In May my wife and I are going on our first cruise in 26 years. We both come from humble blue collar backgrounds. I do however own 7 suits and plenty of ties for religious reasons. Should we just skip formal night and eat in the buffet instead? We don’t like talking about work when we are on vacation. We could care less about what anyone does for a living. People are people. Or should we just suck it up and fill half our luggage with dress clothes? Maybe there should be separate dining rooms. Seams like a good idea.

Not many people now a days dress up with a jacket and tie for dinner on a cruise ship. As far as I'm concerned it makes having dinner an unnecessary hassle. The key is to relax and enjoy your dining experience, just don casual attire in good taste and you will fit in just fine. Those who show up wearing shorts and tank tops in the main dining room should be directed to dine in the buffet. Enjoy your cruise my friend. 26 years is much too long. @@kenlehigh6363

We were on a Royal Caribbean cruise where a group of young men arrived straight from the pool, one shirtless and wearing a sombrero. The manager escorted them out. The next time we saw them, they had clothes on and had left the sombrero somewhere. I want to believe they just didn’t know any better. I didn’t envy the manager at all

I love the look of a dining room with folks dressed up-the tween girls in their first kitten heels, the toddlers in their suits, women in some killer dresses, men in tuxes (there was a time when zoot suits made a comeback). Formal night used to be FUN. Now, it’s another thing to fight about. I agree with those that say if the ship HAS a dress code, then the ship needs to enforce it. Period.

On our first cruise in 2002, we were celebrating our anniversary and the reason for this trip. Everything was going fine until we went to our dinner in the main dining room. We were dressed nicely, me in a dressy black long black velvet skirt and silky blouse, my husband in his suit, no tie. We were paired at a table with another couple who were dressed no better than we were. Conversation turned to what we did for a living. When the other man learned that my husband was an Electrical Supervisor at a large refinery and I was an Administrative Assistant for the same refinery, the man acted like we had thrown cold water in his face. His whole demeanor changed. The woman, on the other hand, several years younger than him, was very friendly and we had been chatting amiably. After that it was a very quiet dinner. Next day we were walking around the deck and happened to run into the same couple and the young woman smiled and said hello to me. Her husband grabbed her elbow, whispered something to her and walked her away quickly. I have never been snubbed so rudely before. I was questioning myself. Evidently snobbery is not dead. My husband and I both have dealt with upper management throughout our careers. This had to be the worst I’ve ever personally experienced. That turned me off wanting to sit with strangers back then. Since that cruise, we have met some really fun, friendly, and comical dinner partners. One bad apple only spoiled it once, thank goodness.

I have been on many Viking cruises and never felt that they took safety casually. I think a more detailed review of the incident will show that a faulty oil level sensor shut down main propulsion and contributed to the severity of the incident. Viking ships are some of the newest and best engineered in the industry. They are actually much safer than the new mega class ships that are so top heavy they scare the crap out of most naval engineers. Truth be told the 5,000 passenger ships are accidents waiting to happen if they get stuck in bad weather.

Reminds me of the time I went to a concert (symphony) and wore jeans and a shirt. Some people were in fancy evening wear and one woman in a gown glared at me like I didn't belong. But the fact is that I paid for my ticket, I appreciate symphony, and if she'd rather huff over my clothing instead of appreciate the great music we listened to, that's her problem. As I recall, Viking Sky was Viking's very first oceangoing ship. Nowadays they are consistently rated as one of the best cruise lines at sea, but they got INCREDIBLY lucky with that incident; very close to a disaster. We can hope they've learned some lessons since then.

"Smart casual" (slightly dressy comfortable clothes) is considerate of fellow passengers. We recently saw a mother and teenage daughter come into the main dining room, both wearing halter tops and ragged cutoff jeans that came within 1/2" of being porno graphic. So yes, there are different kinds of people.

Just because you do something (say whatever you please) doesn't mean you should. There are cruises that are purposfully casual (like NCL), others that are purposfully formal (Cunard) and everything in between. Choose your cruiseline based on how you want to cruise and problem solved! People find the oddest things as their hill to die on. You're on vacation in places considered beautiful paradises. If ya spend your time grumpy about what others wear, you're gonna miss the best parts.

Even though NCL is casual, there are a few speciality dining options that have a dress code. I like that, I don't want to dress every evening for dinner but one or two nights I like to get dolled up for photos.

There's a difference between being dressed up (in business casual) and dressed to the nines. Less than 1% of passengers on any given cruise are going to want to dress to the nines every night. The main dining room is the main dining room it is not an exclusive high-end restaurant and therefore anyone who wants to pretend that it is has plenty of other choices on board.

There are a LOT of people who hate buffets because it's disgusting. I don't have a huge issue with wearing slacks or even a formal night but I don't eat at buffets on land so why should someone be forced to eat there or pay for one of the speciality dining options.

They do have dress codes and they absolutely enforce them however, there are less than 1% of cruisers on any given cruise ship that are going to want to dress to the nines every night. Those who want to dress to the nines every night are more than free to do so and if they have a problem with others not dressing to the nines maybe they should try a cruise line that doesn't go by the title "The fun ships".

On the Viking. They had one Generator down evidently. Then they had a list and another Generator couldn’t pick up oil, and evidently locked up. So yeah I can see an issue with them going out in the first place. A list which resulted in the main engine not being able to pick up oil contributed to the sinking of the El Faro…

I am scheduled to go on Symphony of the Seas on April 6th to Aruba and curacao, and now that labadee is cancelled, we are heading to Falmouth instead. Unless your sailing on Cunard or even P&O most cruise lines have very lax rules when it comes to dress code in the MDR. In fact I think dressing up for formal night is your own choice. Most cruise lines don't allow ball caps in the mdr for dinner to begin with. Also their own kind?! What are we that don't want to dress to the nines? Alien life forms? Just kidding. I think if you're wearing a swim suit and flip-flops to the mdr then you should be turned away and go to the buffet instead. Happy spring and happy spring holidays to everyone(I'm including all the spring holidays of all religions). Also why did it take so long to determine the viking cruise ship was not sea worthy
