DIY Aquarium Overhead Sump Filter

DIY Aquarium Overhead Sump Filter Build:
Overhead sump filter is an easy to build DIY project that you can do at home. It is cheap, there is no need of drilling through aquarium glass for connecting overflow system and no powerful aquarium pump is required to pump water back to the fish tank. In this video, i will show you how i have built an 8.5 liter aquarium top filter.
Requirements:
1. Container or a planter: (i spent $15 for tools tray)
2. Aquarium pump: (i paid $19 for 200L/h pump bought on ebay)
3. Selley's silicone: I already had it at home (otherwise $13 if you don't have any)
4. Bio Media: $18 a kilogram for bio bakki balls and $10 for ceramic noodles 500 gram
5. Mechanical Filtration: I used some i already had at home (otherwise $5 app)
6. Clear Vinyl hose: $5
6. Electric drill with paddle bits
Total Cost: $85, if you do not have any of the above material apart from drill and bits.
Measurement of tools tray is 60 cm x 15 cm x 12 cm (L x W x H). I drill holes for the outlet at 9 cm height, which gives me just above 8 liter water capacity and also provide enough space to add 3 kg of submerged bio media. According to Pond Guru's calculation, normally stocked aquarium requires 1 kg bio media per 100 Liter. In my case, i will have more than enough bio media in my filter. It is important to calculate the capacity of filter box before drilling any holes.
Mechanical Filtration: I have used coarse, medium and fine foam and have allocated 2 compartments of the tray for this purpose.
Biological Filtration: I have used H2 Pro Glass noodles and bio bakki balls

    If you use pumice you can forgo using the ceramic rings ( which serve no real purpose except for settling muck at the bottom of a canister filter ) And the cheap bio-balls which have very little actually surface area for beneficial bacteria. Pumice unlike the yellow bio-ball will support both types of beneficial bacteria giving your aquarium full cycle filtration when combined with the three filter sponges you chosen. I hope this info helps.

    Just a little tip, when PongGuru says that X kilograms of bio media will filter Y liters of water, he's talking specifically about the BioHome Ultimate media. All type of media has a different amount of surface area and the surface area is where you grow your beneficial bacteria. Not trying to say you don't have enough, if that amount of media is worker for ya (which it probably should) then you're good to go. I'm just pointing out that that kg/L of bio media will change depending on what type of media you use.

    I like your idea,however maybe try using bulkheads on intake and return of your diy sump( it'll keep hoses from leaking)also be careful when using mr.clean scrubbies. They should read aquarium safe on package. Some of those have chemicals sprayed on them to prevent mold and mildew, in turn will kill your fish bro,.. I do like the idea of the multiple compartment sump. I'm in process of trying to build a hob sump around 24in. long by maybe 12in. deep for my 48in. X24x24 in. aquarium hoping it turns out ok working with acrylic.. Thx for sharing,..✌🏼..

    You can make it even better by making it a 'dry' filter instead. Put a tube on top of the filter with many small holes spraying the water over the filter medium. Also drill many small holes in bottom of the box and let the water drip straight into the aquarium. In case of a power-out or a pump malfunction the filter drains completely, which prevents anaerobic conditions, so you do not risk dangerously toxic ammonia or nitrite levels when the pump restarts.

  • @Fishaholic

    I have uploaded another video on filter that doesn't hold any water. Water is sprayed through a pvc pipe with smalls holes and it sits on top of filter. And I agree it is more efficient. Thank you for valuable comment and appreciate your time watching this video.

    I’m so confused. People actually say , let the media stay submerged when there is a power outage. So what do you mean by draining filter to prevent anaerobic conditions ?

  • @Fishaholic

    @Fishaholic

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey mate, don't worry too much about it. Power outage will always do some kind of damage. All my tanks have either internal filter or overhead sump that can hold water. In my opinion we are better off with filters that can hold water. Wet and Dry filter is something else which has its own pros and cons.

    Maybe you don't have a plumbing store where you live, there are far better ways to attach your lines to the sump box. They sell barbed fittings on one end and npt threads on the other. Use a rubber washer and nut on the inside then simply use a hose clamp to secure the hose. Fitting won't cost more than a couple bucks and seal much better than globs of Silicone. I would also change the sponges to vertical, it works best this way. You can also place heaters in there as well. Take care. Later

    It will be great for an overstocked guppy tank if you connect a sponge filter to the power head so it doesn't suck guppies or fry. Overhead sump filter will provide more space for bio media than a canister filter and cheap to build 😀

    Usually when they are 3 weeks old or slightly over, males will show some color. That's how you can determine which one are males.

    Hi, can you please explain why you fitted 2 outlet pipes ? And is you tank marine or fresh water ?

  • @Fishaholic

    @Fishaholic

    5 жыл бұрын

    It is a fresh water tank and i added 2 outlets for evenly distributing clean water from the filter. Outlet 1: water is distributed at top level which will also create disturbance and oxygenate the tank. Outlet 2: clean water moves to the bottom of the tank.

  • @Fishaholic

    Hi mate, just wanna ask some more questions to have a better understanding of how your top filter setup is. Are the bubbles only at the surface level of water or are they on the glass of the tank. Is water level in the tank too low compare to the outlet hose? Does the outlet suck some air when the water returns to the tank.

    Hey mate, I don't see any issue with bubbles on the surface level of water as the disturbance oxygenates the tank. If it is a concern then lower your outflow so it is submerged in the tank.

    Hi Vicky, 500 LPH would do a good job. You can go for 800LPH if your fish doesn't mind high flow rate. Check the height powerhead can lift water up, to ensure its not losing any flowrate.
