Rising to stardom in the 1970's thanks to his unique stand-up act, he became first an icon of the small screen, and then an icon of the big screen, jumping from the television hit "Mork and Mindy" to star in films like "Good Will Hunting," "Dead Poets Society," and "Aladdin."

Robin will never know the smiles he gave to a sad little girl in an alcoholic home full of darkness. He taught me to laugh. I couldn't even talk about him after he died for 6 years didn't cry just pretend it didn't happen. I raised my kids in a home full of laughter and silliness because of him. I wish I could tell him what he meant to me but I don't blame him, not mad or anything. Just so grateful for the time we had with him.

My father had dementia. Although it was heartbreaking that Robin took his own life, there are fates worse than death, and we get to remember him as the great man he was, he kept his autonomy and had control over how he left us. I would not wish this disease on my worst enemy.

My father in law had Alzheimer's and it was a total nightmare for everyone for ten years until he died. It just killed my mother in law. Right when retired he got it, and the life they worked for for fifty years was gone like that! He didn't know anyone. She just couldn't believe life could be that cruel. Bad enough he was dying, but didn't recognize her either?! Awful. I told my husband to leave me if I get Alzheimer's, because I won't know and won't remember anyway. I refuse to let anyone I love suffer that! I'm absolutely serious, I'd do anything to prevent putting someone through that...

I was so amazed by Robin Williams...I saw him at a college in the Bay Area (CA), as a teen when my dad took me to see Shields and Yarnell, who were popular in the San Francisco street scene. I think William's was a friend of theirs, and he just kind of showed up to hang out. This had to be early 70s...he went from doing a bit of everything to really going nuts on tv and breaking out.

And I'm not at all saying he *had to* do all of that. I just think taking that route would've been the best, most selfless thing RW could've done with what seemingly little time he had left of his life to live, instead of just throwing away his platform & overwhelmingly positive legacy via suicide. Him taking such a selfless approach to his diagnoses would've been an amazing, inspiring way to turn a nightmarish & horrifically negative development into a net positive for humanity, and probably even for RW himself!

@@RednailVal Lol, what even is this post supposed to mean? Robin Williams was a very gifted performer and entertainer. Those of us humored & entertained by the man certainly feel as if he's a gift from whatever God(s) you do or don't believe in, and rightfully so. His unforgettably unique stand-up acts with their frenetic pace, & unmistakably Williamsian delivery + goofy, humorous tone of voice that dripped with sarcastic wit and comedic value. I can't think of any Robin Williams standup or a comedy routine of his in general that could + would be described as "low-brow humor." But his comedy also managed not to have a shred of pretentiousness, nor did RW take himself or his comedy too seriously so his standup never came off as self-righteous, self-indulgent preaching instead of performing standup comedy. His comedy was extremely unique & uncommon in his ability to be a comedy chameleon whose acts had a little something in each bit that made him accessible to comedy fans of all shapes and sizes can find something - or things - that stuck out to them and they found to be memorably funny.

If you look at the interviews with his people from his inner circle it's quite apparent the dementia had already crippled his mind and gutted much of his soul by the time he had taken his own life. The neurologist that worked on his autopsy stated that the brain damage he had suffered was the worst he had ever seen from Lewy Body dementia and he didn't even understand how Robin Williams had managed to remain even demi-functional in such a wretched state. The doctor said that a person with that much brain damage should have been either dead or a complete catatonic vegetable at that point. He was a very brave man with an iron will. Most people don't have it in them to do what he did for his family and himself.

At that point in his story, he broke into tears, heaving deep crying tears into his arms. The doctor told him of a man performing in town that week who could make everyone laugh. He told him he should go to his show and that would cheer him up. The crying man looked up and said through sobbing and tears " Oh, doctor, I am that performer". Comedians, and people who are just funny in general, can feel the opposite inside. I always had a knack for getting some laughs. You're either a good spirited happy individual, or you are crying inside. Humor helps suppress the real feelings. It can be from an actual sickness, or due to circumstances that make it hard, if not impossible to feel happy on the inside. Maybe it's because of bills, or a recent breakup. Which makes sense. Given the same choice he had I can see myself doing the same. It's very hard choice. I don't want to think about it even. But given the choices he had it just make sense. To me at least.

I grew up with most of Robin’s movies and shows. One of my #1 favorites will always be Ms. Doubtfire. I didn’t have internet access at the time he passed so I only found out a couple years later. I was too young to understand his pain and suffering, but as an adult who’s struggled with severe depression and self harm for 6 years straight, it’s not something I’d wish upon even my worst enemy. He was my favorite person when I was a kid. It was my absolute biggest dream to meet him in person. I’m heartbroken that it’ll never happen but I’m happy to know that he’s no longer suffering and he’s in a better place. 7 years later and I’m still in denial that he’s gone… I’ll never forget you Robin. Maybe one day I’ll meet you wherever you are. You made my world a better place. Your memory gives me hope for my future. I love you and I miss you so much!!! Rest in peace 😭🕊❤️

Robin Williams would have wanted people to understand what he went through if it would help people and hopefully keep them safe. He himself spoke of his drug and alcohol problems in his routines , for those who say don't talk about it they are the problem. A poison must be drawn out before healing can begin .

Now that I’m older, can you blame him or anyone? Who wants to continue to live in such a cruel world, even worse if you’re suffering from a disease, you can’t control. Out of all the actors that have passed since, Robin Williams death hit me the hardest. I grew up watching Robin Williams in just about everything. First time I ever heard his voice was in Aladdin and from then on, I fell in love with his humor. It hurt when I heard the news that day. for the next couple of years following his death, I found it very hard to watch any Robin Williams movie. But now, I watch his movies and remember the good times I shared with my family. He will always have a special place in all of our hearts. He's no longer in pain. Rest peacefully, dear Robin.
