DIY cardboard furniture with free IKEA-style instructions

Industrial designer Adrián Candela was overwhelmed by the packing waste stacked in his living room after a recent move and being in need of a nightstand and not wanting to spend any more money, he turned the old boxes into new furniture.
His Nit (Catalan for "night") nightstand is now 8 months old (it was a Christmas gift for his girlfriend) and it is still standing (it's even had water spilled on it). Inspired by how easy the process was to upcycle his corrugated fiberboard, Candela created a simple step-by-step assembly guide that he has made available for free online so that others too could turn their furniture waste into side tables.
All that is necessary are three 2.5 mm sheets of cardboard, a utility knife, a pencil, a triangle (optional), and a cutting board. You can download the plans for free from his website. Candela intentionally created them like those of IKEA because he wanted them to be easy to follow. Though he warns that until you’re comfortable with the design it may take a couple of hours to get the cuts right. Though once the cardboard is cut it takes just 2 to 3 minutes to assemble... and disassemble... and reassemble.
Candela’s creation was inspired by Austrian designer Victor Papanek and his book Nomadic Furniture. "Not everything has to be store-bought, you can make your own stuff,” argues Candela, “and what's nice about it, is you can custom-make your own stuff to fit your specific needs.”
Candela also thinks that cardboard shouldn’t only be viewed as cheap, but can be celebrated, within limits. “As long as you don't go overboard and have everything cardboard. I think a few pieces they've got a certain appeal to them… maybe one piece per room.”

Building your own furniture is not only cheaper to make and lots of fun but you can make it suit your needs better. When I built my own desk, for the first time, I truly felt comfortable working on my computer.

Tech tip: orient the fluting to run perpendicular to the force. Cardboard is much easier to bend with the fluting than against it. Many examples in this video are done the opposite way and would be an order of magnitude stronger if he turned some of the cardboard in the patterns 90°

This is fantastic! We need more brilliant thinkers like this that literally "think outside the box" as the suing goes. I believe if we have people to teach how to use the available resources in a different way such as this week accomplish so much more. Keep it up

Thanks for the book recommendation and this whole video! It was refreshing to hear you talk about money being tight, temporary options, and also your thinking on how to construct these things…My family just moved to an unfurnished home for the first time and all I have are these boxes. I’m really glad your video was the first I watched, it is such an inspiring starting point. I’m ready to start my journey into “nomadic furniture” ❤

I think this is a genius idea. Nothing wrong at all with re-purposing material into something useful that would have otherwise been thrown away and I like the design. Great job!! As of this comment, I'm currently exploring making recycled cardboard canvas from box panels and old magazines to make inexpensive wall art, and about the most expensive thing I've bought so far is the glue...... but glue is much cheaper than going out to buy a canvas, and the cardboard/paper I get pretty much for free since I already own it, and art options are limitless.

These ideas have an unsuspected market in older people who have to downsize. Kits for us would be a godsend for us in some circumstances. Some of us older people can't even do the cutting because of arthritis, loss of strength, etc. And we are on fixed income. It would be fabulous to have furniture we can easily move that still looks contemporary and elegant.

Kirsten, if you're ever in Austria, there's a company in Schrems called GEA that you might be interested in. They make minimalist but excellent-quality wooden furniture, and also mattresses out of all-natural materials which you can "test-sleep" on in their bed-and-breakfast addition to their workshop. The guest rooms all contain cardboard wardrobes, which are surprisingly sturdy and stable (they use more layers of cardboard than in this video though). Unfortunately they don't sell them...

If you want to improve on your project/future projects, pay attention to flute direction on corrugated cardboard. On diagonal pieces, you used weak direction, thus it's easy to bend and crease when bumping into it. Other way would be much stabler, stronger and leave a prettier edge

This is awesome. I read the Papanek books (there are several) when I was a kid. I also built a center console for an old car out of cardboard and covered it in fiberglass and it outlasted the car. Cardboard is a great prototyping material and if you want a bit more permanence you can paint it. Or if you want to keep the "Pop art", varnish it. My laptop stand is now made from wood but I prototyped with a cardboard box and razor knife in about 5 minutes.

I think if you made that night stand with two shear panels on the inside, like the wall stand, you might be able to sit on it. The only problem is, if you smash it, there goes a lot of work. That one made out of double wall cardboard looks like it might actually hold you. I've seen videos where furniture was MADE to sit on, using the same materials, and geometry. If it can hold a persons weight, it's legit.

as mulch. It goes in my paths & covered with old newspaper & grass clippings. As the plants get a little bigger I "mulch" around them too. I used to weed all by hand , but with 4 big gardens & being over 60 .. it hurts my hands to pull them all out. I do leave 'weeds' around the edge for the bugs. I usually go to the shampoo section of Walmart about 6am & get a couple buggies of small boxes. Now I'll have to look for the bigger boxes too. thank you for the ideas.

I love this!! I am hunting for ideas to make a liftable/moveable jigsaw puzzle table. Ideally i would like to be able to lift it and put it over a large chair, or freestanding. A dream come true would be to somehow make the table able to sort of fold up with the unfinished jigsaw in order to store it tidily away when not using. This would be a jigsaw table I can do throughout the day while I am working so that I can keep my brain happy and playful throughout the day for a few minutes each time. My office is not huge, which is why i want to make it lightweight and able to fold up.

You are brilliant. I love re-purposing things. Until just now, I only considered cardboard for artistic rather than useful purposes. I made a castle for a little girl when she was one year old out of a refrigerator box and a hot water heater box, I was working construction and just couldn't stand to keep cutting them up for recycling so I snuck a few home. It turned out great. Right now she is turning 3 and I want to make her a table and chairs. I found one great one for the table that involves a LOT of duct tape but it totally looks great, easy & sturdy. Looking now for ideas for the chairs and happened upon your video. Please tell me there Is there a link to the patterns so I don't have to trial and error all those notches since you clearly have already done that brain work for me. :) ?-pattern/measurements link-? :) Plz? :)

I love cardboard furniture, but 1. it's hard to find for sale 2. when you do find it, it is VERY EXPENSIVE [for cardboard] 3. it's not going to last long enuf to be worth the expense 4. it is next to impossible to find templates so you can make it cheaply yourself I think a book of templates would sell very well Also, i wonder why foam core does not seem to be used much. I think it may have some advantages over cardboard- 1. it's sturdier, i think 2. it cuts more easily and without the rough edges that you usually get with cardboard

I did this 4 years ago out of a DC shoe box, I needed an end table for my glasses and remote, I hot glued it together, it lasted quite a while and looked cool. I originally had an Idea to make a skateboard "kicker" ramp with a refrigerator box,the idea was to cut the profile of the ramp multiple times to achieve the width sandwiched together, and liquid nail those layers, and Masonite on the surface(1/8") glued. it would be super lite and cheap, but not something you could leave in the elements.

Its a cheap way of making temporary furniture like for a student apartment and if you plan on moving alot but you cant hide the fact that it still looks cheap, its good to reuse the cardboard I mean save the planet 👍 and Im all for that thats why I now making a carpet out of plasticbags(like the ones you get from the supermarket or other shops( just make sure they are clean) but Im also a realist those furniture will break much more easier then wooden or metal ones but it can suffice for the time being if you are short on cash and/or have plenty of leftover cardboard and want to lay your cash on something more fun then furniture.

This is a great idea! It would be fun to paint it crazy colors too! Just a warning to anyone picking up furniture that was thrown away - DO NOT pick up abandoned furniture. Bed bugs are an increasing problem everywhere, and might be the reason why the piece was thrown out. Even if there are no visible bugs on it, there could be unhatched tiny eggs on the furniture. Just don't risk it.

This is a very simple design and could be made to look really awesome. you could use any type material am thinking birch that is stained but if you do this out of a hard material will be a lot more work but if it can fold up into a small area it would be worth it. if you drive from place to place it could easily fit in a car and not take up much space. great idea

Everyone are all over traditional furniture making. But if you look at it sober, you can see that the tradition of furniture relies on oversized pieces that cover unoptimal layout, construction wise. To get subjectively more pleasing aesthetics. The cardboard furniture is the exact oposite. I like it! To be honest, as an engineer, some of the traditional furniture solutions make me cringe ;)
