jacob. We are going to Foam our Skid Steer Tires. Cant keep them inflated… constant flats. Our on-site tire guy tells us that foaming them adds weight and stability to the unit - aside from eliminating flats. Will keep you advised on this as to cost and outcome.

Thanks! And yes, I can see the foam being beneficial. The tires we have on ours are solid rubber. So very helpful in some rough terrain.
