Dixon of Dock Green 1973 - BBC

This the gentlest of TV police series started in 1955 continuing through to 1976 - indeed becoming, at the time the longest running police television series. The star Jack Warner, was already familiar to the British public as an actor and comedian before becoming PC George, later to be Sargeant Dixon. Despite Z Cars and Softly Softly, Dixon still in the 1960's attracted nearly 14,000,000 viewers weekly. This is an edited 'snippet' from a 1973 episode 'Firearms were issued' written by N.J. Crisp. The Copyright in this video segment belongs to the BBC. © BBC 1973

Actor Peter Thornton played a PC in Dixon of dock green for many years. He was a great friend of mine and is dearly missed.

I loved this programme and watched it each Saturday after Dr Who in 1971 onwards when I was 9 - loved the idea of being a Police Officer so much I became one in 1986 and have 18 mths left till my 30 yrs service and am a Sergeant. There was something about Mr Warner's portrayal that is still with me in principle today - firm but always fair, helpful never dismissive but it's never personal - just doing my job. So pleased to see this clip again, thank you for uploading it - I know I made the right choice - some love us, some despise us - Good night all !!!

I've been on the right side of the law, working with police, and unfortunately on the wrong side of the law, arrested and convicted on one occasion. I have to say that 95% of police officers, are very professional and reasonable. Don't act like a dick with them and you will get the same treatment in return. Yes there are the 5% who greatly let down their colleagues and the service as a whole. Also, the type of clients you deal with will never see themselves at fault and will see you as the bad guys. I have done a lot of travelling in my life, and perhaps biased, I say we have one of the best police services in the world and I'm grateful to you. Thank god we don't live in America or some third world countries. Thank you for your service

This takes me back - early evening Saturday entertainment. A great favourite, and it never occurred to me that "George Dixon" was already close to the police retirement age when he first appeared in the 1950's. By the time this clip was made, Jack Warner was around 77 years old. He continued playing Dixon until he was 80 years old, in 1976. He could barely walk any distance by then and had to be stationed behind the counter or at a desk in the final seasons. It was astonishingly popular, and Warner was a much-loved star. This is fantastic - I loved the show. Happy memories - only 3 channels and they went off the air at night! A different era, indeed.

It's amazing how real my memories of this show are. Fifty years gone in an instant. Me then more real than me watching this on my laptop now. And nearly everybody from then gone. It takes a wee bit of courage to even watch this.

As someone once said, you know you're getting old when Police Officers start to look like youngsters to you, well let's just say I seem to be seeing a lot of whippersnapper youngsters in Police uniforms nowadays Lol, I can remember this series though, the ones from the early 1970's that is, although I know it started way before then, my late elder brother used to watch the earlier ones, he was also a huge fan of this show, it was certainly one of the very best TV shows of it's day, many of these series sure do reflect the times they were made in, this was made in a much simpler time than we live in today I fear, thanks for the uploads GLFVIDEO :)

Be nice if the new regime at Foxtel could air programs like Dixon of Dock Green, not seen this on TV in this country as I recall. Can recommend it as good old school Police drama. It's an old line, but they don't make 'em like this anymore ! Jack Warner is a bloody legend !!!

The uploader seems unaware of the fact that Dixon of Dock Green was a spin off of the film the Blue Lamp in which Dixon was shot and killed by a petty criminal played by Dirk Bogarde. He was resurrected for the TV series.

@GaspingMenace Quite possibly. You are of course correct, old Jack was way too old for active Police duty, but he soldiered (pardon the pun) on. I was growing up at the time the series was in it's prime (1960's) it was the portrayal of police personell on Dixon that formed my respect for the police force as I grew up. Now, like Dixon ,those days have gone.. GLF
