I'm almost a year out of this nightmare. Wish I would have run across you about 2 years ago. By the time I get sent to a specialist by a doctor who would finally listen, my sigmoid was a twisted wad of scar tissue. My colon also flopped to my right side and fistulated to a fallopian tube. I've had 5 surgeries in less than a year to repair all the damage. I'm so grateful to finally be feeling like my old self again.

Dr. Parker, you have broken it down to the simplest terms and I certainly appreciate that. A friend just told me he was hospitalized for having D'itis, no other explanation was given. I've recently had emergency surgery due to bowel perforation, after my Diverticulitis symptoms were misdiagnosed as gastroenteritis. I relapsed several days after the first emergency surgery, and the second ended with a Stoma/colostomy. From personal experience I think it's important to let people know these measures are not the end of the world, and you can still live a normal life. Reversal is also possible in many cases after around six months. Positivity is important to patients when you end up with bad news. Look for support nurses and groups, you will get through it and be fine.

I have a colostomy due to rectal cancer. I also had my gallbladder removed. And I had diverticulitis. Feel much better gut wise. Having a stoma and a bag is not the end of the world. I’m still alive!

I had three bouts of diverticulitis within six weeks. The second time I ended up with peritonitis. In hospital for 13 days on a PICC line. Went home, the next day, I began projectile vomiting and the pain was severe again. Back to the hospital and had 3 feet of my descending colon removed without a colostomy! The recovery was very painful and very hard, but each day I got better. That was ten years ago. Fine today.

Mary Botkin I had small bowel resection surgery a few weeks ago due to a perforation in my small bowel due to Diverticulitis. My doctor said it was rare since it usually presents itself in the colon. I’m still trying to recover. But it’s very painful. I’ve had two c-sections and this has by far been the most painful surgery. God bless.

Just take things extremely easy. REST as much as possible. Keeping hydrated is more important than eating right now. Broth (especially bone broth) would be great for you. I got very constipated due to the pain meds that I had to take. so Colace (check w/ your doctor, first!) was my best friend. Keeping you in my prayers for a speedy, and easier recovery. xoxo

Thank you for posting this I had diverticulitis for a long time and did not know it until my colon perforated unexpectedly. My Dr said that I'm one of his youngest patients to have a perforation but due to the amount of processed foods we eat he's seeing younger and younger people suffer from this and other gut issues. Ileostomies and ostomies are on the rise amongst young people. I ended up with an ileostomy and lucky to be alive.

I went to the ER thinking I may have appendicitis. I was in the fetal position on the floor in pain. I was diagnosed with this without a whole lot of explanation. Thank you for making this to help me understand it better.

Thanks for the great information! I had diverticulitis two years ago and it hurt so badly that I went to the ER. Luckily it wasn't too bad, the doctor just prescribed me some antibiotics and told me to increase my fiber intake. I was fine since then but I think it came back today 😢 Really hope I could get this cured without having surgeries. Hopefully no hospital visits necessary.

happyscrub that’s exactly what I was gonna write before I got caught up into reading comments. I noticed he was in scrubs and I noticed his environment and figured he’s a resident or is in the mid of a very long shift or something - idk I’m not in the medical field. In any case, I figured that he must be super busy but he’s taking time out of his life anyway to educate ppl and I just wanted to thank him.

Thanks for the explanation. Had been suffering from symptoms of this for the last ten days. Luckily, my wife persuaded me to go to the hospital this morning. I was able to get away with two antibiotics prescriptions. Hopefully, they resolve the problem and I don’t get this again. One of the worst feelings I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been needing to lose weight and change my diet for quite some time now. This is all the reason I need to kick start my diet.

Thank you for explaining it so well. I have just come out of the hospital after an overnight stay with Diverticulitis. On a drip for 2 days and was given IV antibiotics and antibiotics to take at home for 8 days. I have Fibromyalgia as well so thr pain was heightened. Because of COVID19 l could actually see my Dr so got treated for a urine infection. It was so painful! I'm very lucky that we have the NHS in England.

Great info explains a bit on my father's sings but his symptoms don't match but then again he keeps a lot to himself, thank you.

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis at 18 the doctors couldn't believe it they placed tubes to drain out the abscesses, but ufortunately I've had alot of abdominal surgeries I just had part of my colon removed two years ago.I'm now 24 and haven't had an episode since the surgery antibiotics helped greatly and of course staying away from nuts although now I can enjoy them every now and again

Thanks Dr Parker. My doctor found when pressing on the right side of my abdomen, the left side hurt, but the ct didn't show any signs of diverticulitis. Though there was scattered diverticula throughout, and 'questonable' mild thickening of the sigmoid.

i have had a few years of bowl and digestion problems,to recently not being able to move my bowls at all,having lower left pain,i have to double up on movilate and other laxitives in order to move my bowls,in doing so i can move them if lucky once every 8 to 9 days which is agony on the tummy etc,waiting on a camera being inserted to find out what is going on,this has been a long drawen out process,hopefully there will be a light at the end of the tunnel,may i add that this all started for me after my gallbladder was removed,great video explained a lot thanks

I got a CT Scan two days ago for lower right pain and they wanted to rule out appendicitis, which they did. In turn they found “mild diverticulitis” and put me on a 7 day regimen of cipro and flagil (sp?). I saw by your video having it on the right side is uncommon. I’m feeling pain as I type this. Been overly bloated lately (I have severe IBS and get bloated quite often, but more so now. Yippee...🙄) with frequent heartburn (have GERD too) so I’ve been using Gas-X and Nexium a lot more lately. Hoping the double dose of antibiotics work. Following up with my primary care physician when I return and then my gastroenterologist. Fun times ahead. Yup. Going on a business trip in two days. No pain, please. Thank you for the informative video!

Julie janangle I was reading the comments and yours stuck out. My hubby has mild diverticula and heart burn. Heart burn went away after valve replacement for heart So did many others in the recovery ward for heart issues too. If you still have heart burn please get that checked.

This is much better than going to your doctor. Very informative. I’d like to know how you heal these naturally

if yall were put on antibiotics, please take probiotics! my mom was suffering from consecutive episodes and what made it better was plain kefir with honey. also watch diet, slowly start adding solid food, you may start feeling better but your colon can still be inflammed!

Thanks for the information! Not sure what is going on with me. For 6 months, I've been having discomfort/pain in my left abdomen, whether I eat/not eat, stand, sit, lay, etc. Also dealing with gross hematuria, enlarged prostate, and progressive lumbar spine pain. Colonoscopy scheduled for this Friday, 3/31/17, plus working with the Urologist on the other items. Some days I feel old at 56 y/o. Hoping and praying this will turn out ok.

Hi this last month has been a tough one for me was in and out of the ER with diverticulitis took the antibiotics for 10 days and started feel better! Was feeling pretty good again and the boom! It came back! Spent yesterday in the ER another CT scan was done. The Dr said Diverticulitis and Colitis! Was sent home with another 10 days cipro and flagil. My left side hurts so bad it's hard to get comfortable!

1MinuteFlipDoc Causing some severe diverticulitis.

After going through the nightmare of having a kidney stone that got stuck and then having to have the procedure to remove it and having a stent put in, the pain persisted weeks after the stent removal and felt almost like it did before when it should have been healed up good. I found out 2 days ago that I have Diverticulitis and had no idea what it was and it wasn't explained to me too well. I would go to the ER in severe pain (like 8 out of 10 and getting worse) and they would do an x-ray and tell me that I was constipated on that left side which made no sense to me because I was still having loose movements. They blamed my pain on that and sent me home. I have had some of the symptoms for years and told my GP about it and all he did was shrug it off. Thanks for posting this video so I could learn more about it. I feel like I understand what it is better but also terrified at what could happen if things were to get ugly.

Only on CT with contrast can see if you have diverticulitis.Two months ago I was to ER with terrible pain of diverticulitis ( this was the 5th episode in 3 years) .After CT in ER they told me that I have in the same time one episode of diverticulitis and a kidney stone 5 mm ,stack in my uretra They did the procedure to take out the stone and put me on intravenous antibiotic for 2 days and to continiu with antibiotic 8 days home.After 1and1/2 months I have again one episode of diverticulitis and I start to take antibiotic for 10 days.If this start to have to often episodes, i have to go for surgery and ai'm so scarry.

Sandy Reynolds Sorry I never seen this before. It was a CT scan that showed it. Since then I have been diagnosed with myofasical pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, Sjogrens, IBS and GERD. I have had diverticulitis 3 times and still having frequent left kidney stones.

mariana bucurescu It is scary. Make sure to not eat anything that will irritate it. I have also had multiple CTs and have now had diverticulitis 3 times over the last 2 years. I have others things going on too. It seems that one thing leads to others. I have had 7 left kidney stones, 1 right kidney stone and gravel every time I have a stone.

Pretty sure I’ve been misdiagnosed and have this. Going back to ER.

Could this possible give a feeling or sensation of taking your breath away if this makes sense I have strange feeling I the same area and have been trying to explain it to a doctor. I also feel breathless too

I have some diverticules, no blood in the stool, but the sensation of burning inside this aerie and pain on the low back, the chills, the stinking gluey transpiration and eternal esch.coli in the urine for more than 2 years, what could it be?

Why when I touch my stomach on the right side it hurts a lot? I no longer have an appendix.

A diverticulum is a small pouch with a narrow neck that sticks out from (protrudes from) the wall of the gut (intestine). 'Diverticula' means more than one diverticulum.

Forgive me, for I almost flipped past Dr. Parker's video. For quite some time, I have scoured many sources for sensible information, even in person, and no one has been as half as enlightening as this. Dr. Parker, thank you! Now. I have much better information with which to proceed. Don't worry about the singular and plural. Everyone gets things twisted sometimes. Diverticulum (s) Diverticula(p)

I had a fever for 2 days with pains in the lower left abdomen. Went to the clinic and they gave me antibiotics and it cleared up after a week. Is there any aftercare I need to get done?

A frightening, but very informative video. At age 74, this morning 14/Nov/20 I had a colonoscopy at an NHS hospital (GB). Once again, the endoscopist found severe inflammation mainly in the sigmoid area associated with diverticulitis. I say "once again" because I had a colonoscopy 10 years ago and diverticulitis was diagnosed back then, too. I was advised to eat a fibre rich diet, and the same recommendation was advised this morning. I believe I haven't done myself any favours by straining too much to pass constipated stool, so I desperately want to obliterate constipation as soon as possible, at least in order to stop any more of those little pouch critters from forming. I want to avoid an ostomy at all costs! My brother, 10 years younger, had his whole large intestine removed due to unresolvable IBD at age 30 approx and has had a colostomy bag ever since, which I know he absolutely hates. The thing is, 10 years ago there was nothing like as much information on the Internet. Nowadays, no matter what we're interested in, we can nearly always find one or more videos about it on KZread, which is what got me here. So, starting with breakfast tomorrow morning I'm going to start eating muesli and other fibre-rich foods. Not go OTT immediately, but increase my fibre intake bit by bit over the next days, weeks and, hopefully, years. 10 years ago I didn't realise how serious a problem diverticulitis can develop into as not enough emphasis was put on the potential complications you describe, like abscesses, fistula etc. After watching your video and some others, too, I really must much more of an effort to avoid the surgeon's scalpel.

Forgot to say that I didn't have any symptoms. No pain in the left quadrant. What brought me to this morning's colonoscopy was unresolved iron deficiency anaemia and my general practitioner suspected bleeding somewhere in the colon.

Getting my pain lower right side is it referred from small Bowel ,keep being checked for water infection, or appendix

OMG! I’ve been in pain for about a month and is only getting worse. I’m getting severe gas like cramps bloating I don’t have diarrhea but I go to the bathroom two to three times a day and even that doesn’t help much and now the pain is intolerable I have to take loads of Advil or pain cripples me. It started as a slight discomfort and got to the current level, It doesn't seem to be getting any worst but it's just there more of a medium-discomfort but I have no other symptoms outside of the pain and tenderness. Yes it was helpful. When you are pain and I'll, they really don't explain, they treat and release. Such was my case. I had been ill but had no idea what was happening to me. I learned more in this short video than I learned from my own doctor. I finally saw a gastro dr and she helped quite a bit. I control mine thru diet. But I will say I have no seeds whatsoever. Peanuts are a no also and my beloved strawberries are out also. It took me two years to get it under control. I have been incident free now for eight years. We need to educate ourselves. The key is recognizing the symptoms and seeking help immediately.

I just was diagnosed with it last night and I was planning on just drinking bone broth for awhile but then they gave me major antibiotics that I have to take with food! How do I go about liquid diet on the meds?

I had lower left abdominal pain last week, went to primary doctor. Was put on two antibiotics. Cipro and another one @500 mg each. 5 pills a day. Had a low grade fever last night with some abdominal pain, went to the ER this morning where they did labs and a CT scan w/contrast. Came back negative for diverticulitis. Blood tests were normal. I previously had a bout with this disease 2 years ago, but the primary dr sent me for the CT scan right away at a facility which showed diverticulitis in the sigmoid colon, I took antibiotics by mouth for ten days and got better. Followed up with my GI doctor, he did a colonoscopy a few months later which was positive for diverticulosis and negative for polyps/cancer. Now I am wondering if I really had a second bout of diverticulitis or a stomach virus...since the CT scan 7 days after start of symptoms was negative but I had a low grade fever which prompted me to go to the ER...? I had no diarrhea but did have bloating and some pain in the left abdomen as well as some constipation. Should I continue taking the antibiotics till they are finished? I am thinking I should call my gastroenterologist.

What if after 3 days intensive care on iv and antibiotics TAZOBACTAM 4.5 every 8 hours..... pain is gone but fever is persistent. What to do then?

I have this. I had a CT scan and the report shows that I have verticulitis. I was just old by the ER doctor to drink more water and to eat more fiber. My concern is that I keep getting a trembling sensation in that area, I'm worry that it could burst. Do you have any suggestions about my symptom.

Wow! Thank you. I've had 3 perforations in my sigmoid and they've healed with antibiotics after 2 months. Pain was unbearable. I get pain radiating across my abdomen now and then for hours and then it stops. I've been in the ER numerous times and for some reason the pain stops before tests. Can you tell me what that pain can be from? It's 10 pain. Gas pocket? No Dr. in the ER even guessed. Can you? It's unbearable. Also my ct scans are fine. Thank you!

Ive recently been diagnosed with this after feeling pain/discomfort on my right side. First time i went to the er the doc did no tests and said i probably had a hernia starting and sent me home. 2 months later the pain was still there and it gave me a severe anxiety attack which i had never experienced before so i thought i was having a heartattack, i blacked out and was a total mess. Finally had a ct scan done and a week after a doctor called me and said i had diverticulosis, no explanation of what it was or what treatment options were, it kinda scared the hell out of me. So got on google to find out what my condition was and am currently trying to get as much information about it as possible. Theres alot of conflicting information out there its all pretty confusing to me. I do feel lucky tho because about a week before i got the call from the doctor the pain had seemed to go away. I had stopped eating fried foods and started eating more broccoli and fish n potatoes, and made it a routine to have hot water with honey and lemon every morning with a bowl of oatmeal. Felt ok for a bit till one night i ate a subway sub and instantly felt the same pain come back after a couple hours i made a cup of hot water n honey with lemon and the pain stopped within 15 minutes. I felt i had a little breakthrough and realized the honey and lemon juice may have helped me originally and seemed to help alot this time. Im still nervous to eat certain foods. Im 36yo and live alone. Ive lost time at work from this and have had to find ways to deal with the anxiety of it all and well i guess im sharing all this in hopes someone can point me in the right direction for good information. Just a question about my severe acid reflux . I have severe stumach pain and a bad burning in the stumach and pain in my osophigus and across my lungs area and I keep going shortness in breath and pulpertations. It happens when I try and eat something and even drinking water then soon after it that's when I get these pulpertations and shortness of breath keep coming in waves and a difficulty with constipation and difficulty having wee's put I do have a bad viginal prolapes which is making me all bloated. I can't eat and having difficulties drinking water when I take my tablets . Not eaten now for three days because my stumach feels so inflammed and up my osophigus any advice on this. I am on ranitidine and lansoprazole and domperidone for sickness. Please could you tell me what you think it could be. ? Thanks 🙂

hi doc i am diagnosed with diverticulities in my right and after 1 week of medication theres still less pain in my right and when i eat hard.. is this normal or should i go again for a follow up check? or am i going to have a surgery? am very nervous and afraid to have surgery... pls give advice doc..

A patient has been under antibiotics (trogyl metronybazole injection ip 0.1 w/v 100ml 1 morning, 1 afternoon, 1 night, and Cipromax 0.2% w/v 100ml 1 morning, 1 afternoon, 1 night) for a week now but the pain on the side of the abdomen (a little swelling on the right side as well) has not gotten better. Is surgery the only remedy now?

Hi Rajendra. If you can I would do a CT scan to see if it's improved, but one week on antibiotics with persistent symptoms that are not improving sounds like they may need surgery soon.

Is it possible to have both appendicitis and diverticulitis at the same time?
