For improved rigidity, you could fill in the empty spaces with insulating foam before you seal the back. It will still be super light, but less likely to buckle, especially if it gets wet. Also, instead of fully cutting out the "windows," you could just cut the upper edges and bend them back, so the front of the cardboard becomes the floor of the shelf. That will also increase the structural integrity. That said, the plaster and papier-mache may be rigid enough, I can't tell from looking at it.

I think it would hold shoes.. The last part looks like Plaster/Dry Wall Mud if thats the case, it would make this shelf strong enough for shoes, not boots or cowboy boots...

Great design. The only problem I have is trying to concentrate on the build. Could you get someone not so easy to look at for the DIY dads?? I had to watch the video 10 times before I remembered it was about the box. Thank you. You made a great video. I put it in my grandson's room. When he asked who taught me how to make it I showed him the video. His only comment was, "Cool, she's really pretty."
