Dividing polynomials using long division
👉 Learn how to divide polynomials using the long division algorithm. To be able to solve a polynomial, we need to be able to get the factors and hence the zeros. To get the factors, we use the rational zeros theorem to get one of the zeros and hence one of the factors and then divide the original polynomial with the factor obtained to get the remaining factors.
To divide a polynomial using the long division algorithm, we continuosly divide the polynomial (dividend) with the term having the highest power on the variable(s) in the divisor to get the quotient. We will then multiply all the terms of the divisor by the quotient and subtract the result from the dividend. The result is divided again by the term having the highest power in the variable in the divisor to get another term of the quotient. This process is repeated until the term having the highest power of the variable in the divisor can no longer divide into the dividend.
The result after subtracting the product of the last term of the quotient and the divisor from the remaining part of the dividend is the the remainder when the divisor divides the original polynomial. If the remainder is zero, then the divisor is a factor of the original polynomial.

Brian.. you are the best teacher ever! Whenever I get stuck on math and find a video by you I understand it in less than 10 minutes! You are the god of the math teaching world and for that I pray to you 🙏
thank you for your kind words, I know it's tough and frustrating trying to understand math at times. Keep up the hard work. I'll do my best to keep making videos for you,
Finally able to understand this! My teacher never really explained where they got the numbers, so while I was always trying to figure out where a number came from, I ended up getting behind in the lesson.

My teacher explained it, but... didn't do a really good job, then proceeded to tell me I "wasn't trying" lmaoooooooooo.
I was told as a child that I was "bad at math" because I had trouble learning new concepts (despite being very good with arithmetic) so I've developed mental blocks which make my brain shut off and my heart-rate spike whenever I see a sheet of paper with numbers on it. Watching these videos and learning in plain terms has helped remind me that I'm *not* "bad at math" and I just need to breathe in and get past my insecurities. Thank you, Mr. McLogan. I'm more proud of the C I have in college algebra than any A I've ever gotten.
Mclogan, man it’s been 12 years since you posted this. I’m in tenth grade, only been watching your channel since the sixth grade, but you’ve help me so much. I can’t explain how much these videos help my grade. I’ve been stuck on this topic for so long, and then suddenly a light bulb went off. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I love your videos , I help my son with his Math and I watch these videos to clear my concepts - its like I am learning Math again after 30 years .. You make it so easy..
I didn't learn long division when I was in elementary school because I had a disability. But I love re-learning things to get even more ahead in math, not just the subject but doing the same thing for other clases. I appreciate the help from this video Mr. Mclogan, it's actually easier than the way my teacher did it today it was a little confusing but, I'm understanding it now.
Love how you explain everything clearly and concisely. Sorry to my math teacher but when he explains, it's like he's trying to make someone remember how to do it, not teach someone who's new how to do it.

Hello Brian. First of all I want to thank you for the excellent classes you have posted. I'm taking college algebra and many times I have to watch videos because I finished high school like 45 years ago and I don't remember everything. I'm doing my best but there are things that I forget easily because of my age. You make this class easier to understand. I wish you my very best!!
Me and my classmates have been struggling a lot with our current math teacher but when i watched this, everything clicked! Tysm!!
I had forgotten so much of my math. This is a great refresher course. Thank you Brian. 👍👍👍
Thank you for helping me out. Breaking it down easily by hold it places value. The professor doesn't breaking easily as you do.
I really enjoyed watching this video because it helped me really understand how to divide polynomials and it felt like I was learning in a classroom again. Any questions I had in the beginning regarding polynomial long division was answered in this video and I now know how to solve these types of equations. I especially liked that you chose an equation that has a remainder so now I know how to solve any polynomial problem even if the remainder ends up as 0. Thank you for this great explanation!
Wow even tho this video was posted 9 years ago it still helped out a lot. Thanks🙏🏼✝️

Nice video man! Keep up the good work!
I got a A+ on my math test thanks to your video. Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Learning from this video in 2022! Thanks for this.
So what if the exponent skips from lets say x^4 to just x. Do I keep it as is and work it out or do I have to put in the other exponents(2 and 3) and make x = 0
One question, in an example lets say the exercise is (x5+4x3-3x-12) / (x-3), now when ur start dividing u get ur first divided number which was x4, now u have to apply that to ur -3, so u do that its -3x4 (exponent is 4), now there my term that i have just made, its exponent is not equal to the 4x3 that we have to divide or "substract", what do i do with the exponent( or term 4x3) that is bigger than the terms exponent ( the one u are substracting from), i dont know what to do with them, do i add them? do i substract them? or do i leave them alone, some how.
This is literally saving me right now thank you! I’m good at math but I need to study this more😊
