DIY Concrete WATERFALL Table || How to Make || GFRC
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This episode shows how to make a DIY modern concrete coffee table using white GFRC concrete mix and walnut lumber. This project involves intermediate concrete and woodworking skills, but I think with some patience, anyone can create this modern concrete coffee table. It would also be cool to see someone scale this design to dining table size.
If you haven’t worked with GFRC before, it might seem a bit intimidating; but it isn’t. It really isn’t a whole lot more difficult to work with than standard concrete, and the results that GFRC produces are amazing. The woodworking skills involved are more intermediate, basically because you have to use a vertical cutting jig on the table saw to make the aggressively angled walnut base for the coffee table.

This table arrived well packaged and on time. kzread.infoUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!
Love the look of the really extreme base with that angled waterfall! Nice job, Mike!

Thank you for explaining why you don't screed the GFRC because that question was definitely on my mind until now! Could you maybe use a length of smooth, rigid PVC pipe (I'm thinking 6" or wider), possibly wiped down with paste wax first? The rounded shape wouldn't get right into the corners on a waterfall form like this one, but it should avoid catching on the glass fibers like a square-edged screeding rail/plank. Even if it's not perfect it'd still cut down on the grinding (and inevitable dust-storm) at the end. Just an idea, curious to hear your thoughts :)
Very inspiring...

Really love this project. Do you think that you could inset dominos into the cement to use to attach the base?
@modustrial

Thanks Russell! I think that could work, as long as you applied some finish to the dominoes to waterproof them before pouring concrete around them.
Un abonné m'a fait découvrir tes vidéos, moi qui sait ce que que c'est, le travail que tu fais est juste impressionnant, bravo !!!
Hi from Argentina! I do love all your projects! I’m starting using a hopper gun for concrete proyects. I really want to know the correct combination between air flow, air pressure (from compressor), and air nozzle size (I have three sizes, 4,6, and 8 millimeters) in order to get the finest face coat. Here in Argentina we don’t have a lot of information available... Thank you in advance for your videos, and your advice. Gonzalo Molina, from Argentina
It looks awesome and i would love to make. I have the domino, but I am a little concern about the strength of that leg on a heavy weight
@modustrial

Thanks! I have stood on it and walked around... It's stronger than it looks. Unless you are planning to use it as a trampoline, you should be good to go 😀
Very nice! Do you think it would be possible to pour concrete into a mold made from alginate?
@modustrial
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Alginate.... To be honest, I have no idea. with any concrete form you basically are just trying to make it waterproof and smooth. If water gets in into the form, and/or if the shape of the form is such that the cured concrete prevents removal, you'll have issues. If you can address those issues, then anything can be a concrete mold.
i want one!
How many 45lb bags of GFRC concrete did you use? Your supply list is very helpful, but I never see a ratio list. Thank you!
Chicago!
What color pigment did you used for the mix? Excellent product
Beautiful design! How long would you estimate until the face coat is semi-dry (I'm wondering if you mix the second layer at the same time)? Can we have the same smooth effect if we apply the first coat with a brush? I'm a total beginner and want to follow your approach to make a couple of small outdoor concrete tables, but want to avoid renting/buying a spray paint gun.
@modustrial
5 жыл бұрын
Time for face coat to firm up varies a lot by temperature....at hot temperatures, 20-30 minutes....when colder, it can be 3 hours or so. I usually wait for it to be firm to touch but still moist, then mix the next layer.
@modustrial
5 жыл бұрын
If you have a flat surface (without the vertical like the waterfall on this one), you can get pretty good results just brushing in the face coat.

Really nice job fella. I noticed you rub the mold down with what looked like mineral spirits and that would strip the paste wax out I would have thought. Did you put the paste wax back? Or something else to make sure the concrete seperates from the mold? First video I have watched from you so sorry if yu already covered this, just direct me to the video.
@modustrial
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shaun! The paste wax is put down so that the excess silicone caulk is easy to remove. it isn't a huge deal to leave in the form during the pour, but it can result in a bit of uneven coloring on the surface of the concrete. concrete releases really easily from melamine without any kind of form release, so I usually just remove the paste wax once the excess caulk is removed

I used fishstone GFRC concrete mix for this one, so just the concrete mix, AR glass fibers, and water. (I made two face coat and two backer coat batches, which is why there are so many buckets.) Link in the description for the fish Stone mix. If you are curious to make your own gfrc mix, there is also a link to a recipe for doing that in the video description.

do you have to spray it the GFRC? Or can you just pour it?
@modustrial
4 жыл бұрын
For a table like this with large vertical surface you really need to spray it to get a decent surface. For something like a countertop, however, which is just a flat slab, you can pour and brush in a face coat and get pretty good results.

Metal- rebar to reinforce that concrete angle? Seems like it would crack and potentially break overtime?
@modustrial
4 жыл бұрын
Nope, none needed... Rebar would actually weaken it by splitting the concrete slab into two thinner halves. If you do a little research on GFRC you'll find it's flexural strength is far superior to normal concrete, so no rebar is necessary.

Thanks! That look is what I was going for, but it's intentionally deceptive. I'm able to stand on the table and walk around on it with no issue, which is certainly more abuse then it will ever get as a coffee table. 😀. The weight of the waterfall leg, and the fact it tapers to be narrower at the end with the walnut, keep it pretty darn stable.
I thought it was a dinner table
