DIY Campervan Kitchen Build Part 2 (with Drawers & Pull Out Pantry!) | Transit Van Conversion E33

It's time to finish off our very DIY campervan kitchen build by making all of the drawers, doors for the cupboards, and then painting everything to match our fridge cabinet. We just need the worktops now!
Our van kitchen is quite a custom design to fit the space in our van, but we managed to just about squeeze in an extra seat, and even a pull-out pantry which is probably the most intricate bit of wood-work we've done so far. Very happy with how it turned out 😄
This campervan kitchen build was one of the longest projects we've done so far, in large part because we were battling with the weather... we had sun, rain, wind, sub zero temperatures and snow... all while trying to spray paint which made it interesting! ❄️

    I'm currently designing van kitchenette. If you designed the oven to slide into corner area you had difficultly accessing.. it would create more room and even access to the cabin. Still an excellent job and I was going to use large timber struts instead of ply. I was anxious about the integrity of the units dislodging when traveling over humps (and common UK potholes 🙄) over time. Thanks for the posts, very clear and supportive tutorials

    Thank you, you're welcome :) We did think about having it in the corner but we really like having the worktop there. It's a big thing to place for sure, we can still get into the cab though through the hatch if we need to. We were a little concerned about that too but happy to say that over many miles and over lots of crazy Devon potholes our cabinets are still holding up really nice! 😁

  • @SelfBuiltStories

    Cheers :) We've only bought ourselves the ones specific to the van build, mostly all the electrical and plumbing bits and the common ones like the jigsaw and drill. We picked them up as we went along really, partly second hand, sometimes a Lidl special 😛 A few other really niche ones like the worktop jig we bought and then resold on eBay after we were done. And then we were very fortunate to be able to borrow most of the others, especially the heavy tools like the chop saw and table saw from Abi's dad, most of those acquired over the years from car boot sales. Definitely helps having the right tool, we started off with the basics and got more confident with others through the build 👍

    Hi guys, hope you are well and enjoying your travels 😊 I’m just rewatching this video for the umpteenth time trying to work out our cabinets 🙈 Please could you let me how thick your kitchen cupboard doors are and which hinges you used? Thanks again, we’d be lost without your videos 😂🙏

    Hey! All good thank you, and yeah it took us a lot of pondering to figure out what to do with our kitchen! Probably the most bespoke thing to build in the whole van 😀 We used 9mm birch ply for the doors and then added a thin band of 6mm for the frame effect on the outside so around the edges it ends up being 15mm. That is *just* enough depth (if you're careful!) to seat standard 35mm hinges. We went for these ones: www.wickes.co.uk/165-Degree-Soft-Close-Clip-On-Cabinet-Soft-Close-Hinge-Nickel-Plated-35mm---Pack-of-2/p/103293 . They worked great, we just had to figure out how much of a block spacer to mount them on so they fit correct. And you're welcome, glad they're useful! 👍

    Thank you ☺️ The weather for this one was particularly hard to work with, definitely makes the whole project a lot longer! Fortunately we have the heater in the van though so were able to make it a nice 25C drying room inside even when it was sub zero outside, so they actually dried really nice and quickly in there! The bigger problem was keeping ourselves warm while painting it all outside 😀 At one point our cordless drill wouldn't work because the battery was too cold 🙃❄️ Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too ☺️

    You're welcome, thanks for watching 🙂 And sure, we bought 2x 750ml tins of both the white and the pacific state blue kitchen cupboard paint (so 4 tins in total) , and that's been enough for us with still some left in the tins. We were spraying it so not sure if you'd need more (or less) if roller painting. We also put on a coat of white primer first and for that we pretty much always use Zinsser Bullseye 123, and we get that in the 1l tins and have used 2-3 for the whole build. HTH! 👍

    Cheers! And yeah good question, the manual specifies a required clearance of 2cm on each side of the cooker and the use of a non-combustible material. So when we made the cabinet we left the gap and when we come to do the gas install and actually fix the cooker in properly we're going to add a 0.5mm steel/aluminium sheet on the sides and bottom. We haven't done it yet as we're still constantly taking the oven and cabinet out to do bits of plumbing and stuff 😛

    Hi. Great videos. Thank you for sharing your journey. 1 question: Did you have to dilute the paint to get it to run through the sprayer?

  • @SelfBuiltStories

    @SelfBuiltStories

    Жыл бұрын

    Hiya, cheers! And yes we did, we had to do quite a bit of experimentation to get the right consistency actually. The first attempts we had were too thick and used too much paint and were clogging up. Other attempts were too watery and the paint was running everywhere. We got a feel for what was right with a bit of trial and error. One other thing we did was to strain any paint that wasn't brand new through some tights to remove any lumpy bits. After a bit of practice we found it worked really well and saved a lot of time, but we had to be really on top of making sure it was really well cleaned after using it, the paint was good, and we periodically cleaned out the nozzle if it was sitting idle for a while. HTH! 👍

    There were six lots of ad breaks in this sanding and painting special. I love you guys, but this is drawn out far beyond its' merit. This has stopped being quality content.

    Hmm that's frustrating thanks for the heads up 👍 This project ended up being one of the longest in working time of the whole build so far which we weren't expecting, lots to build and crazy weather! We like to include it and add cut scenes of the animals and garden to break it up as that's how we like to watch it back. Sorry one of the bits of music overpowered out the audio. We do spend a lot of time normalising the sound to try and keep the levels consistent and audible, will keep in mind to dip it down a little more when there's talking. Cheers for the feedback
