In this video, convert the old, Ni-Cd battery of the old BOSCH drill to the lithium battery using 18650 cells from a laptop battery.
If you want something profi, buy high drain cells with max discharge current 35A, for electric toys.
For the protection of the 18650 cells, use a 3-cell Li-ion Lithium Battery Recharge 20-25A Protection Board PCB.
Over chaege protection 12,2v
Over discharge protection 6,9v

Nice Job. To how much Voltage does the original 7,2-12V charger, charge up the batteries? The 4A BMS is probably way too small but I see the problem with limited space.

What about the charger, it's meant for for Nicads, don't you have to modify that for Lithium ion batteries as well?

@@captainjim1010 Two years later, but allright haha. From what I understand it won't damage the batteries as long as the total capacity of the batteries is more than the voltage used in the standard batteries. It will charge up until target voltage is reached and will not use 100% of the batteries but also won't damage them

    Why use 6 batteries when you only need 12V? 6 x 3.6= 21.6V won't burn the machine?

You have used 3 Li ion cells in series giving 12 V while the rated voltage for the drill is 9.6 V this may result in burning the drill motor

  • @CMCdiy

Do not burn because the volts you give in addition (between 9.6v and 12v are 2.4v) represent 25% above normal operating current. In your case between 4,8v and 8v (which they give two cells in series) ie 4v in addition, it is about 65% over, and you can burn the motor drill. In your case, you'd better try with one cell kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWeCu5dyo7qae7Q.html ,or change old ni-cd with new ones

9.6V is nominal voltage for 8 Ni-Cd's or Ni-Mh as is 11.1V for 3 Li-Ion 18650's. The brushed motor can handle the little higher voltage, no problem.

How are you going to charge the batteries fully? The charger only charges up to 11,2V and not the 12,6 you need to charge 3S pack fully. At 3,7V per cell they are only chaged about 75%

Hi! The bosch charger is 12v . Without the BMS 18650 Charger Protection Board, the 18650 battery can explode. The bosch charger can also give a higher voltage. You have to be carefully! See this image:ibb.co/mvOm25

The Bosch Charger is designed to charge 8S NiCd cells. One Cell has typically 1,2V. 8 x 1,2V=9,6V But the charging voltage is a little over 12V. So 12V :8 = about 1,5V each cell. 3S Lithium can be charged with up to 12,6V. So if the Bosch Charger does exactly 12V, the each lithium cell would be charged with 4V. But usually it's a little more than 12V. BMS with overcharge protection is necessary.

In my experience with PSR 7,2 battery, converting form 4Amp NiCad to Lit-Ion. The problem is the protect circuit. I bought some protect board from ebay. The 1st one work great and the seller said that was for modify 7.2v cordless tools and work perfect with PSR charger, it cost me $10. Even sometime failed to start the motor after 50% capacity. But it's ok because I have dozen of laptop battery for free. It's start failed after a year use, the controller cannot charge battery balance. I replace with 5Amp, 7Amp and 10Amp new protect board but never work like the 1st one that I was buy, 2 of them make my charger very hot. And Unfortunately I cannot found the 1st seller on ebay. So this week I replace the Lit-Ion battery with 12 x 1.2V 800mAh AA NiCad taken from my kid toys. I got 7.2V 1500mAh, but need modification with the battery pack case to fit all 12 AA battery to the case. IAll 12 Batttery cost me around $10, and work fine. I plan to replace with 7.2V 3000mAh RC toys battery that I was found on banggood.com last night.

Your problem is the use of laptop cells, not the bms. The voltage of laptop cells drops significantly under load. You need high drain cells who can deliver +20A continuous for 7.2-12V power tools and +15A continuous for 14.4V and up.

the BMS drops the current, but the motor needs more, I tried in the past and when I keep the mandrel to close the current exceed the 20A capability of my instruments, is 200W for a couple of seconds, the battery must be of hi current models, for charging 2 A is sufficient, or the regulator in the power supply will heat excessively :)
