DIY 3-Bay Carport Build (Part 3: Posts & Beams)
Welcome to Part 3 of our carport build series showing the post and beam installations. In this video I will cover the installation of 16 4x6 support posts and the 4x6 beams that will run across the tops of them to form a base for our rafters (covered in next video). Lots of tedious measuring and string line work in this step to make sure everything is in the right position. Other than that, just a good bit of post hole digging and concrete filling.
This will be a 3-bay 30'x24' post and beam carport with a single slope metal roof. The posts and beams will be 4x6 lumber, the rafters will be 2x6 lumber, and the purlins will be 1x3 lumber. Metal roof panels will be attached to the purlins with no sheathing.
Please let me know down below if you have any questions or comments, and stop back to see everything go together. Thanks for watching!

The quality of this will last for years! Better than rebuilding every few years due to the elements for sure!!

That's the idea. Hope it works out that way!
Brian, you're doing a heck of a job. You've got a good eye.

Thanks, Al!
All those post holes by hand! That little bit of clay really helps in that situation. Your layout looks great. That car port is almost as big as our whole house! Merry Christmas!

Yep, all 16! They did hold their shape pretty well. Same here with the size. We've actually been using it to figure the layout of our house. I think it will be about the same dimensions. Merry Christmas to you and Yvonne!
Looking real professional Brian.👌

Thanks, bud. And thanks for all the advice.
Nice Carport Brian, i would strongly recommend some hurricane type strapping up and over posts and rafters. Monsoons can uplift pretty crazy. (Former GC)

Thanks, Warren!
Way cool! I really like the mulch around the perimeter. I think you should have asked to borrow Bill's post hole digger - unless you're trying to reach Jim "Dirt" Bonilla status! When you go to build the house, if you want, you can borrow my laser level.

Post hole digging builds character 😀! Laser level would be awesome. I've never used one, but I had myself tied up in strings during this build!
Excellent

Nice work. By chance you guys have video of the Jupiter/Saturn thing. I figure with your night sky, it would be pretty cool

Didn't get it!
Mini ex with an auger attachment. It's worth it for bigger or numerous post digging work.
