I've successfully used a basic variation of this with clear plastic containers like the one pictured on the left at 01:48 with no holes made or a lid required. The water flows downward from the top opening thru a coarse sponge or floss, then thru the rock, ceramic-bio or even tank gravel, then up the lift tube situated an inch or more from the bottom via an air stone (or a small powerhead set to low flow with a foam pad at the lift tube intake to protect the impeller). Cleaning is simply by removing the container (easier with the lift tube pulled out first), then rinsing the media in tank water, then replacing the lift tube & repacking the media. I've successfully used this low tech filtration with 5g (a 12 oz cup with a lift tube an inch beneath the surface works great for a betta tank) and 10g tanks. It'll also work well for a 20g if used with HOB. Hope this is helpful - cheers!

i only used pebbles and its very effective. Before, even if its just 3days it gets cloudy but when ive made a diy filter (plastic bottle with pebbles and airstone inside) it really makes different.

A variation of this I've used is a Breeder Box in a 50g. Fragmented lava rock, bio-ceramic or even your tank gravel on the bottom. Then a 1 & 3/16 " lift tube on top of the bottom fry/egg plate with coarse filtration sponge with the top of the box left open. The water flows thru the side slots and the open surface of the sponge. Works well with an airstone or 'hot rodded' with a powerhead (make sure to foam pad the intake to protect the ph impeller from rock/gravel fragments). Cleans easily in place by pressing your vacuum tube into the sponge and around the sides. Works great in combination with a HOB. Hope this is helpful ... cheers!
