Divine Comedy - Bad Ambassador - Beautiful Acoustic Version
This came on a disc that came free with the Independent about 12 years ago and I've loved the song ever since. I only today realised that this version isn't available anywhere and it is in my opinion hugely superior to the album version.

Just discovered Regeneration a few days ago and it has completely redefined how I live my life. This album is slept on by literally everyone.
Such a gorgeous song. I'll never get tired of it.

I have the very same free disc! Mine came from The Independent. I first heard this tune played by Hannon on acoustic guitar on Jonathon Ross's Saturday morning Radio 2 show about a year before this disc came out, and was totally gobsmacked - even better than this version. It really stuck in my head, and so I was chuffed to get it as a freebie in the paper. Agreed that the album version ain't as good.

You're quite right, it was the Independent.
I just can't get past the guitar, which has that placky thin DI onboard-mic sound. Recorded live so an artist works with what they have, but still.

@@yairhoffman2355 Yes. I've just come up to bed now but tomorrow I'll try to send you the link that someone sent to me in the 1990s..... I have the acoustic version that Neil sent out as a sampler, just him and his guitar.

Completely agree with your description. I heard this version first, everything about it is what a song should be - its clever, original, meaningful, timeless - then I heard the album version and I thought the antithesis, a bog standard mediocre pop song.
