    I'd love to see the bipe re-fitted with a small engine, like a single fitted with toothed belt driven props so thrust line remains about same. with the right muffler set up it wouldn't be all that loud, and it'd gain a whole lot of flight time with just a 1 gallon gas tank.

    Pete, The landing gear is going to kill you. When was the last time you came across an aluminum spring? Aluminum doesn't like being flexed. It work hardens terribly. and it doesn't matter how thick or thin it is. Replace what you have with steel, or put a hinge joint at the fuselage. The two sides aren't going to fail at the same time, so when one side fails..... Odds are you will be going fast when it happens.

    As rough as it may have looked, the stressed skin design of your biplane's fuselage seems superior to what you are trying to do this time around. Within limits of available vision, the fuselage you have built seems to be a single-plane truss with no rigid carrythrough structure from the front of the fin past the upper longeron to the lower longeron, just assemblies with bolted joints at points of concentrated loads. The fin has a lot of leverage over those simple attachments. Wire bracing to the horizontal stabiliser will secure the fin relative to the stabiliser but not help this issue The arch in the structure relies entirely on the bolted joint through two plates which are not tied together other than by the through-bolts. There are no additional webs on the undersides in lieu of welded strips joining the two plates which would be a best method. Once you have the mass of your wings and engine attached, the fuselage may "fishtail" violently enough to loosen the bolts, elongate the bolt holes and start cracks before you can put the aircraft onto the ground. Your method has been done before except it was a single tube structure between wing and tail. It also broke as yours may also. The cause of the failure was aerodynamic flutter, a condition in which destructively violent energy is extracted from the airflow due to flexing of the airframe or parts of it. The tail twisted under and control was lost. Do you have any anti-crush inserts inside those hollow tubes where they are through-bolted. Have you considered an aviation grade adhesive between the faces of those bolted pieces to avoid fretting and opening of a clearance between bolted attached fittings. It might be a good thing if you consult with some engineers on the torsional and vibrational stresses your airframe will be subjected to which may be far more destructive than the aerodynamic loads you anticipate. They also know about the failure modes of bolted structures. If you are using a gas engine, then it is a whole new ball game compared with your smooth running electric motors on your previous project. Please consult with the Oshkosh folk. You will find them helpful in a safety oriented way and they will have the knowledge which will help you avoid reinventing some old design dead-ends. Please do not dismiss their advice. Look up airworthiness directives on the Skyfox lift strut carrythough structure. You seem to be re-inventing something similar with inferior materials. old.raa.asn.au/documents/airworthiness/AN%2095-6%20Issue%205_amdt_1.pdf

    You seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that this isn't the first airplane this kid has ever built. Might pay to kjnow the background before ASSuming the need for an engineering lecture. Oh, by the way, he's not showing EVERY little detail so it's a safe bet he's addressed your concerns in some fashion already or will at some future point. Most homebuilts are assembled at least a half dozen times before they are completed.

  • @DARANGULAFILM

    @DARANGULAFILM

    I am not oblivious at all. That said, I would rather open my mouth and make a fool of myself than keep something to myself I later regret not having said. Been there, not going there again. If it is all useless wordstuff then that's what it is but just maybe there is a small scrap of something useful. I also fully respect this young guy for his energy, getting in there and having a go, not lazing around consuming the efforts of others. This clip does not indicate he was intending to use electric motors again. The follow-up clip of his taxi tests I have viewed since show that there are two electric motors pylon mounted ahead of a single high wing. This obviates some concerns relating to the single truss arrangement. He is too young to have to endure a lifetime disability of spinal injury because of a hard landing which might be avoided.

    These bolts are subject to rotational forces, and should be on drilled bolts with castle nuts and a cotter-key. Similarly, the ball joints on the torque tube should have large washers under the bolt heads to prevent the fitting from falling off the bolt in the event of a failure in the ball.

    The quarter inch aluminum plate sharp bend of the landing gear, at the fuselage. If that fails consider bending a larger radius then it currently has. A small radius concentrates stresses of the bending. A larger radius distributions the stresses of the forces out in a wider radius. good job I love watching your enthusiasm as you go through your projects so quickly!

    Great work Peter , Hey if you had a unlimited budget would you build with carbon fiber. Would a wing shaped blimp ,like the B-2 stealth bomber filled with hydrogen an with top mounted solar panels an electric motors be a good lifting platform. With the new technology's to hold hydrogen an compress it an carbon fiber. It should be very safe today.

  • @OtherTheDave

    @OtherTheDave

    6 жыл бұрын

    Is the hydrogen necessary? Lifting bodies only make lift when they’re moving; it might work better to add batteries and more motors.

  • @linecraftman3907

    @linecraftman3907

    A lot can go wrong with this. If peter had unlimited budget , he'd probably built a jet version :D Also compressing hydrogen isn't really useful , since you'd loose buoyancy

  • @jamesburleson1916

    @jamesburleson1916

    if you're going to go with lighter than air, go that way 100%. I've seen ideas for a blimp to be used in logging remote places that would use wings and engines mounted on rotating mounts on the envelope, which would also rotate around it's longitudinal axis. This would allow the system to provide much greater lift than what just the gas in the envelope could provide, but I imagine it would be a maintenance nightmare with all those weight bearing rotating joints. Also I wonder what the FAA would do regulations wise with a personal airship. It certainly weighs less than 250lbs.

    There is a guy down in Brazil that is using what I think is a hot air blimp to deliver researchers to the tree tops in the jungle. FAA is allowing experimental hot air balloons so I expect they have a way of staying legal. Only, the weight limits apply without the lifting effect of the gas, whichever you use IIRC.

    Looks great! One thing to consider is to make the elevator control all with hard links. Take a peek into some sailplanes for ideas and inspiration, you will hardly see an elevator with cable controls. I do not think I have seen one myself in my entire life, perhaps "basic" gliders? Fine for rudder, but for the elevator you do NOT want the, flip-flop, inaccuracies, snag, sag, oscillations, harmonics and cable breaks. A hard link control feels a whole lot more solid. There will be considerable forces between your elevator and control stick, while a very tight tolerance for errors at the landing phase.. The current elevator setup is dangerous.
