sometimes I feel bad for our boy Mr. Ballen. his ‘hardcore’ fanbase is pretty insufferable & I’ve been subbed to his channel since the very beginning. y’all have never once displayed any disrespect for him, his prior military service, or his KZread content - so the criticism in that regard is completely baseless. that being said, I’ve loved watching Dive Talk grow from under 3K subs to now. you’ve really taken your passion for underwater exploration and thrived in this unique sector of KZread. great video analysis as always guys!

From what I read about this, there were regular attempts to find his body over the next few weeks. They supposedly passed within 120 ft of him but during those searches rescuers couldn’t hear him. He wrote in the sand to his wife and mom that he loved them. So sad. I actually think this is more horrifying than the other videos on Dive Talk about divers dying in caves. Even worse than the video about the Dolphin oil explosion. They’re all bad but this guy really suffered. For three weeks he suffered until he starved to death. That must be an awful way to go. So much time to think and agonize over having to leave your family you love.

As gruesome as the dolphin oil explosion was, they must've died instantly, or damn close to it. It's gruesome for the people that found the bodies, but thankfully the victims didn't suffer a long death. I want to comment specifically on something Woody said regarding why we don't dive open circuit on a single tank in a cave. He mentioned gas endurance, and while it is true that proper gas management would lead to a very short dive on a single, I just want to point out to the community here that the more important reason for diving doubles in any environment where the surface is unavailable is to have at least two independent first stages so that you can accommodate a regulator failure, similar to why you carry bailout tanks to accommodate a rebreather failure.

He said it's basically near impossible for it to have happen as described. He went into traumatic chest injury, force needed limited by the drag water creates, angle and precision needed, average survival of times after such injury, and a bunch of other factors. His conclusion was it more likely he was stabbed and dumped in the cave in a odd attempt stage suicide.

The fact that a case wasn't tried over a theory still leaves room for the there to be at least up to 95% plausible. More than 0% chance, but less than 95%. @@electrictroy2010 Not sure what that has to do with my comment; perhaps it was posted as a reply by accident. But anyway ... Firstly, @MrBallen is a storyteller, NOT a journalist, and doesn't claim to be. However, his sources are as reliable as those used by journalists and he maintains an utmost respect for the truth of events and the general narrative. Secondly, even if detail based on safe assumptions - for example, an island inside a cave system is almost definitely going to be "rocky [and] sandy" - is added for descriptive and dramatic effect, it doesn't change the story in any meaningful way whatsoever. It's an almost universally deployed device in retelling ANY true story as entertainment ... and sometimes, even in journalistic editorial. To suggest he is "creating fiction" by doing that is just absurd. He's creating entertainment based on true events - would you be totally gripped (or even just entertained) by a story if it was only police reports and court transcripts read verbatim? I don't think so ...

I would have loved to hear about what the procedures are these days when a diver is lost. It doesn't seem like, in a cave that is very possibly full of air pockets, that rescuers would give up and police would block the cave after only a few hours of searching. And even if they were convinced he was dead, I'm sure that they would continue searching for the body. In the Thai cave rescue, the kids and their coach weren't found for over a week after they'd gone missing, and no one gave up. I've seen some of your videos with Edd Sorenson and it can take him a few days to get somewhere, and he still searches. I'm just shocked that they searched for this guy for such a short amount of time and then wouldn't let anyone else in.

To me, someone who has never dived, let alone been deep in a cave, the whole concept of a "line" automatically led me to believe that people would instinctively know to tie a new line to the main line so they could find their way back to it *if* they went off exploring. It's scary that some people wouldn't even think about something as simple as getting lost, which we've all gone and done at some point in our life. However, he churns out stories at an impressive rate, so it is inevitable that not all points will be 100% accurate. Moreover, he tells stories for entertaining purposes and much like a movie based on a true story, at times they need to be made more engaging. You guys are equally awesome and provide content for a different purpose, education! Therefore, all is as expected as far as I am concerned. I’m a fan of both channels and honestly can’t see the issue that some appear to have with this. I’d bet my last £££ that Mr Ballen himself wouldn’t have an issue with these review video’s and more than likely welcomes them. First, for a good source of fact checking. Second, for the added exposure, and lastly I imagine he’s still interested in diving at some level, how could he not be with this channel available 😉? Keep up the good work guys (all of you), maybe a special edition collaboration will help the critics see things more clearly, I’d be keen to watch a joint effort! “Cave diving’s true stories and the lessons they provide” you can have that one guys haha. 👍

They entered an area with a swiss cheese wall, as she was tired she told her friends she would wait if they wanted to explore. The guy went into one tunnel on the left and the girl on a tunnel to the right. Both explorers got lost and asked her to call to them to follow her voice back. She said they both returned but from opposite walls to what they started at, and neither crossed the other. She was really freaked out, but added the cave system is really complex. The entire group was told (at the very beginning) not to leave or stray from the group as it is easy to separate and get lost. It is pretty serious. Edit grammar

It sounds like they were either inexperienced or not properly trained. Thanks for all the insights. I am not a diver and probably never will be so it's very interesting to hear from people who know the subject.

You 2 guys have the best channel ever in the history of the universe. For real, thank you guys for all the videos and safety information and your reactions. Got scuba certified in Fiji on my honey moon. My wife had a 104 degree fever and we were on Vatulele island. I got the nurse and she helped her. I said babe I won’t leave your side for the next 10 days. She said go learn how to dive if I die at least you learn a skill and have something good out of our honeymoon lol. I had 11 dives and it was amazing. Oh yeah my wife survived too!!

Love the hat Woody! MR. Ballen is Da Man. All his content is Great. I also, am not a cave diver, however a dry caver. Cavers rely on people like you. Professional cave divers to explore where we can't. The expert cave divers can help exploration, continue to expand and map and give us all a better idea on what to do next. I have met a few cave divers; they are great folk. Would love to see you comment on Snail Shell cave in TN. One of the longest underwater caves in TN. The problem is that I think there is no data (VIDEIO) on this Cave. if you guys get bored and have the time, please check into this. If anything, you will be impressed. Managed by the SSCI. Thanks.

90% OF BALLEN STORIES ARE FALSE. He just invents the details (fiction). He should do more research to make sure the stories are accurate .

Are there any devices similar to sonar, or sound generating “beacons” that could be used like a distress signal if you are lost? Not even sure if that works underwater well, but it seems like it might be possible?

I love your explanations. Mainly because right after Mr. Allen explained that the guy had strayed off the path the SECOND time, I was going to ask, “Wouldn’t that be a ‘f you’ point; where you just turn around and leave together?” “Sorry man, we can’t trust you down there, and as we’re depending on each other for survivor, we can’t afford the risk of taking you down.” But your explanation of “Okay, now you’re swimming between us like an impudent child” would likely be more acceptable for everyone else in the party. And as someone who was raised in FL, I fully understand Woody’s alligator hat. I live in South Korea now, far away from any ‘gators, yet my classrooms always have one represented.

I found you two through AWP and I found MrBallen through you guys, never heard of him until you two mentioned him despite me being a pretty big KZread consumer. I found him to be acquired taste borderline catering to children BUT as I watched some more he started to grow on me and now I've binged probably 50 of his videos within 2 weeks (Not exaggerating either) Edit: Checked out of curiosity and I've watched so much Dive Talk lately that this channel is now in my top 10 sidebar out of 300+ channels 🤣 You guys are going to hit 1 million subs.

  • @MrDoss89

I don't think that cave diving can be called safe. I think you guys just make it safer through risk mitigation. By implementing the rules and procedures created through the risk analysis and science developed by the dive community. Based on decades of experience and data collected. Also, people need to understand your criticizing technicalities within his story not his storytelling itself.

@@tolga1cool that's exactly right. Everything we do comes with risk. We weight the the risk reward benefits. Implement measures to reduce risk if we deem the reward great enough.
