Divine diplomacy-how Jagannath shaped a millennium of Indian politics

Amidst the 2024 Jagannath Rath Yatra, Anirudh Kanisetti dives into the god's medieval origins, during which Jagannatha participated in a struggle for regional dominance between the Chola, Ganga, and Kakatiya dynasties. As it turns out, Jagannath is much more than Puri: he reveals the flow of ideas and innovations across a huge swathe of southern India.

Jagannathaha worship was prevalent in Odisha( Kalinga) even before the Ganga rulers. Inscriptions testify that Chadagangadeva only renovated an old temple. The correct word is RAUTA or RAUT , that comes from the word RAJPUTRA . Many Odia Khandayats still use it as their surname . Kalapahar attacked Odisha in 1568 , when king of Odisha Mukunda Harichandan was killed in an internal uprising. Jagannathaha is regarded as incarnation of Vishnu , one of the trinity of Hindu mythology. To tell more precisely he is none other than PURNA BRAHMA , as is evidenced in SUNYA SAMHITA of Achyutananda Das . Here He is regarded as SUNYA PURUSHA . Buddhism also influenced Jagannatha culture heavily. Perhaps, Buddha was included among AVATARAS of Vishnu in Odisha at first. We get the reference of it JAYADEVA's DASHAVATARA STOTRAM.

Nothing is mentioned of how the worship of both Shiva and Vishnu was popularized by the Bhakthi Saints of Tamil Nadu. The egalitarian and vernacular spirit of their hymns was the impetus for the Chozhans to build such magnificent structures for local gods. The Bhakthi tradition had a marked influence throughout Asia, Puri being one example of many.

I don't know why people are getting triggered. Virtually all great religious sites, in India or elsewhere, have complex socio-political history. Actually talking about them helps us to know the past and understand the present. Can't we see even now how the temple comes up in political discourse? Purists may try to silence or undermine these discussions but in doing so they start becoming like a mirror image of those traditions they dislike the most. Don't try to hide. Let's understand history. After all time doesn't stop whatever the history of these major cultural and religious places be the present and the future is wide open. The past is fixed like the root but branches of the future can take many new directions. Jagannatha temple is one of India's greatest religious places and we can safely say that's going to remain so for a long long time .

MADALA PANJI says " Deula bada baisama hela , eha bhanji goteman aan Kari tolaiba"( The temple has gone to ruins , another should be constructed, destroying the present) . Vaishnavism has a very ancient root in Odisha. Shankaracharya paid visit to Puri . Kharvela mentioned of KALINGA JINA which perhaps was the predecessor of Jagannatha. Indrabhuti or King Ja of Tantrik Buddhism mentioned of JAGANNATHA, perhaps to refer Buddha . Jagannathaha has a close link with Lord Buddha. In ancient time Buddhism flourished in Odisha and therefore the state has so many Buddist sites . Jainist, Buddist and Vaishnavite ..all elements are traceable in Jagannatha culture. Besides, the SAVARAs (Saora) of Odisha worships a god named KITTUNG, who resembles Jagannatha to a great extent. They have been doing so from time immemorial. So, if you are fixed on the belief that Jagannatha originated only in the mediaeval period, only as status symbol of imperial Gangas it's only travesty of truth. Now a days every thing is passed as research work. It's appaling to find that even foreign universities patronise researches that are nothing but propaganda.
