Divided on the field

The end of segregation wasn't as simple as changing a few rules. In this episode, ‪@TraeCrowderLiberalRedneck‬ takes a look at the role one of the South's favorite pastimes played in moving the country forward.
The American South is a complicated place, and we know a lot less about it than we think we do. And many things about the South that seem to make no sense are less confounding in context. The reality is the history of many Southern things has been manipulated, hidden, or just plain ignored. Trae Crowder guides us through the pride points, failures, and contradictions in "Southin' Off."

I liked the way you wove in the political current difficulties concerning college football-based lifeform Tommy Tuberville who has come to believe since he’s awesome at coaching he knows something about anything else.

You're singing my song on affirmative action. I wrote this up recently in reply to a Facebook friend with, ahem, another viewpoint: the argument for affirmative action I find persuasive is demographic: White folks are down below 60% of the population of this country. It's in the 59-58% range now. Which puts white men in the 29% range of the population. But if you look at the people among the leadership in this country broadly, white men are way above 29%. And that's changing way slower than the overall population. Here's the problem: drawing your best and brightest from 29% of the population is not a recipe for national greatness. How much better would we be doing if we gave others a fairer shot? If all us white guys were on a level playing field with the rest? The problem with affirmative action we might agree on is it doesn't start early enough. Kids of wealthy (often white) parents benefit from boosts that others don't, which leads to unequal advantages all down the line.

It was nice to hear about this. Where I live sports are nothing but a massive inconvenience, Messing up commutes and filling the city with some of the most obnoxious people. Because of that, I feel like I needed to hear something like this about the good sports can actually do.

As a Buckeye fan, I'd like to point out that The Ohio State University accounted for 2 of the 4 non-Southern college wins. We do exist!

Trae says Alabama is the "most dominant college football program" and you can just see the pain on his face. That had to hurt to say out loud.

Hate when you go from percentages to numbers, for the viewing audience, 14 out of 130 coaches is about 11%... thanks for making me do simple math tonight (seriously) says geeky aerospace engineering guy

Now if only some team can stop the juggernaut that is Boston’s women’s pro football team the renegades (they’ve won the national championship 5 years in a row, and I think have had 4 perfect seasons doing it too).

In the north, colleges focus on academics. Compare the ratio of Nobel prizes to football championships.

As long as football is the only category where the south wins against the north, i think the country will progress. Slowly.

I know it's not the point, but Bama doesn't get to claim Bear by itself. Bear is from Cleveland County, Arkansas. So in a way... Bama owes their success to us...😂 yes, I am aware those are fighting words.
