Ugh, now I have to make these. lol. I swear, nothing beats a home-made prop. You just can't get that feeling from cookie-cutter props from the big haunt store. I love that you build things using commonly available products. You also have an easy speaking voice. This makes it very easy to understand what you're doing. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!!

@@StiltbeastStudios Yeah that's what I plan to do. It's amazing how well the bobble in a gentle breeze. I want to run some wire up to the heads to control LEDs and a speaker from my haunt controller. I plan to use a motion sensor to trigger them when someone walks by hahahahaha. I love scaring people.

Finishing my third dementor and happy to add the following tips. Hands: Don’t go anywhere near the fingers with a high temp glue gun. The glue will melt the backer rod fingers when you try to use it on the joints. Low temp gun worked better but still opted for black electrical tape on a few joints. Also, as I starting rolling the fingers I was surprised how long it was taking to create just one finger tip. As a result, I grabbed my heat gun and created a realistic finger tip in seconds. Dementor outfit: I found that adhesive spray and a glue gun worked better than just the spray. The outfit would occasionally separate until I reinforced with glue gun. Dementor head: This may be controversial but I wanted to add a little more pizzazz to my upcoming display and when I realized my dementor face didn’t turn out as nicely as Allen’s did I committed an act of heresy. That’s right, I bought masks on Amazon and love the Dementors even more now. Although, I suppose they are no longer Dementors now. It’s like a Dementor did the nasty with another monster and I now have their love child for my next Halloween display. I also made a few other changes that I cannot discuss because I want mine to be awesomely unique. Thanks for the fun project Allen!

The technique to make the hands alone is super valuable and adaptable (and inexpensive). Hands with this much character to them placed in the right spot add so much to a figure to make it more than a stiff lifeless mannequin/scarecrow. Thanks so much for sharing.

I used almost exactly this method and attached to to a backpack and created a 7' tall grim reaper. But I used the tube insulation as ribs. One arm was on a puppet post and the other was the actors hand. The hands were simple skeleton latex gloves. The skull head I put on a dowel that was attached to a hat so that when the actor inside turned his head the reaper skull would turn too. So the actor could reach out and articulate the arms and one being his could actually grab at people. The only difference is that I used a loose muslin draped over the rib cage so the actor could see through and painted the ribs white and other visible bones.

Very clever and super creative!!!! I could even see putting a strobe light underneath. And if there was some good wind it would be moving in all directions. Because they are elevated and have flexible movement I could even see ghosts with tombstones underneath or witches with a fire cauldron. I love that these are in the air. The Dementors however are pure genious. Thanks!!

Do you have a supplies list linked/written anywhere? I’m having trouble finding the weed blocker fabric at a not outrageous price 🙃 and just a written out list of the items used would be really helpful! Also, thank you. You’re helping me make my husbands dream of a Harry Potter Halloween come true.
Im afraid I dont have a list of materials, but you could make one fairly easily by watching the video and making a list of what I use, its more work but it also will help you understand why I used what I did and allow you to make substitutions confidently. I hope that's acceptable.
@Justsomedude81Ай бұрын
I added cut soda cans with tea light candles to reflect on the face of the tombstones, spray painted the outside black, and left the silver on the interior to reflect the light. It added pop to it. I also added glow in the dark, dry brush highlights on my version of dementors, and it made them stand out just a bit more with the face and hand features. Thanks for the videos, Alan. You truly inspire and teach. And im gonna "go make stuff"

Loved making mine. A few snafus - had some adhesive that didn't want to fully dry. I put mine out in mid-sept. Warm/hot late summer days bent the PVC so that they stopped floating. I inserted rebar into the PVC which was great - until the frosts of October came and made the PVC pipe brittle and ended up breaking. Thinking I will put some sort of highlights in the draped fabric, and maybe stronger spot lights this year, otherwise they disappear in the night. Changing the landscape fabric to a iridescent sheer makes for some cool ghosts.
@StiltbeastStudios
Жыл бұрын
yeah even tulle fabric over this makes some great ghosts. Also you can use thicker pvc to combat the sun bending- Im in TX so by the time it gets cold enough to get brittle Halloween is way over.

Question. Where do you find room to store all the cool props and masks you make? I used to love making my own props, masks and costumes, but I ran out of room to keep it all, and I found that things started getting wrecked and eaten by mice Mice freakin LOVE foam for their nests :(

@@StiltbeastStudios I have cats! I have 6 cats! LOL. And they are all good mousers, but here in southern Alberta Canada, the last few years have been extremely bad with the mouse population, and even all those cats can't keep up. I made my husband a costume of "the red pyramid (pyramid head) from silent hill, and I put 8 inches of foam board on his shoes to make him very tall. I found out the mice got into the bag where I kept them, and have eaten about 50% of the foam away. Time to call an exterminator I think. Thanks again for all your hard work and sharing your ideas with us. I love your imagination.

I normally don't do that. I think its easier if you are going to make one, that you watch the video through and write down what you need, then you have a really good idea of what can be substituted and such. if there is a list then not getting the right thing feels like a much bigger thing than it is. seeing how its used as you write it down allows you to insert materials you are familiar with or have on hand when they would work just as well. It would add a bunch of time to do a list for each video and I feel the organic list creation is the way to go. Sometimes I release lists and extra notes to patreon if they are available. Hopefully I can get AI to look at old videos and make materials lists in the future.

16 seconds into the video, and there's already a useful (brilliant!) tip. I never would have thought of a box support for the head. 2 minutes 45 seconds - Mr O & I are thinking of how we could use just the heads to make a creepy swamp beast pop-up for our witch's bog yard haunt. And when you rolled the backer rod in your hands to make the fingertips pointy, we both just looked at each other open-mouthed. Great video, great prop, and great inspiration!

Would you happen to know how these would hold up in stronger winds? Or how would you reinforce them more for heavier winds/storms??? TIA, love these!!!
@StiltbeastStudios
9 ай бұрын
There are two ways to reinforce these for heavier winds. This first school of thought is to actually reinforce them. Spray the fabric with Flex Seal so it has a thin rubber coating and is more durable and thicken up the pipe they are attached to so they sway less in the wind. The second school of thought is to us reinforce them. Instead of using landscape fabric, use tulle fabric. Yo’ll have to get more of it and punch it up more for it to show well but it is so loosely woven that air moves through it easier and it’s less affected by the wind.
@amyallen8423
9 ай бұрын
@@StiltbeastStudios thank you those are awesome ideas!! I was thinking if I use bed liner spray on the fabric to weather it and weight it down a bit but would probably have to have a thicker pipe of course to reinforce that. What do you think??

Ugh, now I have to make these. lol. I swear, nothing beats a home-made prop. You just can't get that feeling from cookie-cutter props from the big haunt store. I love that you build things using commonly available products. You also have an easy speaking voice. This makes it very easy to understand what you're doing.

Yeah, I just really wanted to show mine were hovering. They look good longer as well
I used almost exactly this method and attached to to a backpack and created a 7' tall grim reaper.

Thanks!!

Im afraid I dont have a list of materials, but you could make one fairly easily by watching the video and making a list of what I use, its more work but it also will help you understand why I used what I did and allow you to make substitutions confidently. I hope that's acceptable.

@StiltbeastStudios
Жыл бұрын
yeah even tulle fabric over this makes some great ghosts.

Would you happen to know how these would hold up in stronger winds? Or how would you reinforce them more for heavier winds/storms??? TIA, love these!!!
@StiltbeastStudios
@amyallen8423

@@StiltbeastStudios thank you those are awesome ideas!! I was thinking if I use bed liner spray on the fabric to weather it and weight it down a bit but would probably have to have a thicker pipe of course to reinforce that. What do you think??

Literally the only thing I would have done differently would be to either make the cloaks longer, or add some very thin black flowing material to give them more of that ghostly slow motion appearance that they have in the films.
