DIY Belt Grinder
In this project, we made a small belt grinder (belt sander). For that, we used an old 1.5 hp electric motor (we recommend a 2 HP motor or higher), a 70x5 cm belt sander, some off-the-shelf bearings, and a few metal pieces.
We used Autodesk Inventor to create the 3D model and the drawings. You can modify the design to suit your needs.
We share the PDF drawings and Inventor files here and hope they will be useful for you and your workshop.

Hi Steven, you would be able to download them from the links in description. Please let me know if you have any issues. More than happy to help 😊
I wanted to thank this gentleman for putting up a free PDF, I respect that and thank you. A fan from France
ive been looking for a simple tension / tracing design for ages ,with a little modification this will be perfect thank you
That's a great project. Your use of heavy steel plate in its construction will add to its accuracy, rigidity, and longevity.
Great millwork! Especially for not using a mill! Great job on repurposing a motor.
Love it..❤ Kinda simple, without much meterials. I'm gonna copy exactly as you did. Thank you for sharing.
I made a similar grinder out of 6 and 20mm plywood using only a desktop CNC machine, screws and glue. There is only one polished stainless steel plate in the entire machine. The machine has been working great for 2 years now.
Brilliant work and thanks for sharing your schematics in the video.

Simple and easy and best . And yes thanks for your free plans .

WoW. I created one, along these lines a few years ago. 2 x 42 inch one. Used a skateboard wheel ( with bearings ) as the top tracking. I put a slight convex curve in the face ( as it turned on a fast drill - with file ) to keep belt centred. As well, did the same for the 5.5 inch 2 pieces of 1 inch plywood, glued / screwed together, for the motor drive. Same convex curve, too. I used a 2 inch half-moon, round wood rasp, for the tracking on the skateboard wheel, on a welded - on shaft. VERY GOOD grip, to adjust it. Motor - 1 hp 3450 rpm. So, using the 2 inch tracking wheel, the belt probly goes over 5500 rpm. TAKES OFF metal really fast, using 80 grit belt. Anyway.....good luck, all. (salvaged magnets, from microwaves to catch the filings, on the bottom) THE world, is full of creative / inventive persons. BE / WORK / PLAY ENJOY LIFE SAFELY - wear a toque over your ears, ear protection, eye protection, steel toed boots, maybe a leather smock, when welding / grinding in shop. I've burnt enuff holes in clothes........so have you. Take care, Mr Xformer.......thanks, for the on-going education, for those whose MINDS are open, to NEW IDEAS.
Great project!! Thank you for sharing. I think I might try to build one too!!

Awesome, we would love to see your results 👍
You did great work with what you have. I believe a Bridgeport would be all you need. Any special attachments I think you would have no problems making. Headstock and tailstock for o.d. grinding ,a magnetic table for surface grinding and an indexer for squares ,spirals or flutes. I think you could do it. I would try it but I don't have any room or machines,
Valeu o desempenho,ficou ótimo 👏👏👏🇧🇷
Very good, thank you for sharing your knowledge and design. Only this time I found a design image.

Great build but at17:34 when the wheel was turned it looked like it had a slight variance in height by about a 1 1/32 of an inch. Also plans please I wouldn't mind trying to build this
This vid is really great, i do miss some details that keep me wondering how to copy that ? The main wheel ... what is its exact size and the French dude said: A bigger wheel will cost you torque. Did you change the size of the first wheel ? And what size was the second wheel and what size did you adapt it to ? How do you know that your machine runs at 1500 rpm ? What is the size of those bearings you use for the guide roller ? How many kilos does your machine weight ? How would someone adjust the speed to prevent the belt will melt ? Or that is stops because it is not strong enough ? What program is used to makje the design blueprint ? How many lanquages do you speak ? I am still fighting the main base plate i am trying to make the perfect metal mall to cut future plates with the plasma cutter.
Nice job !!! Alow you to easy upgrade if u need longer belts …only by adding an arm on the plate …with an roller at the other end 🙏🙏🙏

Very nice work. Thank you share the plans. Pretty applicable. Can we use 686x50 belt sander. It is difficult to find 700x50 belt sander.
Nice job
A good and necessary machine.

What's the diameter and thickness of the wood? I didn't see that in the plans.
Oh the irony. There were so many parts he fabricated for this belt grinder that could have been made so much more easily and quicker if only he'd had ....... Erm.......... a belt grinder. :D
Thank you

Hmm. Not crazy about the music. Also, your "wheels" should have a crown rather than being flat, as it will improve tracking. Other than that, cool build. And very nice to share your plans!
