Great job ol' friend, keep up the great work. I want to see your project completed just as bad as you do!

This CNC table has actually been completed now and I've got a tool head on it with three different tools: a disc cutter, a heat sealer for making seams in plastic films and a pen for plotting. Prototyping saucers is SO much easier now, and scaling them to different sizes is super simple. The machine can make perfect circles and the seam sealer produces very reliable seems due to the fact that it maintains an exact pressure and feed rate the whole time.

That's AWSEOME man! I can hardly wait till your huge saucer is complete and to see it fly high!

Starbuckin The new one is very streamlined, not all fat and blimpy looking like the one I had before. I took a 36" diameter one filled with helium out the other day, just the hull and nothing attached to it, and tossed it straight up into the air on edge. I swear that thing went up 200 feet before coming back down! I wasn't expecting that, it was just strange.

That IS interesting, the aerodynamics must be awesome, I always believed saucer was most aerodynamic feesable design for an aircraft, and the most versatile, except maybe for a sphere. You're flying with HELIUM NOW??? WOW! How can you afford that? That's why I stopped flying my blimp and totaly gave up on it. Now I'm a quadcopter pilot... :)

Starbuckin Well, I'm filling off a tank I had filled about seven years ago. The 36" saucer takes a very low volume of gas though, like 3 cubic feet. It only reduces the weight by 70g, so really it is not even necessary. It could be filled with air and still fly, just a little bit more energy is spent on hovering. The 60" diameter saucer takes about 10 cubic feet I think, so using helium on that one is probably worth the cost to shed 280g of weight. I saw your quadcopter videos-- looks like fun! The saucer should be able to beat quad copters on duration I think, especially if not hovering in one spot for long periods.

This machine is so great - I don’t have an Engineering/mechatronics background but I’m hoping with some guidance I might be able to build one myself. Do you think it’s possible? If so, would you be willing to talk to me about your process? Thanks!

were did you get your plans...or is this your own machine design.

It's my own design. I've never seen any fabric cutter CNC plans anywhere, so it must not be a very popular type of machine for hobbyists.
