DIY Edge Lit LED Sign: ECubMaker TOYDIY 4 IN 1 Review! (3D Printing, CNC + Laser Engraving, Arduino)

Let's be honest -- 2020 has been a bit of a dumpster fire. To commemorate these trying times before the next catastrophe potentially wipes out all of the human race, I decided to make an edge lit LED sign that, while not helping with the ongoing crises, at least makes us feel a little bit better about our current situation by giving it a cute face and some blinking lights!
ECubMaker sent me their TOYDIY 4IN1 machine to help me make this video. This 4-in-1 single and dual extrusion FDM 3D printer, CNC machine, and laser engraver is an awesome desktop tool for makers looking to gain a lot of manufacturing capability in a small space!

Cool build! I made some edge-lit signs using a laser cutter, and found that if I engraved the image on the back on the acrylic it looked better. I don't know if the same is true for mechanically engraved acrylic, but you can look at the back of your sign to decide.

Thanks! I will need to try this for my next round of signs!

Hey Alex, great video. I love how many maker tools you're using for projects like this. That 4 in 1 looks like it will be great for future projects. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much! The number of capabilities in the machine are quite impressive. In the future, I am planning to test it’s capabilities more and will try to make some custom PCBs.

In general I'm not a big fan of all in one machines of any kind. This one seems solid. Great video. I'm curious how many hotend swaps that PTFE tubes will last.

Thanks! Definitely enjoyed this machine and am liking the premium features that come standard! I will let you know about the PTFE tubes as soon as I need to swap them! 😄

Is the laser engraved QR code functional?

The engraved QR code is functional, but it’s a bit inconsistent on cork at this size due to the light/dark spots in the material. However I have frequently engraved QR codes into wood, and it works very well!

@@SuperMakeSomething thank you so much! This is the first I've heard about this particular machine. You made a great demonstration! How's the dual filament coming along after all this time? Those little rubber cleaners still holding up? I was wondering if I could print them in TPU if they need replacing with my main printer

Why would you use a Arduino for a simple led circuit ?! just make it simple an on/off switch for every color would get the job done

They are addressable RGB LEDs, which can change their color dynamically with a for loop. The color transitions are controlled by the Arduino and make the LEDs fade between red and orange to simulate a fire effect.
