Honestly i was very happy that i learned dive tables in my PADI course because planning gets so much simpler knowing tables (at least for me…)

It’s a decent way to start but I definitely do it on a computer now.

I might get some flak here, I'm 26, been sports diving since I was 8, on the West Coast of Scotland. Admittedly, it was my father that taught me to dive, I basically memorised the old BSAC 88 tables as we used to still dive the single profile dive (decend, bottom time, ascend). When I turned 17/18 I bought a Suunto Zoop, and it's been absolutely incredible. However, I still dive with a (not a shamed) cheap Divex watch, purely because the '88 tables are still in my brain. I've had cheeky remarks (from other divers) but I don't see any harm in it. Being a commercial diver too, the USN tables share some similarity to the '88 tables. When me and my Mrs go diving, we do a kit check then do we a dive plan check, there's no harm in both of us being in the same wavelength in terms of what we are doing. Luckily she's into underwater photography so she hovers on the bottom and keeps the plan simple. She has a Suunto Zoop too but I feel, in reality, she doesn't need to know the tables for the dives we do. Adam - 26, still has a 17cm dive knife on my leg, still wears a watch, still thinks its the 80s and thinks the Aqualung Conshelf XIV is the best reg. 😅

Eh no flak from me haha. Tables are good to know, but you’ll get more bottom time with a dive computer imo since it can recalculate NDL based on actual times at depths and not just what your initial plan was. Glad you both dive with computers regardless! I think they’re safer. Not knocking tables at all though!

👍🤿😎 Yes I occasionally do review my dive tables as I would go on a dive knowing my depth from a guide on a trip asking say a day before hand and reviewing my dive tables. Kind of quizzing myself comparing to my dive computer in a sense constantly challenging myself! Oh yes I have made simple mistakes but my dive computer alerted me and I reviewed my notes and plan and found my simple mistakes! Being a little overconfident and not slowing down and rechecking myself yup I goofed up! Kind of a self discipline!

Having a solid dive buddy is a major part of planning. I have 2 , my wife or my uncle, since we dive together a lot - we know what to expect from each other, our planing mainly consists of "what way we are heading". Gas planning is always the same. My uncle is a bit of a gas guzzler - so if i see him shallow up a bit , i know he is at 1200psi. ----- Those "Insta buddies" scenarios on charter boats are disaster most of the time. They chill at 100ft and after take your octo on safety stop

Insta buddies are tough for sure and having a solid buddy you know is SO much better I agree. Hard on solo travelers sometimes. But also just if you wanna dive locally, you do need some idea of a plan! Haha. That’s why I made this one.

I still use my tables on dives - and went through the process of self-learning Nitrox tables just so I have the knowledge and don’t have to ‘trust’ the computer alone. I remember my OW instructor quickly looking at the tables and telling us to enter the pressure group, the SI, and the new PG and limit. He actually told us what to enter, but did not clearly explain how he got that info. Great explanation of how to use the computer to plan a dive - it’s really a shame the agencies don’t cover this better in the intro class. Thanks for another great video - I’ll definitely be sharing it with my buddy and rewatching it prior to our next dive - hopefully the lakes are warm enough next month!!

Thanks Daniel! Tables are fine, but why not use your computer now? Tables are very conservative, and I’d definitely use a computer just for better bottom time since it knows my actual depths rather than planned depths and trying multi level planning with tables that just estimates what I hope my depths would be. I know some folks still don’t trust the dive computer like they do tables, and I think tables are important to understand regardless. But curious why on your choice! Thanks for the comment as always, and sharing as well!

@@CircleHScuba honestly, because I never explored using the computer in such a way. Probably in part from a lack of experience and instruction- thankfully I just watched a video that showed how to do this!

@SummersideDiver I’m planning one on how to read a dive computer too, though I’m not sure when it’ll come out just yet. I think explaining what the numbers mean at least at a high level is important. It can change from computer to computer up to a point but still.

Where do you fill tanks South of Raleigh on the way to Fantasy lake? Just wondering logistics.

Yeah you can use tables, but you likely have a dive computer and should probably use that since it’ll track your actual depth changes and time at those depths versus what you think you may be at.

Here in SoCal, the recreational dive planning off the dive boats tends to be a bit looser. Dives that tend to be shallow enough (and back on board times soon enough) that NDL is mostly a non-issue, and the boat captain gives a dive site briefing when you get there. The precise site is usually not known in advance and depends on conditions.

I think gas pressure or time being your turn indicator makes sense, but knowing rough depths is important in most locations. I know it varies some but you still need to know basics like entry and exit techniques, etc. which is still part of planning.
