Because thats what he is
This is the last song I showed my mother before she passed away last Christmas. I remember it with complete and utter clarity. As she lay in her hospital bed, I placed my headphones gently on her ears and pressed play. I remember all the features of her beautiful face, each line and crease had a story to tell about her life. And what a life it was, filled elation, joy and unequivocal love, along with sorrow and more pain than I care to imagine. Her strength and love is something that I can only aspire to. As the song reached it crescendo I watched as the hairs on her arms began to slowly raise created by tiny goosebumps. Then as the song slowly drew to an end, I witnessed the most radiant smile along with one....just one little teardrop falling from her cheek. We didn't need words... When her eyes stared into mine it was the warmest, most pure love only a mother and her child could possibly convey. We were absolutely blissful in the sound of silence.

Fun Fact: The symbol for the band Disturbed, used originally as art for the band's Believe album, is actually made up of four religious symbols: The Jewish Star of David, The Wiccan Pentacle (often confused to be a satanic symbol), The Crescent Moon of Islam and the Christian Cross. The idea was for it to be a symbol that represented Unity especially since most of the band was raised Catholic save for lead singer, David Draiman, who was raised Jewish and claimed that while they don't believe in religion itself they do believe in God.

Usually a cover can never outplay the original, but Draiman's voice and the slower tempo actually make the message of this song much more meaningful. S&G is a great version, no doubt. This one just hits more to your heart and soul.

I tended to agree with John Undefined’s comment with regard to Disturbed’s cover; I was listening to their “Official Music Video”. I definitely preferred Simon & Garfunkel’s version! Actually, as I first began to listen, “creepy” was the word that initially came to mind (and just Too slow). But then I watched/listened to Disturbed sing it on Conan, and I have to say that I Did appreciate That rendition much more! I really liked it, and the reverence with which he sang this beloved classic clearly rang throughout; I was moved, much more so than my initial listen to the official video cover. That said, in no way did I personally feel that it was somehow “better”, superior to the original. The lyrics themselves, were so spot on in ‘64 when Paul Simon wrote this song, and if possible, even more so now~ they’re hauntingly bleak, despairing, & yet, somehow soulful, hopeful… Paul & Art’s voices, tempo with which they gave life to those lyrics, imo, only served to make them even more hauntingly, beautifully poignant. Having since read a little background on why Disturbed wanted to do the cover, some other facts.. I think I most appreciate Disturbed’s version, not as “a better cover”, but as a loving tribute to Simon & Garfunkel and the song lyrics Paul had written. in that regard, I believe they excelled. 😊

Not of 2020 but mid of 2023 and leading into the Beast system (New World Order) which is sometime in 2024... Everything is biblical including this song which sings of the first Antichrist (neon god that we created, AI system) which everyone will bow to and lose their souls... Laugh all you want but its true... and only the few will open up to the truth and realize what's truly going on while the majority willfully cover their eyes and ears to truth... They can't handle the fact that they've been living their lives wrong this whole time, they cannot accept that God is real and that we've been lied to this whole time by everyone in control... Everyone will have a choice to make very soon, but sadly a lot of you will choose wrong...

To me it fits the somewhat chilling lyrics much better than the original's very folky style. It was... mismatched, like a bunch of happy children singing a sing about death. Kind of like Ring Around the Rosey.
A lot of people think the original is better and I can understand why, but this version, in my opinion, portrays the raw emotion I think the song was meant to portray. Disturbed did it perfectly. And that is why I prefer this version.

To all “musicians” In the modern music industry, this is how you cover a song. You treat it with respect and keep the feel of the song, while adding your voice to it
So....just an hour ago....at work...mopping floors...an after hours gig to earn a few extra bucks. I put some music on to brighten a sluggish job. I let youtube play on its own. Just as I'm finishing up John Denver comes on singing Country Boy. Then.....this comes on. Immediately caught my attention. "Who's this" I think to myself. Over to the computer I go. Disturbed? Within 10 seconds I've got tears streaming down my face. This is THE most incredible cover ever done by anyone. Also, never listening to anything that someone wants You to listen to, not exactly a good way to make friends. continue being the Pontious "If it's not country it's not worth listening to" kinda person; you'll fit right in with everyone in Hell.
This was my dad's favourite song he passed away last summer I remember sitting on the edge of his hospital bed I played this song one last time for him but then his heart stopped and then we sat there in the silence I really miss him but this song reminds me of him and reminds me of the memories we made together
Always liked this song, but this cover is another level. Came up on the radio and about blew me out of my seat. Holy SHIT he puts so much into it. Just... damn.

Simon and Garfunkel's version is God's warning about the future that was coming for us if we kept behaving the way we do. Disturbed's is God's anger and disappointment that came from us not listening to the warning.

This is a hauntingly beautiful version of a classic by Simon & Garfunkel from around 50 years ago.. an amazing cover.. These words resonate with everything going on in the world today, not just Covid 19.. Simon & Garfunkel are true genius personified.. Prophets themselves.. How can anyone have such a beautiful, powerful voice? It’s magically ethereal, but so earthly raw, it’s amazing.

Even as that silence is aiding the black clouds of death come overwhelming me. Suffocating me. Until one day I give up. I give in to death. I lost. Nothing could prepare me for this. Now I am no longer existent. They told me there was a god who would take care of me. Yet I see nothing. Everything that has been told to me were lies. Lies told by the servants of death. The second we're born we are vunerable to disease famine. Death. Why are we still here? No one knows. We all see the world from one place. Our own place. We never. see what the other person sees. We never hear what they say. We are all in our own world. What he hear is completely different from what others hear. We don't know our true friends like we do. We know nothing. We are all fools listening to the black cloud. Why?

One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard and felt.
I lost my best friend to blood cancer when I was 8 years old. At his funeral they played his favorite song - the sound of silence. Even as an adult, I broke down emotionally crying when I heard the song. The cover version of Disturbed helped me to cope with this trauma. I can now listen to the original again without breaking down, but it still makes me cry every time...
People talking without speaking....people listening without hearing That's so true of todays society. People don't have real conversations anymore rather they rely on their texting and tweets. We need to sit with others more and actually talk and learn what is going on around us.

There is a wonderful irony in the two best covers. Hurt was covered by Johnny Cash, a folk/country musician, and was originally written by Trent Reznor, a heavy metal musician. Song of Silence was covered by Disturbed/David Draiman, heavy metal, and was originally written by Simon and Garfunkel, a folk/rock duo.
When talent hits your ears...you can't let it go. His voice is amazing!
