DIY Breeder Rack for BABY Snakes

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This breeder rack tutorial is a concept that can be adapted in a variety of ways but here is the rough idea.
Cut the 1/2" PVC Sheet Board into 16 pieces that are 20.5" x 16"
Deburr the edges with the deburring tool and use the Kreg Jig to drill pocket holes that are about 2.5" away from the the short sides and are perpendicular to the long sides of the board.
Lay one of your PVC Sheets on the ground and attach the pine boards to it. We have the larger boards in the back, flush with the edge of the shelves and the small boards attached towards the front leaving a 1" overhang for the front of the shelves. Make sure to brace the support boards using scrap wood/PVC so that they are the same distance at the top as they are on the bottom which will keep it from twisting or warping while you build the shelves in.
Use a prebuilt spacer like we have, or you can use two tubs with a thin piece of cardboard or sheet metal to create enough space to slide the tubs in without leaving space for a snake to escape.
Now you can just go through and attach the shelves at the right height starting at the bottom and working your way up with the spacer.
We attached heat tape in the back to our personal preference and covered it with an appropriately sized sheet of PVC.
Next we added a layer of poly insulation and attached a 1000 lb. furniture dolly to the bottom. This helps it to be able to roll freely and keeps it off of the cold concrete. As a final touch we added spray foam to insulate the bottom even further.
All in all this cost us around $250 excluding the 45, 30 or 15 Vision or Freedom Breeder Tubs (depending on the sizes you choose).
Supplies we used:
1000 lb. Furniture Dolly
2 PVC Sheet Boards: 1/2 in. 4x8 ft.
Pine Boards
2 @ 1 in. x 3 in. x 6 ft.
2 @ 1 in. x 4 in. x 6 ft.
Poly Insulation 4 ft. x 8 ft.
Kreg Jig
Kreg 1 in. x 1/4 in. Coarse Pocket Screws
Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks 16 oz.
Deburring Tool

is 3/8" PVC sufficient for the shelves? Thats all Lowes or HD has as of now locally. Thanks, great video!

Nice job, anyone know where to get PVC board in California, the stuff impossible to find around here nobody seems to even know what I'm talking about when I ask it's kind of weird.

Hey Garret was wondering if you work with Ternate Island locality retics? If not there's one up on morph market supposedly 100% pure f1 from wc parents. Would be interested on your input have not heard of this locality before.

They are not from these Dwarf and SD islands we work with, and no, we don't work with them. There's only one guy breeding them thus far, and as far as I know the only folks selling them are Rodney Boalich and Andrew Acevedo (if you buy from either of those guys you can be sure you are getting a pure one- both of those guys take pure locality bloodlines very seriously). They are a gorgeous locality if you get a nice example of one- but for me the jury is out as to whether they should be considered Dwarf or SD. They are Ternate Island retics, which is more specific than the marketing terms "Dwarf or Super Dwarf". Totally from a different region and type (likely a completely different subspecies than the SD stuff), so it would be a bit confusing to lump them into SDs or Dwarves- but that's my opinion. ;)

Using back heat doesn’t that make where the snake don’t have a hot spot? I’m asking because I’m gonna build my first rack and want to no which is better bottom heat or back heat? It just seems back heat won’t really warm up the tubs good and the snake won’t have a hot spot to be able to digest food properly,

Back heat provides a more mellow gradient. Belly heat creates more intense hot spots. Depends what you are after. ;)

Oh, and belly heat will kill your snakes if the thermostat fails.

I think i'd be inclined to turn it over for more strength with the screws on the bottom. He's building at 4 in the morning??? That's what his watch says. Been there done that!

If you do, they’re exposed to the snakes. ;)

Don't see why that's a problem. It's just a little cavity, not a hole to anywhere.

  • @keithfaulkner6319

It is probably not a real strength problem on this small rack anyway. I was just thinking in general.
