DIY bread slicer

Didn't want to spend money on an expensive bread slicer, or buy a cheap plastic one-so, after watching a few videos, I decided to copy this one! It cost me six dollars (I already had the cutting board). I hope this helps all my fellow bread machine connoisseurs!

I thought you might enjoy knowing that your video is still helping breadmakers years later! I bought a bamboo cutting board from Walmart for about four dollars, and found a second smaller one at Dollar Tree. I put my bread on the large cutting board to figure out size, then had a friend cut the smaller board into pieces, which I then glued on with simple school glue. Perfect for me! I only did one side, and it makes thin slices, which are the ones hardest to cut. without a guide, and my preferred size. Thank you so much for inspiring me to make one of these. Other slicers were either too expensive or just didn't work well.

Here 's a tip for bread machine users: After the final punch down -- you may have to do some research or experimentation to find the timing on your machine -- gently remove the dough from the bread machine basket, remove the paddle, do a quick spray of nonstick oil to the post the paddle attaches to, and gently return the dough to the basket right on top of the post to finish baking. This way there's much less damage to the bottom of the bread. You're welcome. :-)

After seeing this I suppose I will shelve my idea of having two dozen hacksaw blades mounted in a frame; reciprocated, and lowered using acme threads on a gear driven system repurposed from an old differential driven by a spare Briggs & Stratton 3.5 HP lawnmower engine. :| Just kidding! Clever idea. Control of the downward pressure (keep the bread from moving as opposed to compressing it) and 'sawing' with more, gentle strokes produces ever more perfect slices ;)

Thanks for posting this! It's a wonderful idea. I just made one yesterday, using a bamboo cutting board (7 3/4 inch width) and standard 5/8 inch poplar dowels. Thanks for making this video. I saw it several years ago, then spent the last 2 years looking for it, finally found it again. Can't wait to get it done. A couple of hints for home bakers, several people have mentioned you don't have to bake the bread in the machine, you can take it out and shape it however you want and bake it in your oven, no weird shapes or holes. My second tip is a game changer! I was reluctant to bake bread because it's really only fresh that first day without whatever preservatives they put in there at the bakery. But there's a little known technique, Tangzhong, that makes your homemade baked goods taste practically fresh baked as long as it will last! (And cinnamon rolls! Who wants to go to all the trouble of making cinnamon rolls if the second morning they're hard and dry? You can do cinnamon rolls in the machine also, just take the dough out after the first rise, shape and finish in oven) The Tangzhong method only adds about 5 minutes and it's so worth the extra effort. Google it, it's all over the internet. Try it, you'll thank me for it, you're welcome, think of it as return favor for the bread slicer!

Dear Keylargo, This is brilliant! So simple it takes a genius! I bake my bread in a 3 quart cast iron pot which produces a boule 7 3/4 inches in diameter and 4 1/2 inches high. Try and find a bread slicer to fit that, of any quality. How much time I wasted looking. Then I came across this video and I built a slicer like yours from scrap wood in about an hour and it's all I'l ever need. Well, I still have to put suction cups on the bottom but once I do it'll be perfect. Thank you so much. You should patent this. Design one that's adjustable for width and depth with a horizontal slot for the knife to keep the blade aligned throughout the cut. Wouldn't be hard to do. Thank you so much. I was almost to the point of giving up baking bread because I couldn't figure out a way to produce uniform slices. You have solved the problem. Kudos!

Also, chef FYI here and a really good tip for using cutting boards in general: Wet a clean dishcloth that is larger than the cutting board and place it on the counter beneath the board. This will prevent the cutting board from sliding while you are cutting.

Great idea, will have to try it. One little hint for you: You can remove your loaf from the bread pan after its kneading is complete but before it goes into the second rise, take out the kneading paddles, and use a little fat of some kind to grease the spindles that hold the paddles. Then replace your dough into the pan and continue the process. This will eliminate the weird hole in the bottom, all except for the little round one.

So they have this machine that apparently went out of production called the "slice a slice." The thing basically cuts a single slice of bread in half which is great for people on diets or perhaps diabetics as you get 2 thin slices of bread for every normal slice and that's good enough to make a sandwich or a burger or whatever you want with half the carbs! This thing is no longer in production but some company made a new one called "the nicer slicer" Problem is that those things sell for about 75 dollars without shipping or tax! seems steep just to cut a slice of bread in half. So after watching this i wonder if you make it with a thin side, if it would work for slicing a slice in half. It would be great for dieters. Since people on Keto diets and similar diets can't eat much in the way of carbs. This allows you to eat an entire sandwich with just the small carb profile of a single slice of bread. And a loaf of bread will probably last forever if you got 2 slices for every 1.

  • @KeylargoVideo

Great question! As you slice along the guide, you tilt the knife up ever so slightly just enough to keep the serrated edge off the wood. It still gives you a very clean cut. Meaning that it cuts the bread, not the board. I’ve had this board for six years now and it still looks like the day I made it. Thanks for your comment!

I would assume you would need to start by cutting one end free hand and then fitting it into the cutting board long- ways. I think this thing will work with just about any hunk of bread you can fit into it. Thanks for the compliment!! I need to clarify that I copied someone else's design for my own use (don't want them to think I stole the idea) :)

Maria W Thank you for your comment, Maria. Honestly, you can use any cutting board you have on hand. . I would take a loaf of bread and match it with a cutting board of same or similar size. The width of my cutting board inside the blocks was 5 1/4 inches. Just put a loaf of bread on your cutting board and figure out how big the blocks would be to surrounded on three sides so the bread fits inside. Then just go to your local store that sells lumber and ask them to cut blocks.Glue them down with food grade glue and you’re done! Good luck!

The length depends on the size of your board. I used a cutting board. Cut your pieces to the length and breadth of your cutting Board. The depth for slicing that I used was 5/8 inch for regular slices of bread and 1 inch for thick. You can actually make the slicer as deep or shallow as you like. Thanks for your comment! Good luck.

My question is what are the dimensions considered as universal for bread? Is it 5 inches or 4 1/2 inches? I need this measurement to gauge the proper width to allow the guides to be open to place my bread on the cutting board. Thank you for any ideas.

I like your creativity and need to go after this project. My only caution is the manner of cutting is not that safe as the blade of the knife can come in contact with the wrist or palm of the hand holding the bread in place. That's just some safety advice.

Great diy however I think you should be cutting towards the backstop instead of away from it. If you’re not using it to stop the bread from sliding away, then it could just be omitted.
